I love seeing the creative things that my daughter comes up with during her playtime. Seeing her come up with ideas like “Barbie’s Got Talent” or engineering cardboard elevators to her dollhouse make me so happy. As a girl I was creative just like her! I would write plays, draft my cousins to be my actors, type out programs for the audience and put on amazing performances for my family! I didn’t realize how my creativity has been passed on to my daughters until this project. What things do you see in your sons/daughters that remind you of yourself?

I struggled with self-esteem issues as a young girl and woman. When I had daughters I was determined to figure out how to raise confident girls to help avoid the many struggles that I faced. I always focus on teaching my girls to discover their many talents and gifts and to take pride in not only their outward beauty but the beauty within. Raising empowered girls is so important to me. My daughters have grown up with constant girl power messages. Sometimes I think it goes in one ear and out the other. I was thrilled the other day when Kennedy’s big sister told her about Rosie the Riveter. She had bits and pieces from her History class and I explained why the iconic image was so important to women. They decided that they wanted to recreate the poster with Barbie. Of course I was beaming all over the place! It is important to celebrate our strengths!! Check her out! Yes We Can!

This was Amelia’s first Barbie, the summer before she started first grade. She had to have four (4!!) teeth pulled so this was her super big reward from the Tooth Fairy. She spent all summer swimming with her in the pool. Thinking about it now, all of her Barbie dolls focus on “doing” something: mermaids, SCUBA Barbie, Pilot Barbie, Entrepreneur Barbie, Astronaut Barbie, Surfer Barbie.
I like that my daughter focuses on what Barbie can do over what she looks like. What a great message for girls!

The day Amelia opened Entrepreneur Barbie I was so excited because as a small business owner myself I want her to take in interest in how business works and to grow with the confidence that some day she can be the boss. This weekend we are having a lemonade stand to raise money for charity, so we talked about branding, social enterprise, customer service, quality control (this means we sampled all the cookies we baked!), supply and demand, overhead and gross/net profits, math and money, and location, location, location.
There are so many chances for parents to turn playtime and your child’s coveted toys into teachable moments. Oh and as it would turn out, Amelia’s Entrepreneur Barbie runs a cougar trapping business.

One of my favorite things to do when I was Amelia’s age was create make believe worlds in my bedroom and play with my Barbie dolls for hours. My little brothers were always kept out and my cat was always my sidekick. I took this photo of Amelia playing in her room a few weeks ago….I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree!

I found this collection of items on my daughter’s book shelf interesting. I teach her “there are many different ways to be a girl”, and I think these items demonstrate that: a photo of her and her dad exploring the beach, a beloved toy tarantula, a lantern from Syria her uncle and auntie brought to her to remind her there is a big world waiting for her, of jar of little trinkets she treasures, two Barbie bangles, and a stack of classic literature about empowered girls.

When I was little and played with my Barbie dolls I would always put things away in a meticulous order. As you can see, my daughter is a bit of the opposite. I watch her play and listen in on the adventures she creates and it takes me right back to my childhood; but then I find something like this and I have to smile at how alike and yet how different we are. I think that is what makes mother-daughter relationships so special.
