Because despite the pain, the fear, the isolation - it is so much easier than whatever life they were taken from. Easier to not make choices for themself, easier for someone else to have control.
They don’t have to worry about where their next meal will come from, because it’s not up to them whether they eat or not. They don’t have to worry about what to do with their life, because they don’t get a say in what they do or when they do it. They don’t have to worry about whether people like them, because they never have to interact with anyone except their captor.
Any problems they had in their life no longer matter. They don’t need to try to solve them anymore.
All they need to do is whatever their captor tells them. And it is so much simpler than being free.
