#mayvinylchallenge by @jennn_erator Day 21: Indie Label Shoutout. The label I’m shouting out today is more archaeology than talent scouting—the legendary Yazoo records, which digs up scratchy 78s, many of which survive in only one copy, and put out high-quality, well researched and annotated compilations. They are true music nerds who do what they do because they love it—I consider it vitally important work, and no way is it lucrative! I have one OG vinyl Yazoo, an 80’s compilation of probably my favorite blues artist, Skip James. Look at that wonderful Yazoo peacock label. And I’ve got an untold number of CDs, mostly bought directly from their website which looks like it was designed about 15 years ago Three of my favorite non-single-artist compilations are behind me: Man of Constant Sorrow, a collection of so-called “hillbilly songs” such as inspired the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack, and two prewar blues collections, Mississippi Masters and The Best There Ever Was. All highly recommended.
