I finished up this chefs knife for Josephine. I experimented with a hollow grind on the right side of the knife and a flat grind on the left. It’s on the small side for me but perfect for a 10 year old that loves to cook! I also left enough room in the handle for her to grow in to. I hope she gets a lifetime of enjoyment and wonderful meals out of this knife. Perhaps one day, after I am gone, she will still be cooking with this knife and rember the week we spent in the garage making this knife together. I hope that makes her smile.

Peaking out from this morning’s coffee is a blacksmith style chefs knife inspired by a blacksmith knife (that seems to make a decent paring knife).
I’ve got a little wrought iron for the spine, some wrought iron and low layer twist and some low layer random that would help make this beauty shine!
I’ve designed it right about 11" as I plan to heat treat this using the @bavarianblacksmithexp new @jenkenkilns when it arrives. We are excited to have another great piece of equipment at our disposal and will schedule some heat treating classes around that arsenal.

Progression sequence of me forging the low layer block of @bob_rankin_custom_knives damascus out into a Serbian Inspired Chefs Knife.
The block started as a 2"x2"x.7" chunk. It was a challenge to get this shape. The initial isolation should probably have been done woth a round bar instead of that triangle. I had to get in there with a grinder at one point and curve that a little. I also didn’t isolate enough material to forge an integral and decent sized tang. The solution I went with was to forge weld some wrought iron onto the little tang to get it extended. The first time I was “done” I realized just how much metal was still available to expand the shape. I went back to it and got more length and a better shape out of it. It had the additional benefit of making the pattern look super stretched… which it was.
