Day 15. Jar.

Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar?

I’m a bit behind, but self care is first care, and I don’t want a burn out on November which usually happens to me with Octobers challenges, so sorry not sorry ❤️

During the years that we were growing up, Mother always told us that this had been her Grandmother’s cookie jar. In those days it had an earthenware lid, which nestled loosely on top of the jar itself.

Mother did, in fact, put some of our homemade cookies in it. Since our homemade cookies usually were frosted, each cookie stuck to the cookies above, below, and on either side, effectively creating cookie bricks.

We were a family with 5 children and I am now realizing that Mother must have had another stash in which to hide cookies. A little keg like this wouldn’t have room for even a single batch of the cookies made from Great Grandma’s sugar cookie recipe (whether stuck into bricks or not) and Mother never made the recipe without at least doubling it. Of course all of us did love cookies, so the cookie jar didn’t have to hold each batch of cookies very long.

But writing this has started me thinking. Mother’s Grandmother (our Great Grandmother) was herself the mother of twelve. Now there is absolutely no chance that this cookie jar could hold more than a day’s worth of cookies for a family of 14. So now I am wondering: is this really how Grandma Frase used this jar?

Some time over the years, the earthenware lid disappeared. And I don’t use it for cookies. Any cookies stored inside would be stale long before I managed to eat all of them. So I keep this jar on the corner of my kitchen counter to remind me of many happy memories.

(Also, it is a handy place to stash the plastic bags from the grocery store.)

Something about the matching rooflines and proportions of this house across the alley is just really pleasing and makes me happy, especially with the still-bare tree branches all around it.

It’s just such a perfect cookie jar of a house. It makes me want oatmeal cookies.
