#all new all different marvel
This week saw the launch of Marvels All New All Different run of comics.
Doctor Strange hasn’t had solo run since about the mid to late 90s, but with the announcement of his movie it was a pretty solid bet he would get a solo comic series.
Yesterday was the debut of the new Dr. Strange solo outing written by Jason Aaron with Chris Bachalo as the artist.
I’m a HUGE fan of what Jason Aaron does with characters. His current run with Thor is probably my favorite since…well…a long freaking time!
*Spoilers* Making Thor Jane Foster was brilliantly done, considering many thought she was it but Aaron threw many a curveball to debunk that theory only to prove people right in the end!
Anyways back to the good Doctor.
Aaron does a brief intro to remind people of who Dr. Strange is and then jumps right into the plot. Strange is a very normal male, personality wise. This grounds him very well making him more relatable. Unlike when he’s off in the netherworld fighting mystic beings we can’t see showing why he’s the Sorcerer Supreme.
As with Thor, this series has a slow burn with great teases of the very very harsh villains. This is where I feel Aaron’s writing really shines. He has this knack for making great villains that really make the heroes heroic; looking at you Gor the God Butcher.
In the Bar with No Doors scene we get to meet Stanges compatriots and the crux of what this series is about. As was mentioned in multiple interviews Aaron hints at the fact that magical use has price, a price Strange hasn’t been paying and is going to have some serious consequences for not. This is Aaron’s stamp on Strange and the mystical power he wields. Magic is awesome but nothing is free.
Bachalo does some amazing art in this book and gives us a lot to look at when Dr. Strange uses his third eye to see beyond what we see. The monsters and beings look fantastic and very…Strange. His talent for giving life to what Aaron writes makes them an excellent pair that I’m looking forward to reading.
This is an excellent jumping on point for new readers and is looking to be an amazing addition to Dr. Strange’s legacy. Again this looks to be a slow burning series, but with, what I believe is, a powder keg at the end.
