Launching the Art-Res Artistic Anatomy Notes Ebook!

Hi guys! I worked a long time on this ebook!

image

What’s This?

I make most of my resources available for free on my website, artres.xyz

However, I do need a way to pay for the domain name and keep up the art-res discord sever, create tools like the idea generator, and buy my college books.

This ebook made for those who want to read a compilation of anatomy articles and resources in a cleaner, offline format. It also includes some master posts not seen on the art-res site.

It’s currently 21 pages but will continue to grow.

Note: no external resources or images are posted, only a link to the original source so 100% of the traffic is viewed on the creator’s social media/original site.

Get it!

https://artres.xyz/shop/ or from BMC

bmc.xyz/l/anatomybook

Thank you!

Thanks for reading! If this post helped, please consider reblogging it or sharing it with your friends! ❤️

A wonderful addition to the list!

  • Unsplash. Another whopping huge free images site like pixabay: free for commercial and noncommercial use and remixing; just don’t sell the photos unmodified or add them to other photo-sharing sites.
  • Morguefile.Big old free photo archive from the dawn of the web. “We are a community-based free photo site, and all photos found in the Morguefile archive are free for you to download and re-use in your work, be it commercial or not. • Limited use, if you’re doing a Science and need control panels/rockets/futuristic an image search with qualifier site: nasa.gov You have to double-check a photo’s caption it’s really a NASA photo, but photos which were taken by NASA spacecraft and astronauts are public domain, since they’re funded by taxpayer dollars. (This also goes for images of animals archived at the USFWS Digital Library, i.e the US Fish and Wildlife Service, or rocks and landscapes on USGSwebsites.

Okay updating and consolidating lots of info here; as well as adding links for ease of access. Adding a brief description for some too; as is the case that not all of them have descriptions above.
(Warning that some of these links contain nude refs, I will try to mark where possible which ones have more prominent ones.)

Posing Sites and Apps:

  • Adorkastock. Stock photos for pose refs. DeviantArt gallery started in 2007.
  • FreePhotoMuscle.com. (translated page link click here) Japanese stock photo pose site that includes buff people, but in funny poses and costumes.
  • CroquoisCafe. (NSFW, nude model poses warning) A stock photo pose site. You should be aware this org has been linked as pro-Trump. I leave it to y’all to decide if you want to use the resources or not. I highly encourage not financially supporting them and trying to support the individual models if you can.
  • Line of Action. Fantastic site that includes posing refs, community discussions from other artists, figure study, anatomy, etc. So much stuff in here.
  • PoseSpace. Extensive library of poses. Some free resources others are paid. I’ve not fully evaluated both, but you should be able to use this all mostly free and get great use out of it.
  • SketchDaily. This one is one of the better ones out there. You can time yourself, search by pose, clothing options, body type, perspective, etc. All real models.
  • JustSketch.me. A pose app for any device. Has apps for most devices and a webapp. Customize and pose models/props/scenes.
  • Quickposes. Pose site that gives you timed challenges to become more proficient at poses.
  • POSEMANIACS. Ref site with anatomical poses. All the ref pics are of 3D models with only the bones and muscles. Can be helpful for seeing how muscles behave in certain poses. limited to two body types tho.
  • MagicPoser. A wonderful app that’s great on mobile. Lets you choose size of models, number of them, style, etc. Significant features are use of snap point with the physics engine, adjustable lighting, multiple perspective, 360 angle, articulated hand posing.
  • Clip Studio Paint Modeler. Free 3d tool that works with Clip Studio Paint. You can import your own data or other models you find online. Not quite an alternative to Blender, but the integration with CSP is very nice.
  • Egg a Zyoutatsu Atarichan Drawer. (requires enabling flash player or downloading and using standalone flashplayer) Drawing tool for pose practice. The developer is working on an html5 version.
  • DesignDoll. One of the best pose tool apps out there. You can customize so many things. They also have an extensive collection of ready made poses here. You can use the free or pay once for life and have the poses integrated into the client as well as the ability to export your obj to other programs like blender or smt.

Stock Photo Sites:

  • Unsplash. Giant free stock image site.
  • freeimages.com. Another stock photo site, less features than some others.

  • StockSnap.io. Stock photos with a creative commons CC0 license, which essentially means you can use the photos however you want and don’t have to attribute to them. (though its nice if you do attribute)

  • Burst.Shopify. Tons of royalty free high quality images. Similar licensing to StockSnap.

  • pixabay. I feel like most people know about this one, but it features entirely free CC0 licensed Photos, Videos, and Music. No attribution required, but still nice to support a giant site with all this content.

  • Viintage. Big collection of public domain vintage photos.

  • Gratisography. For commercial or personal use. They specialize in odd, quirky, wild stock photos.

  • pexels. Great free stock photos and videos. Only a few stipulations of what they don’t allow, but their license info can be found here.

  • Faestock. An artist and model with a huge amount of fantasy and fae and other types of photos available. Their terms for use are here.

  • MorgueFile. Old stock photo archive that’s been around a long time.

This is an article recording how the GIF of Snow Landscape was made, including over 6400 words and 35 images.

The price is about USD7.00, but it depends on exchange rates daily.

The technical part would be helpful for those who want to learn pixel art, and the essay part would be enjoyable for those not even interested in pixel art yet.

I’ve been posting some reel tutorials over on the CDI Instagram! I call this method “drop a pile of dice and see what happens”. If you’re not a dnd player or otherwise don’t have a hoard of dice lying around, you could try this with any small objects, like coins, dry beans, or even pebbles!

Environment References for Art

I’ve created an Environment board on my website artideasgenerator.com ’s Pinterest full of reference pictures for thos who like me, have a hard time with drawing backgrounds ! There’s also plenty of refs pictures for character design. I’m hoping it will help other artists too. Go check it out !

Allez-y !

Looking at Pinterest drawing tutorials to make myself angrier and more full of rage

Much has been said about unrealistic female anatomy, but is it not even more bizarre and fucking terrible that <90% of generic male drawing tutorials show some kind of monstrous aftermath of bodybuilding, steroids and extreme dehydration and are like “this is a basic male torso”

In the nicest way possible, if you see this as “basic” male anatomy and all other possibilities as variations on this, your art will be Not Good except in circumstances of dumb luck

99% of men Do Not look like this, ever, at all, and out of those that ever do, they Do Not look like this 99% of the time.

Abs don’t appear defined unless you’re tensing and flexing your whole abdomen, and they don’t appear that defined unless you’re unhealthily dehydrated. You don’t get abs like that in the first place unless you’re doing intense workouts, dumping protein in everything you eat, and probably restricting food unhealthily specifically to get that kind of look

But it’s not a problem just because it’s unrealistic, it’s a problem because it betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of what muscle is and does.

Like, drawing bodies in dynamic poses is not going to be very fun for you if you don’t get that muscle is squishy when relaxed and you’re imagining it as this tough, stiff pulley system

like, if you look at renaissance and baroque paintings of men, which were painted by masters of anatomy who did intensive studies including disections to learn how to depict the male body, the men in those paintings and sculptures DONT look like the above. they almost never have defined abs.

for instance, if you look at rubens abduction of ganymede,

an idealised figure of a man who is meant to be very attractive. hes literally ganymede! but not only does he not have abs, you can see rolls of fat where his trunk bends. his arms are clearly muscular but the dehydrating looking hyperdefinition is clearly lacking. below is michelangelo, who specialized in painting extremely muscular men and did more dissections than the average doctor (apologies for image quality but it shows my point)

so yeah please dont learn to draw men from tutorials that look like that. learn it from secret pope-sanctioned dissections

I just wanna point out that both of these depictions DO have abs. People just learned to associate abs with the forementioned dehydrated, purposefully worked towards look. Looking at Michelangelo you can clearly see the work done on the torso accentuates the muscles there without defining “every can on the six pack”, while in Rubens the skin folds over the muscle as the body bends.

However, the main reason I’m reblogging is because I’m taking a drawing course in university, where we have art history focused on drawings, so I wanted to also add some drawings for those who have an easier time learning through lines instead of painting!

Also keep in mind I learn art terms and terminology in Portuguese, so my commentary in English won’t be the most eloquent thing in existence.

Here is one done by Michelangelo, where the body is bent. Notice how the skin wraps around the hip and “squishes out” due to the bent torso. The man looks large, but still has the rounded up shape of someone who doesn’t do intense work outs at the gym with specific diet restrictions. This drawing also shows the hips-legs connections pretty well imo (since the leg reaches up a bit farther than the bones underneath, visually wise. Unsure if I’m wording this correctly).

Here’s one by Cecco Bravo. Not as detailed as the previous one, but I’m putting it here due to the transition from torso to hips and legs. Although you can see there’s some strength to the person depicted, there is no over accentuated “triangle shape” to the body, and the edges are rounded up rather than “carved”, if that makes sense. Overall, a softer looking figure that still looks heavier muscle wise yet with no actual defenition to the body.

Tungle dot hell user The Grollican also mentioned Rubens, so heres a drawing by him. The body is at an angle, and isn’t as rounded up as the previous two images. The muscles aren’t particularly big (this being a drawing of Christ after all), yet the curves and angles of the body are given by both the direction of the muscles AND the shape of the bones underneath (look at how the skin folds around the waist, for example, without the squishy bulge we saw on Michelangelo due to the different body type). Also I’m including this one because I love this drawing lol. But mostly because you can’t forget your muscle and skin are OVER your bones, and unless you are on the bigger side, they will show in certain poses.

For the last one, here’s Anthony van Dyke’s take. Not a particularly muscular individual, but the skin folding over itself due to the sitting position is simplified yet still looks accurate to reality. Remember, skin folds on all of us when we sit. Fat also folds. I find this hard to draw, so if you do too, focus on making sketches with the bone and muscle structure below to know where the skin (and/or fat) is folding from.

On a final note, I also recommend looking up statues for reference. This is because you will probably find multiple view pics of them, making it so you learn how the body looks like in different poses and angles.

EDIT: also real life modelling classes or pictures of actual nude models. Obviously. My statue and drawing advice is for those who want a drawn or sculpted reference, but it’s always advised to… You know… Use real bodies. This is because artists always end up stylising a bit, whereas models are unadulterated unless you’re looking at a photoshopped image.

Sorry for hijacking the post but I’m passionate about human depictions in art.

Here’s some additions by me, because I have like, hundreds of pictures on my phone of renaissance and baroque art

The first one is Raphael, #3 and #6 is guido reni, i forget the others oof

I didn’t take pics of the male figures from Albrecht Dürer’s drawing guide but i do have pictures of these. the first two are supposed to be the thieves crucified next to jesus and the last one is his self portrait; make of that what you will

if you want references for drawing fit men and characters who are strong/fighters i’ve gotten some good results looking up MMA and boxing photography

(beware of blood and people getting their faces smashed in tho)
