Credit: Cover of 蛮勇 / Ban'yu, a Japanese translation of the novel Taras Bulba by Nikolai Gogol (Ukrainian-born, 1809-1852). Jushien Tsukahara; Ryusei Shibata. Tokyo: 新声社, Shinseisha, 1903. Originally publshed in Tōkyō nichinichi shinbun, 1895. I am not sure how the featured lion relates to the theme of the novel (related to the aspirations of the Zaporozhian Cossacks). As seen at the 2022 New York Antiquarian Book Fair @abaararebooks.
Credit: Cover art of Larry Fagin (New York, USA, 1937-2017) in collaboration with George Schneeman (Minnesota/New York, USA, 1934-2009). Rhymes of a Jerk. First edition artist’s book, undated, on sale from Derringer Books (Avon, Connecticut, USA) and seen at the New York Antiquarian Book Fair @abaararebooks. Notice the canine representation.
Well, as week’s guest says, you’ve heard of #SciComm (Science Communication), now get ready for #BibComm (Bibliographic Communication)!
Allie Alvis is the mastermind behind @book-historia. They currently work as a rare book cataloger at rare books dealer Type Punch Matrix, having worked at the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives Special Collections and the Royal Scottish Academy of Art & Architecture. She has multiple degrees in the history of the book and digital preservation from the University of Edinburgh and the University of Glasgow. You can say they know a thing or two about rare books.
OMG, I LOVED chatting with Allie about books! We talk digital preservation, book detectives, licking books, charlatan linguists, old book vs old manuscript smell, poisonous books, kissing manuscripts, why rare books matter, and so, so much more.
