As the first animated blacksmith I shared here was rather well-enjoyed, I thought it was time to include another - this time two work together to hammer the hot steel much more efficiently. Again made from a set of sequential photographs taken in the 1870s by Eadweard Muybridge (Animal Locomotion vol II, plate 337).

I had to go and get another #ozarktrailknife from #walmart, before they sold out. That’s how good of a knife this is. It’s like a $50 knife, for $9. Its On bearings and smooth as butter. Forging progression of a chefs knife. I like to say, “It looks like shit until it doesn’t”. I hear so much frustration from so many beginner smiths because after a heat or two their metal looks gnarly and nothing like the knife they want to forge. Learning to embrace the funky shapes that are necessary to get the final desired shape is a skill of its own. It’s not unlike growth in our daily lives. We often go through challenging and messy time periods and having the foresight and trust to navigate through them to the otherside makes those times easier to swallow.

Forged copper arm torc. I just love the magical warm glow of forged copper.
This was forged to shape and detail stamped using chisels, no dremel. I prefer the look of stamped in runes to rotary carvings.

There was very minimal grinding - just a lite grit to soften some of the edges and a quick run on the buffing wheel to get some of the high spots to pop.
.
My favorite thing about this one might just be the triangle stamping along the outer edge. If you look carefully you can see where it subtly pushed out the edges in little bulges. They were then cleaned up with the flat side of a small ball pein hammer.

She has survived heat treat and is looking wonderful as ever! Very happy about the improvements I was able to make on forging this one. It’s much closer to where I want it to be. A little more girth between the knob and the blade on the next one and I will be happy.

It was an incredibly cold day, or maybe we should have put the long underwear on, but we managed to get through a knife forging class from bar stock to a hardened dao knife blade. Handle round will come eventually.

Full day class with an inspiring man. He’s 68 and picking up a new hobby. I ran him through the ropes and directed him through the steps of forging a long chefs knife. He was incredibly teachable and responded well to the large amount of information thrown at him in one session. I can only hope that when I am 68 that I can still be as receptive to new information and ideas as he was.

In the end he had a beautiful hand forged 1095 and I learned that you can teach an old dog new tricks so long as we are open to the old Biblical addage, “As iron sharpens iron, so do we sharpen each other.”

Progression sequence of me forging the low layer block of @bob_rankin_custom_knives damascus out into a Serbian Inspired Chefs Knife.
The block started as a 2"x2"x.7" chunk. It was a challenge to get this shape. The initial isolation should probably have been done woth a round bar instead of that triangle. I had to get in there with a grinder at one point and curve that a little. I also didn’t isolate enough material to forge an integral and decent sized tang. The solution I went with was to forge weld some wrought iron onto the little tang to get it extended. The first time I was “done” I realized just how much metal was still available to expand the shape. I went back to it and got more length and a better shape out of it. It had the additional benefit of making the pattern look super stretched… which it was.
