阿波踊りの特に好きなことについて、踊りの演舞場（ステージ）はただの道ということです。
つもり、その期間限定のみだが、いつもの道で想像できないほどの綺麗さが溢れることは大好ききです。
One aspect of Awaodori that I enjoy is that what might be called the “stage” is merely a street.
Or, another way of looking at it would be that the street we see day-in and day-out becomes something beyond our imagination.

Simple moments from the Hatsudai Awaodori as seen through the Nikkor 135mm DC. I so regret only considering this lens for festivals only as an after thought. The personality of the lens combined with the color shift challenges from the mixed lights at Hatsudai forced me to push the color in these shots in experimental ways (while trying to preserve a somewhat natural feel).

I’ve featured this fellow from Maicho-ren before… his intense expression and powerful dance make it impossible not to!
Although well out of season, I plan to begin sharing Awaodori pieces again as a means to keep myself motivated to push on towards exhibiting as well as towards the fitness required for the coming season.

For me no Koenji Awaodori is complete without seeing friends from Hyottoko-ren! I wish I could have caught them in better light this year, but their performance and spirit carry any shot their featured in.

As I slowly pour through the massive collection of shots I gathered at the 59th Koenji Awaodori, I remain still in amazement at the harmony, spirit, and strength on display. Matsuri themselves reflect many great characteristics of people, our ability to achieve results as a group, our ability to express subtle nuances in our art, and the beauty of those captured by the roaring fires of their passion.

Passion and energy define Edokko-ren’s performances and moments like these are why I began to explore using slow shutter and strobes for Awaodori. As you might imagine, it is hard to control the final result, but when you know the performances well enough you can visualize how the scene will form.

Another team I am looking forward to seeing at the Koenji Awaodori is Edokko-ren. Their dance tells a unique story that highlights the roles women and men play in the “fool’s dance” which highlights the foolish nature of both.
