Happy birthday, Louis Raemaekers! The Dutch political cartoonist and painter was born on April 6, 1869 in Roermond, Netherlands. He was best known for his graphic and powerful World War I cartoons which were reprinted in newspapers all over the world. We have several books of his works: Raemaekers’ cartoon history of the war (1919), Raemaekers’ Cartoons (1917), Kultur in cartoons (1917), and The great war, a neutral’s indictment (1916).  Ask a librarian to see anything in our special collections.

Kazimir Malevich - Propaganda posters from the series “Today’s lubok”, 1914.

Lubok is a Russian folk print narrating by simple picture and short text. Malevich here used traditional visual forms to adapt war propaganda for masses.

One of the major successes of contemporary war propaganda is it’s unfailing ability to make those who uncritically accept/spread it actually feel virtuous doing so & hence feel morally superior to those who even dare question it (who in turn are routinely portrayed as heartless).

Anyone who doesn’t immediately believe what’s being reported by Western media is attacked or given a disingenuous, slanderous label of some kind. It creates a kind of frenzy in which to ask for an independent investigation or evidence becomes taboo & forces many to stay silent.

And of course there are very good reasons to be deeply sceptical of such reporting:

Bunch of old school-style War Propaganda posters. These are all modern interpretations of recruitment/morale posters that the US put out in the late 1930s-early 1940s, when we joined WWII. Although it would be awesome if it happened, I have a hard time picturing the US Government putting out something that says “Kick Their Axis,” no matter how clever it is….

I don’t even want to write a review of “Top Gun: Maverick” honestly, I’ve seen 1,500+ movies and I’ve never finished one that left me more depressed about the future of this country. I just want to stop thinking about it
