#34hourlanguagechallenge

LIVE

The well known language learning site, Duolingo, claims that 34 hours on Duolingo is equal to one semester of a language course at a university. I had to test this theory! So, I came up with the idea for a 34 hour language challenge, which I will document on the blog 34hourchallenge.blogspot.com.

If you would like to do a 34 language challenge as well, here are the rules.

1. Pick a language you are not familiar with, but are interested in learning.

2. Spend at least one hour a day studying the language on Duolingo until you’ve reached 34 hours.

3. Take a placement test in the language.

4. Let me know how your challenge went. I’ll add you to the “34 Hour Challenge” honor roll.

My mom is a huge fan of Memrise. So she decided that we should take this challenge to the next level. She is going to spend 34 hours learning a language on Memrise. We are both going to take a placement test at the end of the 34 hours. So, if you want to choose Memrise over Duolingo, that works too.

For the Memrise challenge, the rules are the same as for the Duolingo challenge.

You can comment here if you want to be added to the “34 hour challenge” challenger’s list for Duolingo or Memrise. Just let me know which one!  I can add your blog name, your Duolingo/Memrise username. Or both!

After you’ve completed the challenge, you can be added to the Honor Roll.

If you decide to blog about the challenge, please link me back to your blog so I can check it out as well!

On Tumblr simply reblog this post or reply with a note saying you accept the challenge. Don’t forget to let us know how it went!

#34hlc is the official tag

34 Hour Language Challenge

Hello! I’m beginning the 34 hour language challenge with my goal to know 1 semester worth of information about the French language!! I’m so excited and I will be documenting every week on how the studies are going! @34hourlanguagechallenge

Bonne Chance!

What do y'all think of using #34hlc for the tag to make it easier to find posts about the 34 hour language challenge?

If anyone has finished the challenge, please tag me so I can give you props.

Is anyone currently doing the 34 hour language challenge? Has anyone finished it?

languagethoughts:

I did 70 xp today! I learned all of Adjectives (six lessons) and a round of review to polish off my tree. I’m still recovering from being sick, so I’m off to bed. Let’s hope for a perfect day tomorrow!

languagethoughts:

So I’ve only gotten 30xp per day these past three days. And all my xp was for doing some practice, with no new skills. Even so, my tree is starting to decay. Tomorrow I will have to do some real work to get my tree gold again, and push forward with the learning of new words and phrases.

languagethoughts:

Today has been my best day so far! I didn’t do any review, but I learned 20 lessons (200xp). This puts me at about half the tree. Soon I can start to use the language in real life! Here’s my tree:

languagethoughts:

Day Two complete! Today I learned 10 lessons, and did 5 rounds of review, for a total of 150xp. Below is my tree as of today:

Esperanto’s vocabulary is not hard to guess, with all the cognates. That said, some phrases are a little bit of a mystery (like you’re welcome - “nedankinde”). Also, the Spanish part of my brain really wants to match the ending vowel of nouns and adjectives, which is throwing me off a little. We’ll get there :)

Hi all!

If you have decided to participate in the 34 Hour Language Challenge, then I hope it is going well for you. If you are not participating, but are still studying languages, then I still hope your studying is going well.

I’ve created a chat room for the challenge, so that we can discuss the challenge and share our accomplishments, our success, and maybe even our setbacks (for moral support).

I also think we need a custom short tag for 34hour related things. So what do you all think a good tag would be?
