So the “real topic” of my bachelor thesis hasn’t really been feathers. The subject of feathers has been the example for my quest to show that illustrations not only convey information but are also a means to generate information for the illustrator as well as the person who looks at the illustration.
While working on this subject, it has become more and more important to me to really look at how I draw / paint, how my sketches work and what is really needed in order to not only make a subject but also a feeling for the subject visible on the canvas. These questions also entail that I tried to examine what happens when paintings / drawings “fail” and at whicht point I abandon a picture. Because of that I have come to see more value in those pictures, which I would normally never have shown anyone else (and some of which you know can look at next to some of my work in progresspics).

Feathers are not only used for protection, thermoisolation and flight but they are also part of the birds’ communication. On the one hand colorful and iridescent feathers are means of expression of fitness especially for the male birds (sexual selection) on the other hand they are also part of a bird’s bodylanguage and facial expressions.
From the top to the bottom: Agami heron, Hoopoe, European green woodpecker, Northern white-faced owl
To ensure function, the feathers need to be groomed / preened: Dirt and parasites need to be removed, secretion of the uropygial gland (located at the base of the bird’s tail) is distributed by the beak, greasing the feathers in order to maintain water repellence and sleekness of the feathers. Running the feathers through the beak, the strands of the feathers are also reorganized and the solid surface of the single feathers are recreated.

Feathers are of course not only important for thermoregulation and protection against environmental impacts such as water an wind, but also for flight. This capability enables birds to access ecological niches that only insects and bats can also inhabit. Being able to fly as gracefully and precisely, the feathers that contribute to flying and steering must be extremly specialized: #1 shows the rectrices, #2 the secondaries, #3 the alula and #4 show the primary feathers of a female common chaffinch. In order to adapt to a specific habitat, birds hve developed different flight patterns: Humming-birds are able to hover on the spot and also fly backwards and sideways.

Contour feathers keep the layer of down feathers dry. Contour feathers of water birds are additionaly coated with a layer of grease (or / and hydrophob dust from special dustfeathers) as shield against water. While all other birds have special skin areas (feather tracts) where the feathers grow and other unfeathered areas called apteria, penguins are the only birds wholly covered in feathers.
From the top to the bottom: Northern gannet, Eurasian blue tit, contour feather (probably greylag goose), Humboldt penguin.
Chicks are either precocial and hatch with feathers as chicken chicks or they are altricial chicks such as doves or pigeons and hatch naked. When growing, feathers are covered in a feather sheath. The feather of chicks are not down feathers though they might look like it. They are special contour feathers, comparable to the “half down feathers” of the adult birds. In the adult bird, the body down is underneath the outer contour feathers.
From the top to the bottom: 2 chicken chicks, pigeon chick, half down feather (probably greylag goose), chicken and down feather of a chicken.

One of the main function of plumage is insulation which is mainly effected by the down feathers. This function was not only used by birds, but also other feathered, non-avion dinosaurs such as the Oviraptorosauria.

Some sketches I drew in my scientific illustration class. You can see a pig’s head (one image of the halved head), a horse’s head, the head and the skull of a lamb and finally two images showing the head of a plaice we hung up on its grills

The storm of the last days took this sparrows’ nest from its place. It still contains two old intact eggs and one opened egg. The nest ist stuffed with pine needles and rabbits’ fur.

Today I found this dead humblebee (Bombus magnus). I guess it’s a queen because of its large size (>20mm).
Bombus magnus is a wildbee and is listed as an endangered species in Germany.
