Today is the #gradtaxwalkout. Don’t forget to call your Senator today and tell them you oppose the tuition waiver language contained in the House Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Urge them to not support a final bill that contains this language!

If you have already called your representatives about Trump’s executive order banning people from 7 predominately Muslim countries from entering the US (with exceptions for Christians, of course), here’s some additional comment lines to try.  I haven’t called these numbers myself yet, but they seem like a good starting point:

  • DOJ comment line (comments may be directed to the new pro-ban Acting Attorney General, Dana Boente, who replaced Sara Yates after she was fired for “betraying” the DOJ by refusing to defend the ban):202-353-1555

Other things to call our senators about:
-      Oppose H.R. 7: This anti-abortion bill passed in the house.  It aims to permanently prohibit the use of federal funds for abortion or health coverage that includes abortion.
-      Save the Affordable Care act: The ACA helped millions of Americans gain health insurance.  Sen. Toomey in particular has expressed reluctance to repeal the ACA without having a replacement plan.

ADDITIONAL ISSUES:

#NODAPL
The Dakota Access Pipeline will cross the Missouri River less than a mile away from the Standing Rock Reservation. When the pipeline leaks (that’s when, not if – there have already been three pipeline leaks in 2017) it will endanger drinking water and pollute native lands.  Protests to stop the pipeline have been met with police brutality including attack dogs and water cannons.  Call the Army Corps of Engineers civil works department and tell them to stand up to Donald Trump and not reverse their decision to stop the pipeline.

 WTF, DONALD TRUMP?
Donald Trump lives in a fantasy world where millions of people voted against him illegally in an election that he won.  He thinks the solution to immigration is to build a wall that the American people do not want.  Call Rep. Dwight Evans to ask him to do what he can to curb Donald Trump’s nutty investigation into voter fraud that doesn’t exist and stop Trump from building that #fuckingwall.

  • Rep. Dwight Evans: 202 225 4001(DC)/215 276 0340(Philly)

EXPAND VOTING ACCESS
The state house and senate have introduced bills to provide for early voting and automatic voter registration in PA. Call to show your support for improved voting access in Pennsylvania!

  • State Rep. James Roebuck: 215 724 2227 (Philly) / 717 783 1000(Harrisburg)
  • State Sen. Anthony Williams: 215 492 2980 (Philly) / 717 787 5970(Harrisburg)

SHAME REPUBLICANS FOR KILLING PA JOBS
PA Sen. Scott Wagner led the charge to cancel a senate vote that would have extended funding for unemployment call centers in PA.  His actions led to the loss of 500+ jobs in the week before Christmas.  Now legislation has been introduced to refund the unemployment call centers.  Shame him into supporting PA jobs this time.

  • Scott Wagner (R-York County): 717 787 3817

 LOCAL

Helen Gym, councilwoman at large, went to protest with us against the Republican retreat.  She also co-sponsored the (unanimously passed in the city council) resolution to fight islamophobia in our city.  Call to say thanks and keep up the great work!

  • Helen Gym: 215 686 3420/215 686 3421

Call Mayor Kenney to remind him that we support our sanctuary city status despite threats from Donald Trump and threats from Republicans in our state senate

  • Mayor Jim Kenney: 215 686 2181

Hey there!

Are you an American? Do you have a sec to stand up for the millions of poor people, disabled people, people with pre-existing conditions and freelancers who rely on the ACA to keep them, y’know, not-broke and not-dead? (Hi!)

Do you live in Alaska, Arizona, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee or West Virginia?

Congrats: you have a Republican Senator who has publicly expressed some concern about repealing the ACA without a replacement plan! If you haven’t already, this is your reminder to give their offices a call and help them make up their minds!

Sample call script:  “My name is [YOUR NAME]. I’m a constituent calling to thank [YOUR SENATOR’S NAME] for having the integrity and foresight to see how disastrous it would be to [YOUR STATE] and to the rest of America if Congress votes to repeal the ACA without first agreeing on a solid replacement plan. Not only would it jeopardize the health and economic security of millions of Americans, it would also place a tremendous financial strain on our hospitals and our entire healthcare system, costing potentially hundreds of thousands of jobs. As you know, in [YOUR STATE], we [SOMETHING PERSONAL ABOUT HEALTH CONCERNS SPECIFIC TO YOUR STATE; YOU MIGHT WANNA DO A 30-SECOND GOOGLE. IF NOTHING ELSE SURFACES, JUST SAY YOUR STATE BELIEVES IN SOME POSITIVE CHARACTER TRAIT THAT IS ASSOCIATED WITH KEEPING HEALTHCARE AFFORDABLE FOR AMERICANS, LIKE “LOOKING OUT FOR YOUR NEIGHBOR” OR SOMETHING.] As a voter, this is a vital issue to me, and I will be paying close attention to how [SENATOR’S NAME] votes.”

Call today if you haven’t already, and bug your local friends/family to call, too!

We only need to flip three senators, so it’s not impossible. Do this before this Friday, the 27th.

I’m sorry to ask this of you–I know there’s a lot of these things going around right now–but I depend on the ACA for my healthcare and I’m pretty damn terrified.

There are so many things. So many! But the ACA keeps people alive in a very real way and it is way more popular than Trump, so it’d mean a lot to this healthcare-less funemployed poet if you called your senator.

This weekend I’m facing my fears in my blue state and calling my reps for the like-maybe-fourth-time-ever. I’m with you in spirit, my loves.

Right now (December 18th, 2016, ~3:00pm) there are live human beings answering the phone at the North Carolina GOP comment line!  North Carolina has recently rushed through a series of bills aimed at gutting the power of the incoming democratic governor.  This is a garbage tactic and ignores the will of the voters.  More info at ACLUNY.

The folks answering the phones are very nice and they aren’t asking for zip codes (so call away from out of state).  They’re typing out concerns to send along.  Call this number: 919-828-6423

Ambassador to the United Nations: Gov. Nikki Haley (R, SC)

Haley has no foreign relations, federal government, or diplomatic experience. Her position on many topics (e.g., how to end the war in Syria, nuclear nonproliferation) are unknown.

  • Chairman: Bob Corker (R, TN): 202 224 2244
  • Ranking Member: Ben Cardin (D, MD): 202 224 4524

Secretary of the Treasury: Steven Mnuchin

Mnuchin worked at Goldman Sachs for 17 years.  He left Goldman Sachs in 2002, and became a hedge fund manager with an appetite for buying up failing banks (especially after the 2008 economic crisis) including a housing lender called OneWest.  As CEO of OneWest Mnuchin became infamous for aggressively foreclosing on tens of thousands of homes.  Many of these foreclosures were later found to be fraudulent, leading to multi-million dollar lawsuits.  His company also violated the Fair Housing Act by refusing to lend money to African-Americans, Latinos and Asian-Americans.

  • Member: Pat Toomey (R, PA): 215 241 1090 / 202 224 4254

Secretary of Transportation: Elaine Chao

Chao served as Secretary of Labor under President George W. Bush from 2000-2008.  Since 2008, she has been a frequent contributor to Fox News and has worked hard to support the political agenda of her husband, Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

  • Chairman: John Thune (R, SD): 202 224 2321
  • Ranking Member: Bill Nelson (D, FL): 202 224 5274

Secretary of State: Rex Tillerson

Tillerson has worked for energy giant Exxon since 1975.  He is currently the CEO of ExxonMobil, which has drilling and fracking operations all over the globe – most concerningly in Russia, where Tillerson is very cozy with Vladimir Putin.  In 2011, Tillerson signed a $300 billion deal with Russia to start drilling for oil in the arctic.  However, this deal was put on hold when the US issued sanctions against Russia for their actions in Crimea and Ukraine.  Tillerson is against these sanctions, and would receive massive financial benefits if they were lifted.  Tillerson has no experience in the public sector.  His temperament is reported to be stiff and reliant on corporate hierarchy, and not well-suited to the complex and less rigid structure of alliances between nations.

Administrator of the Small Business Association: Linda McMahon

McMahon’s legacy is the World Wrestling Entertainment company (not a small business by any means).  She has no government experience outside of one year on the state board of education in Connecticut and two failed senatorial bids.  She donated $7 million dollars to Trump super-PACs during his campaign.

Secretary of Labor: Andrew Puzder

Puzder’s first chapter in the political world was in the 1980’s as Missouri’s leading anti-abortion lawyer.  He wrote legislation that he thought would serve as the groundwork for overturning Roe v. Wade in the future, and was appointed to an anti-abortion task force by the Missouri governor.  In 1989 a local Missouri paper published allegations that Puzder beat his wife, unplugging the phone when she tried to call the police for help.  Puzder resigned from the task force and the abuse allegations were dropped.  The next chapter in Puzder’s career was as chief executive of Carl’s Jr and Hardees.  He is responsible for the sexist Carl’s Jr ads that feature bikini-clad women eating fast food in suggestive positions.  His views on labor are anti-worker: he opposes raising the minimum wage, opposes paid sick leave, opposes efforts to make more workers eligible for overtime pay, and he thinks that robots would make much better employees than humans, saying machines are “always polite, they always upsell, they never take a vacation, they never show up late, there’s never a slip-and-fall or an age, sex, or race discrimination case.”  Barring an unlikely complete change of heart, as Secretary of Labor Puzder will be pro-business and anti-worker.

Secretary of the Interior: Rep. Ryan Zinke (R, MT)

During his (very short) time in Congress, Zinke earned a 3 percent voting score with the League of Conservation Voters, indicating low approval from environmentalists. His view on climate change, according to a local paper, is that “It’s not a hoax, but it’s not proven science either.” Zinke does support keeping public lands under federal authority, as they always have been, but he has also supported logging and mining on those lands, which may go well with Trump’s strong pro-drilling stance. He has consistently supported the development of natural resources (e.g. coal, natural gas) over protecting clean water and air. He is a supporter of the Keystone XL pipeline.

Secretary of Housing and Urban Development: Ben Carson

Ben Carson is a brilliant neurosurgeon but a clown of a statesman.  He is not qualified for the position; in the words of his spokesman, “Dr. Carson feels he has no government experience, he’s never run a federal agency.”  He has now changed his tune and says he’ll do well in the job because he has “dealt with a lot of patients from that area” and grew up impoverished in Detroit.  However, Dr. Carson believes that his current success is completely attributable to his individual merit and gives no credit to government assistance.  Carson opposes government assistance programs based on his belief that they create dependency and are social experiments.  Because of his lack of experience/history in the area, what policies he will pursue as Secretary are largely unknown. He has been known to perpetuate obvious conspiracy theories. And he’s Ben Carson.

Secretary of Homeland Security: Gen. John Kelly

Kelly is a retired general, chosen by Trump because of his role leading US efforts to shut down criminal drug trafficking in South and Central America.  His experience will no doubt color his assumptions about all Latino immigrants.  He already considers the southern border an “existential threat” to America.  Kelly wants to keep Guantanamo Bay open, saying “there are no innocent men down there.”  He believes that for women to serve in combat roles in the military, the military will have to lower its standards.

Secretary of Health and Human Services: Rep. Tom Price (R, GA)

Price has been an active opponent of the Affordable Care Act since it was proposed by President Obama. His proposed plan involves providing tax credits to buy private insurance that scale by age, not income, such that any 60 year old person would get a larger tax break than any 30 year old person. His plan requires that insurance companies cover people with pre-existing conditions, but only if there has been no gap in coverage (a gap in coverage means that upon purchasing a new plan, the insurance company is not required to cover treatment related to that condition for 18 months – a policy that is likely to impact the poor and mentally ill most strongly), and allows companies to charge more to cover people with these pre-existing conditions. “Being a woman” is considered a reason to charge more for coverage. His plan also limits the amount companies can deduct on their taxes for employee health insurance costs (which discourages benefits deemed “too generous”) and creates pooled federal funds to pay for people with existing medical conditions who can’t get affordable health insurance on the private market – a policy which has has been tried in 34 states and has largely failed due to underfunding. Price supported legislation to defund Planned Parenthood and proposed legislation that would allow doctors to work directly with Medicare beneficiaries, allowing them to essentially opt out of Medicare and charge more than would otherwise be permitted. He has also voted against: The Violence Against Women Act, prohibiting job discrimination based on sexual orientation, affirmative action provisions, and increased paid parental leave for federal employees.

Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency: Scott Pruitt

Scott Pruitt is the Attorney General of Oklahoma, where he has proven that he hates all government regulations, especially regulations which protect the environment from oil and gas companies.  He believes climate change is an open debate.  He has sued the EPA over the Clean Power Plan, the Clean Water Rule, the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards Rule, the Regional Haze Rule, and the Waters of the United States Rule. (He also disagrees with the Humane Society, the Affordable Care Act, marriage equality, and reproductive rights for women, for good measure.)  He has, of course, enjoyed generous monetary support from energy companies throughout his career.  As Administrator of the EPA Scott Pruitt will try to destroy the EPA.

Secretary of Energy: Fmr. Gov. Rick Perry (R, TX)

During Perry’s 2012 run for president, he named the Energy Department as one of the departments of the government he would eliminate, given the chance (after an embarrassing stumble when he forgot the name of the department altogether). While Texas governor, he supported oil, gas, and wind power – however, in 2010 he wrote a book about questioning the veracity of climate change science, and he has denied human influence on any change. Perry currently sits on the board of Energy Transfer Partners, the firm attempting to build the Dakota Access Pipeline. He has no national security experience, which could prove worrying since the DOE is in charge of maintaining the existing (and aging) nuclear arsenal and runs several programs on nuclear nonproliferation and counterterrorism.

DeVos is a billionaire and a frequent donor to right-wing causes.  Her brother, Mike Prince, is the founder of Blackwater (yes, the private military Blackwater you’re thinking of).  She has no relevant experience in school governance, pedagogy or curriculum.  She is a lobbyist who has unleashed a plague of unregulated charter schools on Michigan.  DeVos is best known for her fierce support for school vouchers.  One of her main motives for supporting school vouchers appears to be religious: she is a Christian activist and wants parents to be able to spend taxpayer money on private Christian educations for their children.  As the Secretary of Education DeVos will try to destroy public schools.

Secretary of Defense: Gen. James Mattis

Mattis served in the US Marine Corps from 1969 to 2013.  Under his leadership in the Iraq war, he instituted cultural sensitivity training for troops and told marines that abusing civilians was counter-productive.  He also ordered the bombing of a suspected enemy safe house, which resulted in 42 civilian deaths – men, women and children attending a wedding – a decision he said took him 30 seconds to make.  After retiring from the military, Mattis joined the board of directors of a blood-testing biotech startup, Theranos.  After an inspection by the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services found that Theranos was not up to standards and that their actions posed an immediate threat to health and safety, the company was slammed with sanctions and is currently under federal investigation.  He breaks with Trump on a few key issues: he knows that waterboarding doesn’t work, and he is against Russia and called Trump’s friendly demeanor towards Putin “ill-informed.”  He is hawkish on Iran but doesn’t want to tear up the Iran nuclear deal.  But before that makes you feel too optimistic about him, “it’s fun to shoot some people,” is a real quote from Mattis – that’s not fake.

*Rules protecting the civilian control of the US military forbid anyone who has spent less than 7 years as a civilian from filling this role.  Mattis left the marines only 3 years ago, and will require a special waiver to proceed.*

Director of the CIA: Rep. Mike Pompeo (R, KS)

Mike Pompeo as a member of the House Intelligence Committee has vocally opposed President Obama’s decision to close black-site prisons (including the prison at Guantanamo Bay) and the requirement that interrogators adhere strictly to Army Field Manual guidelines. He was an opponent of the Iran nuclear deal (supported by much of the international community), and in the process underplayed the financial cost of possibly bombing Iran. He has publicly voiced support for anti-Muslim groups, and has given speeches for groups deemed hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Pompeo also headed the series of highly politicized inquiries into Hillary Clinton’s involvement in the 2012 attacks in Benghazi.

Attorney General: Sen. Jeff Sessions (R, AL) (Confirmation hearing: Jan. 10-11)

Jeff Sessions is a vocal opponent of immigration – he’s opposed every bill in the Senate that discusses a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants and wants to slow the number of legal immigrants into the country as well. He’s faced accusations of racism that prevented him from attaining a federal judgeship in the ‘80s and has been praised by a number of anti-Muslim hate groups.
