Today we are celebrating the life and achievements of Alan Turing (1912-1954)- the British mathematician and father of computer science, who just happened to be gay!!
He was prosecuted because of his homosexuality in 1952 and in lieu of jail was chemically castrated. Two years later he sadly took his life.
His talent, and his brilliant mind helped to advance the scientific knowledge of the time and still impacts on current thinking. He is known as the father of computing- and his work could have continued if he had not been treated so brutally by the government.
In honour of his life and his work we are giving away free apples to people in the Refectory today with little banners about him!!
