New Song Titles from ‘Father of the Bride’ + Descriptions

From The Sunday Times (UK):

Hold You Now’ - album opener; described as ‘gorgeous’ and 'folky’ and has a choral sample from 'The Thin Red Line’ (a co-writing credit for Hans Zimmer)

Married in a Gold Rush’ - a 'lush country duet’ with Danielle Haim (features the line 'we got married in a gold rush / but the rush never felt the same’)

We Belong Together’ - also features Danielle Haim; described as 'gushing’ and 'an anthem that offers the line “Keats and Yeats/Bowls and plates” yet somehow isn’t annoying’

Unbearably White’ - “'Infighting among white people about who is marginally more or less white is not particularly interesting,’ Koenig shrugs. Is that what that song is about? 'There’s an aspect of it.’”

Jerusalem, New York, Berlin’ - album closer; described as the song 'set for most scrutiny’ on the album. 'The song seems sad, featuring perhaps the first reference in pop to the Balfour Declaration.’

'Father of the Bride’ is out May 3, 2019

VAMPIRE WEEKEND - HARMONY HALL

One of the two singles that Vampire Weekend released in six years.

We took a vow in summertime
Now we find ourselves in late December
I believe that New Year’s Eve
Will be the perfect time
For their great surrender
But they don’t remember

Anger wants a voice
Voices wanna sing
Singers harmonize
Till they can’t hear anything
Thought that I was free
From all that questioning
But every time a problem ends
Another one begins

And the stone walls of Harmony Hall bear witness
Anybody with a holy mind can never forgive the sight
Of wicked snakes inside a place you thought was dignified
I don’t wanna live like this, but I don’t wanna die
I don’t wanna live like this, but I don’t wanna die

Within the halls of power lies
A nervous heart that beats
Like a young pretender’s
Beneath these velvet gloves I hide
The shameful crooked ends
Of money lender
‘Cause I still remember

Anger wants a voice
Voices wanna sing
Singers harmonize
Till they can’t hear anything
Thought that I was free
From all that questioning
But every time a problem ends
Another one begins

And the stone walls of Harmony Hall bear witness
Anybody with a holy mind can never forgive the sight
Of wicked snakes inside a place you thought was dignified
I don’t wanna live like this, but I don’t wanna die
I don’t wanna live like this, but I don’t wanna die

VAMPIRE WEEKEND - 2021

One of the two singles that Vampire Weekend released in six years.

2021, will you think about me?
I could wait a year but I shouldn’t wait three
I don’t wanna be
Mm-mm, mm mm mm
2021, will you think about us?

So sometime last fall we got a submission from someone who claimed that they had an audio snippet of one of the new songs from LP4 (now FOTB) that was played at VW’s show at the Metro in Chicago in August. We didn’t post it because it was illegal audio, but we just got a tip from someone that if you Shazam the clip, the title comes up as “Harmony Hall”, so we tried it ourselves and it worked (as seen above). Ezra recently posted that the first 2 singles from FOTB this week will be “hh/2021″, so it looks like this could possibly be “hh”.

(Thanks to redditor newdorpnewdork for the tip!)

First New Music From Vampire Weekend LP4 Next Week; Update From Ezra

  • New music next week
  • Initials of the album is FOTB
  • 18 songs, 59 minutes long; there will be a double vinyl
  • Three 2-song drops every month until the record is out

Ezra’s full message:

To the fans:⁣

I know that 5-6 years is considered a long time between records. Personally, I think it’s a dignified pace befitting a band that’s already placed three albums in stores but everyone has their own sense of time. (I swear the time between 3 & 4 felt shorter to me than 2 & 3. I may be in the minority on this one.) ⁣

This album didn’t really take any longer to write/record than MVOTC. We just took more time on the front end to chill. I’ll admit I may have stretched out the mixing/mastering process (aka THE END) a little bit cuz spending half the day with my family & half the day at Ariel’s is my ideal life-rhythm & it’s painful to say goodbye to that rhythm.⁣

Many of you have been hungry for information and we’ve given you very little. I don’t like talking abt a project while in the middle of making it. I usually regret everything I say cuz it turns out to be wrong (so disregard anything I may have said in the past 5 years.) I thought abt making a recording diary to tide over the people leaving intense comments but…to me, the album IS the recording diary…man.⁣

It’s called “FOTB” (well those are the initials - that’s a VW tradition) and it’s 18 songs. Picked the name a few years ago. At some point early on, the album drifted from the Mitsubishi Macchiato aesthetic. It was a helpful guiding principle tho. Working titles are important too.⁣

It’s a lot of songs but they all belong there. (If you disagree, you can always say it was 6 songs too long & make a lil 12-song playlist version of it.) At first, I wanted to make two 23-song albums on some human chromosome shit but then 23&me started doing Spotify playlists and I don’t know…felt we’d been scooped.⁣

Is it a double album? The vinyl will be double so…yes? It’s about 59 minutes long. We can talk more abt that later – if u care. To me, it’s just FOTB.⁣

Anyway, we’re gonna start releasing music next week. After all that waiting, you should have the general schedule:⁣

-There will be three 2-song drops every month until the record is out. 1. hh/2021 2. s/bb 3. tl/uw. (plans can change that’s the plan)⁣

Thank you for ur patience,⁣ Ezra

LP4 news: A new song called ‘How Long’ has been registered under EK’s name in ASCAP’s repertory.

This was one of the 5 new songs from LP4 played at VW’s Metro show in Chicago in August & includes a lyric along the lines of “how long ‘til i sink to the bottom of the ocean”.

Being registered with ASCAP doesn’t necessarily mean that it’ll be a single; it could be intended to be used in commercials, TV, movies etc. (or it could be both ‍♀️).

The other credited writers are William Shelby, Leon Sylvers, & Stephen Shockley (Dance/pop, funk, and R&B/soul writers & performers from the 70s and 80s), which means that the song probably includes a sample or interpolation of a song (or songs) they’ve written.

Vampire Weekend - End of the Road Festival 2018 at Larmer Tree Gardens, UK (01 September)

This was Vampire Weekend’s first show in the UK in over four years.

They walked on stage to Peter Gabriel’s ‘Solsbury Hill’ which they later cover during Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa. They also took time to explain that they’re aware they’re not in Salisbury (they Google-mapped it).

Ezra also did a quick Q&A with the fans, where he answered a question regarding the album. He said, “Oh, who cares? No, it’s done. We’ll talk about that later. We hoped we’d be doing a victory lap with our new album. But, you know, this is what happens. Life goes on.”

NME also reported that a fan asked about the vinyl, to which Ezra responded: “Has the vinyl been ordered? Yeah, but the vinyl takes a long time. You know the industry. There’s a real log jam at the vinyl factory these days.”

During the encore, Ezra invited some fans on stage. Loud and Quiet reports: ““Do you know the words to ‘Walcott’?” (Ezra) says (to the fans). They shake their heads. “Ok, you can dance then.””

Vampire Weekend walked off the stage to Boyz II Men’s ‘End of the Road’.

News: There’s a report that Vampire Weekend LP4 could be released in October. Also, apparently according to CT, VW feel “it’s a responsibility to make much better album, if not up to at least the quality of the previous one you made. We don’t live worried about criticism, but we hope the material transcends.” (via Google Translate)

Vampire Weekend debuted multiple new songs from LP4 at the Metro in Chicago (August 5th) - 4 ½ via aux cord from Ezra’s phone & 1 live performance. One of the songs is titled ‘Big Blue’.

Ezra mentioned that they haven’t mastered the album yet (as of this show)  and that “they have a big amount of material with many different versions that they are sorting through”.

Some lyrics from the new Vampire Weekend songs that they played at the Metro:

  • ”We took a vow in summertime // Now we find ourselves in late December”
  • reappearance of the line, “I don’t wanna live like this, but I don’t wanna die” from ‘Finger Back
  • “Boy when we were 21″
  • “When will I sink to the bottom of the ocean”
  • “2021 do you think about us”

The whole show was almost 3 hours long and the band handed out $2 bills to people in the crowd after their set.

Some tidbits: at 20:22 you can hear “boy”, at 50:07 there’s a vibraslap, at 1:33:53 someone says “I think I take myself too serious, it’s not that serious”
