On Sunday, I desperately had to get out of the house. I am still recovering from surgery, and very tired. I get physically worn out and sore just standing or sitting too long. But it’s so beautiful outside! I asked my SO if he’d give a ride to the nature park so I could shuffle about a bit and sit on the benches, just to enjoy the fall weather. I was lucky enough to see, along with many other birds, a Cooper’s Hawk and this Barred Owl, which I got many photos of, until my camera ran out of batteries.

Then I watched as it swooped down, inches from my head, pounced and caught a garter snake, flew with it into a tree right above me, and killed and ate it. Too bad I hadn’t charged my camera battery before going. -_- I did get photos of that with my cell phone, at least.

(I’ll come back here soon, when I’ve got the energy.)

americasgreatoutdoors:

Always on the lookout for a snack, bald eagles often perch in trees or glide through the air near bodies of water. Large raptors, their wingspan can exceed 7 feet. With their regal white heads, bald eagles have been the national emblem of the United States since 1782 and a spiritual symbol for native people for far longer than that. The oldest recorded bald eagle lived to be 38 years old. Since they usually mate for life, that means eagle romances can last for decades. Photo by  Lisa Hupp, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

This is a friend’s desert (aka Savigny’s or pharaoh, Bubo ascalaphus) eagle owl who decided the bath pan was for losers and instead bathed in the grass next to the bath pan.

This is the same owl as the one in this post and she (probably a “he”, because it’s so small, but we will just continue saying “she” since the owl doesn’t care one bit) is quite the sweetheart.

As the name suggests, she is a desert species.  She gets SUPER excited about water, something Harris’ hawks tend to do as well.  We were positing that since they are both desert/arid species, that they would respond quite vigorously to any water they happened to come upon, even in new places where it is a common thing.  Harris’ hawks will sometimes stop in the middle of a hunt and bathe in a creek or pond when used in falconry, much to the dismay of their human hunting partner.

Enjoy the derpy owl!

Secretary bird - Sagittarius serpentarius

I love me some secretary birds. They’ll up and stomp a snake just for gettin’ in their territory. And don’t come at them when they’ve got eggs! Breeding season is year-round depending upon food supply, so you never know when you’ll be smacked down!

image

Their name is thought to be because of their quill-feathers, resembling a secretary with a quill pen behind their ear, as was common at the end of the 18th century, when the bird was first described by a European.

While they’re one of only two terrestrial birds of prey (the Caracaraof Central America and northern South America being the other), secretary birds fly easily. They’re about 4.5 ft (1.4 m) tall, and primarily hunt small animals. Mice, hares, crabs, and lizards make up the bulk of their diet, but they’ve been known to hunt snakes, tortoises, baby gazelle, and even baby cheetah at times.

A Red-shouldered hawk perches on a tree above the Great Horned Owl Exhibit, at CuriOdyssey. In the wild, hawks and owls are known to swoop down and harass each other if their territories (nests) are too close. Hawks will harass during the day, and owls get their revenge at night. The act can be dangerous for either animal and their young. Soon after taking this picture, the hawk flew away, just outside the raptor yard where CuriOdyssey’s Red-shouldered hawk, ambassador lives. The two then proceeded to “talk” for quite some time as often do.

This is the last photo I have from the raptors, while working over the sumer, at CuriOdyssey. This is Tesla. When tesla was wild, she would come right up to people looking for food handouts. If anyone has come across a truly wild American Kestrel, they would know this behavior is very odd. American Kestrels are one of the most shy falcons, I have ever come across.

Being habituated to people, Tesla was no longer fit to be in the wild. When a wild animal is habituated to people, it poses a threat for both the animal, and the people they interact with. Tesla now lives behind the scenes at CuriOdyssey, and play a very important role as an animal ambassador.

All of the educational animals at CuriOdyssey live behind the scenes, and only come out when they are being presented, to teach the public about their species and the importance of animals, in our environment. This helps reduce the stress in these animals.

tylerknott:

I think wisdom comes from calm. Calm through the winds and storms, calm through the perfect sunlit days. The calm that lets you gently close your eyes and breathe no matter the torrent around you. Wisdom is the unshakable realization that when the dust settles, you’ll be there still…smiling.

Another one easy enough to color, but I absolutely loved drawing the feathers!
