Maybe we’re crazy, but we feel like it’s time to say goodbye to our Tumblr friends.The last four and a half years have been a lot of fun, and a LOT of work for one person to manage! Too much, actually, which is why we must leave. But never fear! We will leave this Tumblr up for your enjoyment. And if you are ever in Columbus, drop by and say hello!

Happy birthday, Tony Sarg! The German-American illustrator and puppeteer was born on April 21, 1880 in Cobán, Guatemala, where his father was a diplomat. Tony Sarg’s New York (1927) is one of our favorite books in the collection! Little known fact: in 1927, Sarg initiated the tradition of floating balloons at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade! As if we needed more reason to love this delightful artist.

Happy birthday,  Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun! The prominent French portrait painter was born in Paris on April 16, 1755.  Vigée Le Brun created a name for herself in Ancien Régime society by serving as the portrait painter to Marie Antoinette, seen above with her children. We have Madame Vigée-Lebrun, peintre des grandes dames du XVIIIe siécle (1919) in our collection. Ask a librarian to see anything in our special collections.

It’sNational Library Week, and today is National Library Workers Day! Here’s our buddy Neil Gaiman to tell you why libraries are important:  “Libraries are about Freedom. Freedom to read, freedom of ideas, freedom of communication. They are about education (which is not a process that finishes the day we leave school or university), about entertainment, about making safe spaces, and about access to information.”

He also said: 
“It’s still National Library Week. You should be especially nice to a librarian today, or tomorrow. Sometime this week, anyway. Probably the librarians would like tea. Or chocolates. Or a reliable source of funding.” 

Chocolate is always an acceptable offering. Just sayin’. 

Happy birthday, Louis Raemaekers! The Dutch political cartoonist and painter was born on April 6, 1869 in Roermond, Netherlands. He was best known for his graphic and powerful World War I cartoons which were reprinted in newspapers all over the world. We have several books of his works: Raemaekers’ cartoon history of the war (1919), Raemaekers’ Cartoons (1917), Kultur in cartoons (1917), and The great war, a neutral’s indictment (1916).  Ask a librarian to see anything in our special collections.
