For throw back Thursday here is an image of a mute swan pair I photographed back in early March of this year. I’m a bit of a file hoarder when it comes to my images. I will usually save things that are sharp and have room for me to play with their composition thinking to myself “I will find a use for this at some point”. A Big Splash
I practiced a little social distancing this past Sunday when I drove to Barnegat Light State Park and walked out along the beach and the rock jetty. A merganser drake came in for a landing and made quite a splash with his debut. Sometimes the action is better than the animal itself. A northeast wind kept migrating northern gannets drifting closer to the shoreline and into view from the jetty. It was great to get a last look at some of the wintering birds before they complete the last leg of their northern journey to breed for the season. #Merganserwww.danieldauria.com (at Barnegat Light, New Jersey)

“rolling ball” pen drawings of ducks by the Seekonk River I did back in July. The top ones are of a momma duck resting with ducklings nestled under her feathers, before they all woke up and started exploring. The others are of an adult duck with a strangely twisted foot who was hanging out nearby, grooming and looking for snacks.

Mallard with a very late brood, Zealandia
Photo by Jonathan HughesThe ducks like the lakes behind the dams and the wetlands at Zealandia, and the free food. They’ve learnt that if they hang around below the elevated feeding stations, the endangered native birds that frequent them are sure to drop or spill some food. This momma has set up camp a few yards away from the kakas’ feeding station, on the edge of some bushy cover. She escorts the string of ducklings across the clearing to mop up after the parrots, squawking at any humans that threaten to get in the way.
