Tonight, tonight, West Side Story helmer Steven Spielberg flexes his filmmaking might as the first person in Oscars history to receive Best Director nominations across six different decades.
The legendary filmmaker earned his eighth category nod Tuesday morning as part of the 2022 Oscar nominations, where his West Side Story musical adaptation also earned notices for Best Picture, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Cinematography, Best Sound, Best Costume Design, and Best Production Design.
Since his first Best Director nomination for 1978’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the 75-year-old has received individual recognition in at least one of the Academy’s Best Director lineups for his work on Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Schindler’s List (1993), Saving Private Ryan (1998), Munich (2005), and Lincoln (2012), winning the award for both Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan at the 1994 and 1999 ceremonies, respectively.
Prior to his nomination for West Side Story, Spielberg had amassed 17 career nominations, including both aforementioned victories and a Best Picture win as a producer of Schindler’s List. He also won the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award at the 1987 Oscars.
Spielberg’s 2022 nod pushes him past the record he tied with fellow Hollywood heavyweight Martin Scorsese, who’s also been nominated for Best Director across five decades for helming Raging Bull (1980), The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), Goodfellas (1990), Gangs of New York (2002), The Aviator (2004), The Departed (2006), Hugo (2011), The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), and The Irishman (released in 2019, but he received the nomination in 2020, bringing the total number of decades to five).

Reflections on: Dark Skies(2013)
- I mainly watched this because it stars Kerri Russell and I’m a fan of Felicity. Check it out hahaha
- Kerri Russell and Josh Hamilton play the parents of two boys - one is the kid from Real Steel (2011). If you haven’t seen this movie it’s just Rocky (1976) with dancing robots.
- This felt almost exactly like Poltergeist (1982) but with aliens instead of restless spirits and sadly none of the charm of the Spielberg movie. Yeah that’s right, I referred to Poltergeist as a Spielberg movie. What are you gonna do, Tobe Hooper?!
- Just like in Poltergeist, the weird happenings begin in the kitchen with mysterious messes and condiment installations. At one point a TV even plays the American national anthem, as it does in Poltergeist, but with a wobbly vibrato effect on it - because apparently aliens make things sound wiggly!
- The abduction elements were also very reminiscent of Close Enounters of the Third Kind (1977) and The X-Files. I love that kind of shit and find it genuinely freaky as I once woke up with mysterious bruises that I couldn’t explain! I want to believe, but alas, I am more of a Scully.
- J.K. Simmons plays an alien expert with many cats and a silly hat. His resources look like they’re straight out of The International UFO Museum and Research Center in Roswell, New Mexico. If you ever get a chance to go there you absolutely must. It’s a delightful treasure trove of bizarre dioramas with the same production value as an elementary school science fair.
- This looked incredibly bland - but I guess maybe that’s just what the suburbs can be like? Everything felt beige.
- My favourite scenes were anything that included art that was supposed to be drawn by children. Always a treat.
- You should probably just watch Poltergeist andFelicity instead! At the SAME TIME.
