#art ref
Anyway, fuck Adobe, and enjoy!
Give credit to the 30-year-old who did this shit for free and offers this remarkable thing for free!
Karen Vega, the first Oaxacan model to grace the pages of Vogue Magazine.
[ID: The royal portraits of 5 different Fire Lords from Avatar: The Last Airbender The Art of the Animated Series. Text underneath read: “These paintings, which depict the succession of the last five Fire Lords, hung in the palace hall. Since the first two weren’t prominently featured, we never figured out names for them. The last three are Sozin, Azulon, and Ozai. Illustrations by Jae Woo Kim. Color by Hye Jung Kim and Jae Woo Kim. Middle of the page: The Fire Lord’s palace. Design by Elsa Garagarza.”]
I wanted to know what the different parts and layers of the Fire Lord’s Robes are, so here’s my best guess as to what makes it up. Note, I’m just a person with google who only knows English. I know very little about Asian cultures (or any culture really), so I definitely got some parts wrong. If you’re interested I highly suggest you check out some of the references I have at the end.
[ID: A gif of a man getting dressed in the Fire Lord’s uniform. The man already has his hair in a top-knot and stays in the same standing position for the entire gif, with one palm facing the front and the other hand relaxed. He has a very small smiley face and is drawn in a messy line art style.
The order of items put on is: zhongyi (a type of Chinese pants and shirt), inner robe, socks, boots, upper foot-guards, greaves (shin armor), forearm-guards, outer robe, bixi (cloth belt ornament that hangs down to the knees), belt, yunjian (cloth shoulder pieces), gorget (metal shoulder piece), and finally the headpiece]
More on my thought process for the different elements of the outfit and some of the culture behind them below.

Environment References for Art
I’ve created an Environment board on my website artideasgenerator.com ’s Pinterest full of reference pictures for thos who like me, have a hard time with drawing backgrounds ! There’s also plenty of refs pictures for character design. I’m hoping it will help other artists too. Go check it out !
Allez-y !
I recently got the magical archives book and there is a lot of character design art in it for like all the characters and theres little notes in there so I just wanted to post it so if you want to use it for art reference or something its here haha.
Disclaimer: This book is in japanese. I do not speak japanese lmao. I tried my hardest to piece together things based off of what google translate said as well as context but if I translated something wrong feel free to correct me and i’ll update this haha.:
o boy i have been waiting for pomefiore i love them
Here’s the general Pomefiore dorm uniform:
Bro i love the pomefiore uniform, i’d kill to wear this tbh.
Vil Schoenheit
Vil wears a long sleeve shirt and leggings under his PE uniform, and he also wears slip on shoes
laughing bc the note just says “there is no loss of clothes”
(sorry for the glare on the page rip) i love Vil’s dorm uniform, like aaaaaaaaaaa. His sleeves and just the robe in general are MUCH longer than the standard pomefiore uniform. The tiara is supposed to look like a vine which is v pretty. I also like how Vil has a grimoire instead of a staff i think that’s pretty cool.
yall WISH you were as pretty as Vil look at this man. gorgeous. literally my favorite character so im probably biased but LOOK AT HIM
Rook Hunt
this man wears his uniform gloves with his PE uniform? ok. also he puts his hair up.
once again “there is no loss of clothes” but idk i think he could lose the hat.
oh rook our camp king. apparently his hair is completely symmetrical which is probably why is so off putting why is he like this. i know i said 20 seconds ago he could lose the hat but he looks wrong without it put it back.
Epel Felmier
i dont know why they went out the way to say he wore ankle socks??? anyway he wears he PE uniform with short sleeves and pants.
Like ruggie a few posts back, his lab coat is oversized on him
country boy i love youuuuu. His hair is apparently sort of 80′s idol style which is kind of fun haha. i love this wee lad.

Alrighty scarabia time!!!! Here is the Scarabia dorm uniform modeled by Jamil lmao:
I really like the scarabia uniform tbh. The belt is twisted so that the design on the part that hangs down stays facing outwards
Kalim Al-Asim
Kalim has a headband for PE and wears the jacket around his waist with the t-shirt sleeves rolled up. also its interesting how he keeps his earrings in while previously it said that jade and floyd take theirs out. interesting lil detail ig
Kalim wears his lab coat open and his goggles around his neck
Kalim’s dorm outfit has quite a bit going on but its so cool lol. His belt actually like, goes over his shoulder which is an interesting detail.
baby. baby boy. the notes mention that his earrings are very dangly. It also mentioned how his face is a little similar to Ace which i can kind of see. he’s so cute i cry.
Jamil Viper
Jamil’s got a hoodie type thing instead of the normal PE uniform jacket and shirt, but he still wears the normal pants.
Jamil wears his hoodie under his lab coat. love that for him honestly i bet its comfy.
Holy shit Jamil is so pretty lmao. The notes say he’s got small eyes, and even without make up his eyes are fairly dark and have an eyeliner sort of look, he also has three braids in his hair and throughout his hair he has a few little gold hair bead things and good god his hair is LONG. Also that one picture of him that looks real mischievous has the note “Jaffar’s face when he is being ill-mannered” and i just thought that was funny.
Anyways thats it for Scarabia! A bit shorter than the other dorms but to be fair theres only two of them lmao. I’ll probably post Pomefiore and possibly Ignihyde tomorrow (Ignihyde isn’t actually too short because ortho has like, hella pages lmao)
also, Jamil is the last character in the book who has overblot design concepts so i may post his along with Riddle, Leona, and Azul’s in a separate post sometime in the future!
I recently got the magical archives book and there is a lot of character design art in it for like all the characters and theres little notes in there so I just wanted to post it so if you want to use it for art reference or something its here haha.

wheehoo heres the Octavinelle uniform:
Vvvvvvv snazzy!! The jacket goes a lil bit past the butt and they have a cummerbund and suspenders
Azul Ashengrotto
Azul wears his PE uniform as standard with long sleeves and pants
He also wears his labwear as standard, and unlike Trey he doesn’t keep his glasses with him because according to the book he keeps them in a glasses case.
Some differences with Azul’s dorm uniform is that he wears a coat which is more voluminous and spreads out like a cloak at the bottom, the bowtie is purple on one side and grey on the other, and the heel of the shoes are steel.
The notes mention that Azul has a more mature looking face than the other second year students, and also that long strand of hair he has is supposed to resemble and octopus tentacle! octo boy i love him. twst show us his merman form this is a threat <3
Jade Leech
Jade wears his PE uniform with long pants and short sleeves with a long sleeved t-shirt underneath, and he also takes out his earrings during PE
Jade wears his labwear as standard (also his earrings are in)
FISH MAN! WOO! the tweels both got a lot going on so alrighty some notes here, apparently, Jade doesn’t really show his teeth when he laughs but they’re pointyyyyy, he also has a very calm face and doesn’t usually show anger often. His left ear has earrings that are sturgeon scales (the book says it’s inspired by Ursula’s spell in the little mermaid where she says “Beluga sevruga” which are both species of sturgeon). His merman form is VERY LONG like, twice as long as a human according to the book he is LENGTHY, also the tweels fish forms are apparently bioluminescent! very cool. and they have webbed hands. freaky.
Floyd Leech
Floyd wears his PE uniform with long pants and the jacket tied around his waist and wears a long sleeve shirt under his t-shirt, also one of his pant legs is rolled up i just noticed lmao. His and Jade’s shoes are the same as well, and like Jade, Floyd also removes his earrings for PE.
Floyd wears his lab coat open but otherwise wears it as standard.
in love with floyd’s lil pouty face in the top left panel lmao. As far as things as his hair and eyes go, it’s pretty much a reflection of Jade’s design, his earring is also on his right ear while Jade’s is on the left. I might have translated this wrong but there’s a note up in the facial expressions panel that says some along the lines of “like a baby” and idk what that means but it makes sense somehow. silly goofy man i love him.
alrighty thats the Octavinelle section! sorry i posted a day later than i said i would i had to fist fight the tumblr post editor because it would not cooperate and i was going insane.
Scarabia is next! I’ll probably post that one here shortly because it’s fairly short because its like, two characters lmao.
I recently got the magical archives book and there is a lot of character design art in it for like all the characters and theres little notes in there so I just wanted to post it so if you want to use it for art reference or something its here haha.

Here is the general dorm uniform for savannaclaw students:
Like, obviously the pants would have a hole for their tails but the fact that its a ZIPPER is so hilarious to me and idk why
Anyway some of the notes on the uniform: The sleeves are a little wider than a normal t-shirt (although Leona and Jack’s uniforms are sleeveless), the shirt pretty much covers half way down the butt (except for Ruggie, because he’s short and his shirt ends up being a bit longer), and the boots are the same on both sides of the shoe.
Leona Kingscholar
Leona’s PE uniform is too cool for extra notes ig. I like his cute hair tie lmao
I’m pretty sure sandals aren’t allowed in labs leona. anyways, he just wears his lab coat open with his goggles around his neck
Some things that leona has on his uniform specifically is he has that, thing, yknow, with the fur and it looks like it was sewn together, idk what it is but its there. He also has leather chaps. king shit.
Some notes from this page: Leona has a scar over his left eye, and he has cat eyes pretty much with the vertical pupils that are round sometimes, he has rounded ears, and his hair reaches his shoulder blades. he is purrty.
Jack Howl
Jack wears his PE uniform short sleeved, there’s a hole for his tail, and he keeps his necklace on
Brb crying about how his fluffy tail makes his coat poof out its so cute. also he wears his goggles right! he’s a good boy yall
The notes say he’s the most muscular character, but also not to make him too rugged looking because he’s like, 16. lmfao. also his wolf form makes me laugh every time idk why.
Ruggie Bucchi
Ruggie wears the sleeves and pants of his PE uniform short, as well as having a long sleeve shirt and leggings underneath
Ruggie wears an oversized lab coat (the arrow pointing to his arm is wear the shoulder line of the coat is lmao) with his goggles around his neck
Some notes from this page: He looks kinda young because he’s got big eyes, he’s got a mohawk type hairstyle like a hyena, and because his tail is so short you can’t actually see it from the front.
Anyways thats it for savannaclaw! I’ll probably posting Octavinelle tomorrow
I recently got the magical archives book and there is a lot of character design art in it for like all the characters and theres little notes in there so I just wanted to post it so if you want to use it for art reference or something its here haha.

starting off: here is the general dorm uniform for Heartslabyul students:
Jesus christ this uniform has so many details ;u; Basic things: Characters are assigned a suit of a card in Heartslabyul, which determines the color of the vest and shoes (between black and red), as well as the little card pin on the jacket (shown below), even the little buttons on the jacket good god there is so much going on.
Some other misc. things: That little rose brooch is actually flat, their belt/ribbon thing is tied so the two ends of it alternate between yellow and black when next to each other. also the Heartslabyul uniform has gloves, but out of the main heartslabyul boys, Trey is the only one who actually wears them.
These are some of the smaller details like buttons, pins, etc.
Ok moving on to actual characters:
Riddle Rosehearts
I think the note says something along the lines of Riddle being short, so the PE clothes are a little big on him lmao
The note mentions that since they wear their uniforms under their lab coats, since riddle wears a bow instead of a normal tie it just goes over the coat.
I love riddle’s dorm uniform so much lmao. also idk how much of the manga we’re considering canon but apparently wearing heels is a rule of the queen of hearts i think and riddle doesn’t actually particularly care for them, don’t quote me on that though.
angry riddle is,,,,,,something. It says his smile is innocent which is very cute lmao
I have the overblot design stuff too but i may put that in a separate post along with Leona’s and Jamil’s
Ace Trappola
Ace ties the jacket around his waist, and his shoes are the same shoes he wears with his school uniform
Ace wears his lab coat open with the goggles on his head (shame on u ace ur gonna go blind)
His eyes are apparently supposed to be cat-like uwu. Also the collar from riddle’s unique magic is apparently heavy and very noticeable
Deuce Spade
Deuce wears his PE uniform with short sleeves
Deuce pretty much wears his lab wear like, the exact way he’s supposed to lol (The note says something along the lines of “If you ignore the bangs, the googles are correct” haha)
Note says roughly “Cool beauty with a little bit of grace” and that he has a sword-like eye. I’m starting to think the character designer really likes deuce haha. Deuce is a pretty boy.
Cater Diamond
Cater wears a white long sleeved shirt under his PE uniform, and also rolls up his pant cuffs (bi king)
Cater wears his lab coat open with the goggles around his neck (again, shame on you)
God Cater is so pretty asdfghjkl. Some stuff from the notes: He has droopy eyes, both his ears are pierced, and he has a more mature face than Ace or Deuce because he’s older. might have translated it wrong but apparently his hair is supposed to be a pompadour???????????????? ok. also hes got a little fang moment going on look at his cute lil fang i love it. And his hair curls under his ears and his hair is roughly chin length.
Trey Clover
Trey wears his PE uniform short sleeved and with running shoes.
Trey wears his lab coat open and his goggles are actually prescription googles :0 he puts his glasses next to his magical pen in his coat pocket
on the bottom panel theres a whole note about “You cant see through the sides of glasses!” which i just thought was funny.
Anyways, thats it for Heartslabyul! I’ll be posting Savannahclaw’s next uwu
I recently got the magical archives book and there is a lot of character design art in it for like all the characters and theres little notes in there so I just wanted to post it so if you want to use it for art reference or something its here haha.
Disclaimer: This book is in japanese. I do not speak japanese lmao. I tried my hardest to piece together things based off of what google translate said as well as context but if I translated something wrong feel free to correct me and i’ll update this haha.
Technically, this is just a reference for the school uniforms in general since it’s basically standard across everyone, but the character used is Deuce, I think just because he actually follows the dress standards like, completely unlike some people lmfao.
The uniform without the jacket:
And here are the gloves for the uniform:
pretty standard ig
Here is the PE uniform:
The format for the numbers on the jacket is NRC - Year - Class & Student Number
Also it looks like the sleeves and pants are made so you can have either short or long sleeves/pants which is interesting
And thats pretty much it for uniforms! Next I’ll post the Heartslabyul portion of the book uwu
ayo i found 2 pages with head angles of humans and animals, could be useful to anyone reading this
Holy FUCK, this is an amazing tool.
Reblogging for my artist fellows.
Reblog this!
yall look at this shit ad*be is tryna pull now on ppl who have outdated software:
(note for context: i’m all for piracy, but in this case my copy of CS6 was downloaded yearsago when they were giving it away to students. i got it totally legally.)
so here is what NOT to do if you’re a loyal fan of adobe who has the cash to shell out for a newer and shittier version of the product you already paid for.
1) DON’T use your search bar to find and open the Run app
2) DON’T type in services.msc
3) DON’T find Adobe Genuine Software Integrity Services and right-click to get a dropdown menu, and don’t select ‘properties’
4) if you happen to click properties, DON’T use the startup type dropdown to locate the option to disable the program. be sure you DON’T click apply to finalize that change.
5) DO NOT do the same thing in order to also disable Adobe Genuine Software Monitor
if you do all of these things, this WILL disable adobe’s ability to monitor the software, and you will be forced to continue using the same older software that you already paid for instead of having to sign up for a newer, shittier version and pay more for it. so if you have lots of cash to spare and are cool with putting it the pockets of racketeering capitalists, definitely don’t do any of these things.
however, you SHOULD reblog this to spread the word, as we certainly want to make sure lots of people know what NOT to do :)
yesterday i reblogged a drawing resource that included how to draw hijabs - and it honestly wasn’t the best advice i’ve seen out there
now, i’m not an artist. but what i saw was a video that included hijab styles most of us don’t really wear and incorrect terminology surrounding niqabs and burqas (yes, there is a difference between the two)
so, i went searching and found a tutorial that i felt was better! these drawing guides and examples come from @/winchestermeg on twitter, and i think they’re really great
this has more relevant examples and correct terminologies, and is drawn by a muslim woman
enjoy, artists of tumblr!
Trying to draw buildings
yo here’s a useful tip from your fellow art ho cynellis… use google sketchup to create a model of the room/building/town you’re trying to draw… then take a screenshot & use it as a reference! It’s simple & fun!
Sketchup is incredibly helpful. I can’t recommend it enough.
There’s a 3D model warehouse where you can download all kinds of stuff so you don’t have to build everything from scratch.
reblog to save a life
This is an incomplete tutorial, and it drives me crazy every time I see it come around.
We live in a pretty great digital age and we have access to a ton of amazing tools that artists in past generations couldn’t even dream of, but a lot of people look at a cool trick and only learn half of the process of using it.
Here’s the missing part of this tutorial:
How do you populate your backgrounds?
Well, here’s the answer:
If the focus is the environment, you must show a person in relation to that environment.
The examples above are great because they show how to use the software itself, but each one just kind of “plops” the character in front of their finished product with no regard of the person’s relation to their environment.
How do you fix this?
Well, here’s the simplest solution:
This is a popular trick used by professional storyboard and comic artists alike when they’re quickly planning compositions. It’s simple and it requires you to do some planning before you sit down to crank out that polished, final version of your work, but it will be the difference between a background and an environment.
FromBlacksad(artist: Juanjo Guarnido)
FromHellboy(Mike Mignola)
Even if your draftsmanship isn’t that great (like mine), people can be more immersed in the story you tell if you just make it feel like there is a world that exists completely separate from the one in which they currently reside – not just making a backdrop the characters stand in front of.
Your creations live in a unique world, and it is as much a character as any other member of the cast. Make it as believable as they are.
Great comments and tutorials!
I’m a 3d artist and have been exploring the possibilities of using 3d as reference for 2d poses. I want to add a couple of tips and things!
Sketchup is very useful for environment references, and I assume it’s reasonably easy to learn. If you’re interested in going above and beyond, I highly recommend learning a proper 3d modeling program to help with art, especially because you can very easily populate a scene or location with characters!
Using 3ds Max I can pretty quickly construct an environment for reference. But going beyond that, I can also pose a pretty simple ‘CAT’ armature (known in 3d as a rig) straight into the scene, which can be totallycustomized, from various limbs, tails, wings, whatever, to proportions, and also can be modeled onto and expanded upon (for an example, you could 3d sculpt a head reference for your character and then attach it to the CAT rig, so you have a reference for complex face angles!)
The armature can also be posed incredibly easily. I know programs exist for stuff like this - Manga Studio, Design Doll - but posing characters in these programs is always an exercise in frustration and veryfiddly imo. A simple 3d rig is impossibly easy to pose.
By creating an environment and dropping my character rig into it, I have an excellent point of reference when it comes to drawing the scene!
Not only that, but I can also view the scene from whatever angle I could ever want or need, including the character and their pose/position relative to the environment.
We can even quickly and easily expand this scene to include more characters!
Proper 3d modeling software is immensely powerful, and if you wanted to, you could model a complex environment that occurs regularly in your comic or illustration work (say, a castle interior, or an outdoor forest environment) and populate the scene with as many perspective-grounded characters as you need!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Look at this amazing addition! This is fantastic!
Not just poses, you can also do this with lighting. Playing with lights in Blender is pretty fun.
Another cool thing: http://www.makehumancommunity.org lets you generate a human model. Like a character creator in a game, but more flexible, and the result is ready to import into a 3d editor like Blender.
This was a lot shorter last time it appeared here. Reblogging for the updated tips and to save a life!

fucked up how colors look different depending on what screen you’re looking at them on. that should be illegal I think
this fucking shit, you know
I spend so much time carefully picking and adjusting the colors in every single drawing I make that I’d probably lose my mind if I didn’t just repeatedly push this out of my memory and pretend it’s not a thing. Why am I reblogging a blank empty post that doesn’t say anything??? Weird
good news! you can’t make sure that everyone will see the correct colors on their own device, but you can make sure your monitor is as accurate as possible for printing and sharing by calibrating it!
there are a bunch of free monitor tests, but here’s an easy one you can use. the passmarkandeizotests are also pretty good, though passmark doesn’t work in your browser. be warned that some tests may cause eye strain.
you can either use the settings built into your monitor itself or use the display color calibration settings in your operating system to adjust the settings until everything looks correct, and then enjoy your accurate colors.
