Some nice 3D and digital backgrounds in the Psycho Pass movie. BG-team wasn’t exceptionally good or notable and the whole movie had troubles with all visuals.

Shiotani Naoyoshi is a great director, but he certainly has troubles trying to keep up schedules and animation quality in his longer works. Especially Psycho Pass franchise has always had production troubles. Season 1 had episodes 18-19 which were aired even though they were only partly completed (for which he apoligized in his twitter) and the whole season 2 which looked awful.

Michiko to Hatchin (2008/2009) is an anime by studio Manglobe. Backgrounds are co-production from Totonyan, Studio Easter and Green. There were also some outsorcing to background studio Green’s sister studios in China and Korea.

Responsible for the backgrounds was the art director Tamura Seiki most known for his works with Kyoto Animation (Munto and all K-On! and Haruhi stuffs) as well as from recently aired Rolling Girls which had unique handpainted art style.

Story is set in fictional South-American country and they capture extraordinaly well the overall feeling of the world. Locations and designs are well thought out and background art is consistently good throughout the series.

Notice how the church in the first picture is in the middle of nowhere. The importance of the location becomes more clear since this way it stands out more more so than in middle of the town. These kind of things are ofcourse not only the success of the BG, but also thanks to storyboarder&director.

Kekkai Sensen has high quality background art all over it, but the series is suffering otherwise from serious production problems. Not to mention the catastrophe with not being able to air the last episode for god knows how long.

Talented Art Director Shinji Kimura (mainly known for movies) did what he could with the backgrounds but series composition and animation collapse are taking their tolls. Anyways great architectural designs and well structured world.

For a 12-episode long series this had quite a few background studios assisting Kimura’s own BG-team. Total of 8 studios. This either was an unfunny experiment or productional disaster. Anyways great BG Art from master Kimura.

Sangatsu no Lion episode 4 had some great juxtapositioning. Series makes the viewer see the world like main characters:the very same city you live in can seem so different depending on how you feel that day.

I love the color coordination in the series. Everything can change drastically even within one episode. Concrete-grey and cold city in digital-backgrounds in one scene - and in another scene we have almost fairy-tale like beautiful blue impressionistic night-sky. Sasuga Shaft, sasuga Shinbou.

Backgrounds: Anime Workshop Basara
