Cafe 1880

Location: 1186 rue St. Denis

Metro Station: Berri Uqam (or Champs-de-Mars)

If you read my previous post, you would know that I recently bought my Indie Coffee Passport. You would also know that my first stop using the passport would be Cafe 1880…

And here we are! Why did I chose this place as the first location? Partially by gut feeling and partially because it’s on my way to school. I haven’t heard much about this place other than from the passport. Which is why I wanted to try it: pure curiosity.

My main fear when going here was its proximity to UQAM University. Although being close to a university is great for the cafe, as a cafe crawler I am always scared to show up and find 0 available seats. It’s the worst feeling when you’ve transited for a good 45 minutes only to find out even that little smaller-than-a-laptop table by the bathroom is taken. Especially, I was going to a cafe this morning mainly to work on a Lab Report and I would be “devastated” if I couldn’t find a proper seat to complete it. But I did. No excuse to procrastinate because this place was pretty empty when I walked in.

I appreciated the seating arrangement here because they had 2 average sized tables with multiple chairs (YAS), many smaller high tables for two and a bar that goes along the window where you can enjoy sunlight. And they were close to plugs: essential when your laptop is old and dies in about half an hour.

The decor of this cafe was exceptional. Mainly because they had drawn a caffeine molecule on the wall. I should get that tattooed to be honest. The atmosphere of the place is dark since the walls are black and has a few bright accents. One one of the walls, a huge “1880″ is painted in turquoise (like their logo). Gorgeous!

The coffee (AKA latte (I (always) order a latte (woops)) was delicious. Even my boyfriend loved it, and he hates lattes or coffee in general. Don’t worry, I still love him though (gotta accept each others’ flaws). The latte art was very well drawn and didn’t bubble up. If you think that’s a non important factor, please let me know how calm you stay when your latte bubbles before you even take it to your table and loses its prettiness and you can’t even take decent pictures. You won’t be calm. It bothers all of us. Or maybe just me, I don’t know.

I decided to also get a croissant, which I never do but should because croissants are great and make me feel French (my priorities in life are amazing). A cool thing about their pastries is that they get them from Premiere Moisson, a well known chain bakery in Quebec.

All in all, I loved this location and will be back for sure! UQAM students - if you haven’t been here yet.. do you even go to UQAM?!

Shaughnessy Cafe

Location: 1455 Rue Lambert Closse

Metro Station: Atwater

First off, sorry for the bad quality pictures. I did the best I could do with an iPhone 5c.. didn’t have place in my school bag to carry my huge Canon.

Shaughnessy - nope, not the one in Vancouver!

I came to this adorable semi-underground cafe on two different occasions with two different people. Both times were interesting experiences..

The first time I came here was during Fall. When we were all still wearing leather jackets since it wasn’t cold enough for winter coats. But it was still relatively cold. My boyfriend hates the cold… so you can imagine that I had to literally take him by the hand during one of our school breaks to bring him here. 10 minute walk from Concordia - oh no - how far away! It was for him. Therefore, he hated the whole experience. Well, to be fair, I also made him walk around Shaughnessy Village for an hour afterwards so I don’t really blame him.

Shaughnessy village? Where is that, you ask? Shaughnessy Cafe is actually in Shaughnessy village (shocker), which is a small area of Montreal near Atwater metro. There’s nothing significant about the area but it’s a gorgeous neighborhood to walk around if you want to see cute houses. Which is great when you have the perfect cup of coffee to go from the cutest cafe around with you fussy boyfriend who refuses to walk in cold weather.

And that’s what I just did. Walking in this cafe, as soon as I opened the door, I was greeted with a little staircase that took me to a semi-underground level. This is an interesting aspect of the place. I realized the cafe was packed. So many people! Some were talking with their friends, some were getting serious work done. The decor in this cafe is neutral toned with some pops of color. Most of the interior is beige except for the bar next to the windows. Honestly the best seats in the entire shop is at this bar. Unlike the bars at other cafes, this one was long and extended to a distance larger than your average laptop. Finally, a place where you have space at the bars to actually get work done. Oh right - and it’s not beige or wooden, it has this cool glossy black and white design on it which is sure to keep you happy (and slightly distracted..) during your studies. I took way too many pictures of it on my second visit.

I ordered a latte. I must admit, the prices here are a tiny bit higher than other places I’ve gone to. The coffee was good. Nothing too special - it tastes like any other average coffee place. Of course I got my latte to go cause my ultimate plan was to make my boyfriend model for my pictures when walking around Shaughnessy Village. Coffee keeps me warm. Guess it doesn’t work for him…

The second time I came here was on a Monday afternoon and the place was empty. Like… empty, empty. No one. Just me and my friend.. and 2 baristas. I didn’t mind cause I got to have the window seats as I wanted. My friend and I wanted to cracking on our studied so we both brought our laptops and took over the entire bar. It was as good as a Monday can get!

Also, Shaughnessy Cafe is right next to Dawsonso if you’re a Dawson student… what are you waiting for?!

Mikko Espresso & Boutique

Location:  403 Rue Main, Hudson

Metro Station: forget about the metro… this place is in Hudson!

Woah, I included a huge strip of photos for this post. But it’s worth it because this place was gorgeous.. and I didn’t drive 45 minutes to only take a few pictures.

So I heard about Mikkothrough an Instagrammer who had been here once and loved it. I guess that’s a good enough reason to go all the way to Hudson for a coffee shop?

My mom woke up this morning and told me she didn’t have work and basically asked me if I wanted to cafe crawl with her. Anywhere.

Anywhere, mom? Fine by me! Since she was down to drive anywhere,I gave her the address of the furthest coffee shop on my list. And we commenced our adventure.

The drive there was b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l in the winter. There was fresh snow everywhere and the trees were all covered in crystals. The snow hadn’t turned into slush yet and they were still holding on to the landscape, making the scenery a real winter wonderland.

Finding the coffee shop, I realized it was a house. An actual house with 2 floors and everything. The door was so beautifully decorated. Walking in, the blue toned winter wonderland we had witness dissipated from our eyes and all we could feel was the warmth of the cafe. I was surprised by its little town cafe charm.

The barista immediately greeted us in what I would think was the old living room of the house. They had a counter now though, of course. My mom started telling her that I was a cafe crawler and did the typical “I’m a proud mom” speech. It was a bit embarrassing, but it’s not like I’ll be seeing the people of Hudson any time soon. I let her talk about my not-so-famous blog and Instagram account.

The cafe had 3 tables and a little bar. I have to admit - there wasn’t a lot of seating, but Hudson isn’t really big so I’m sure they don’t get that packed anyways. Luckily we found a table next to this young couple who were buying a little hat for their newborn baby.

Let me explain… Mikkoisn’t only a coffee shop, but it’s also a boutique where you can buy cute decorations, kitchen items and other adorable little items. Their products were everywhere in the shop, and it added a unique personal touch to the entire place. I loved it. Their stuff wasn’t too expensive either (my mom bought a reindeer tea infused - she couldn’t resist).

The mochas we ordered then came to our table. After snapping about a hundred pictures, I took the first sip. So good! It was rich and creamy and everything you want in a drink. I wish I had ordered one of their croissants too, but maybe I’ll get some next time when I’m in town.

I’m very glad I got to experience a spontaneous cafe crawl outside of Montreal before the end of the holidays.. I recommend it to anyone who’s down for something a little bit different.
