This is not from Ani Difranco’s performance at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass this year, but I’ll be honest- this is the version that I fell in love with so it’s always going to be closest to my heart, and since I can’t post videos from the actual cover version she and what they called “The Hardly Strictly Lesbian Band” did, I’ll put this here.
None of the songs really stood out to me as ones I’d seek so I could listen again, but I wanted to remember the performance because the venue- the warmly-lit nighttime Music Box Village in New Orleans- was so unique and pretty. It seems like it would be a fun place to visit if I ever took a trip.
It’s frustrating to me that it took quite a bit to find out the name of the individual singing lead on “Rise” (why wouldn’t HSB give more details than just “The Hardly Strictly Lesbian Band”, especially when it appears that the song is theirs- not Ani’s?). Anyways, their name is Zoe Boekbinder and their voice is stunningly deep in that HSB performance I linked to above (48:37).
Today’s music: every time that I have time to think I think of this.
