Though I’m relieved to learn that this wonderful woman is no longer in pain, sorrowful to know the world is no longer graced by her presence. But her legacy lives on through films and recordings, as well as the actions of those whom she inspires.
As Wikipedia noted, she received accolades that were well deserved:
Inducted to the GMAGospel Music Hall of Fame in 2012, Franklin was described as “the voice of the civil rights movement, the voice of black America” and a “symbol of black equality”. Asteroid 249516 Aretha was named in her honor in 2014.
“American history wells up when Aretha sings”, President Obama explained in response to her performance of “A Natural Woman” at the 2015 Kennedy Center Honors. “Nobody embodies more fully the connection between the African-American spiritual, the blues, R&B, rock and roll—the way that hardship and sorrow were transformed into something full of beauty and vitality and hope”.
