#mayvinylchallenge by @jennn_erator Day 26: Highlight a Producer. My favorite producer bar none (though he prefers “engineer” or “recorded by”) is Steve Albini. He is devoted to capturing what the band and the room really sound like, in glorious analog, and no one mics a drum set like he does. I don’t own his most (in)famous production, Nirvana’s In Utero, on vinyl, but here are four of my favorites: his own band Shellac’s masterpiece 1000 Hurts, PJ Harvey’s Rid of Me, The Jesus Lizard’s Goat, and the oddball of this bunch, Joanna Newsom’s Ys. All of them crackling performances that make you think you’re in the room with the musicians.

Last time I was out buying vinyl was Record Store Day (April and May are BUSY months for teachers!), and on that trip I scooped up this amazing copy of Peter Tosh’s Mystic Man. Buk-in-hamm Palace is an incredible earworm, and the rest of the album is well worth loving too.

The label I’m shouting out today is more archaeology than talent scouting—the legendary Yazoo records, which digs up scratchy 78s, many of which survive in only one copy, and put out high-quality, well researched and annotated compilations. They are true music nerds who do what they do because they love it—I consider it vitally important work, and no way is it lucrative! I have one OG vinyl Yazoo, an 80’s compilation of probably my favorite blues artist, Skip James. Look at that wonderful Yazoo peacock label. And I’ve got an untold number of CDs, mostly bought directly from their website which looks like it was designed about 15 years ago Three of my favorite non-single-artist compilations are behind me: Man of Constant Sorrow, a collection of so-called “hillbilly songs” such as inspired the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack, and two prewar blues collections, Mississippi Masters and The Best There Ever Was. All highly recommended.

#mayvinylchallenge by @jennn_erator Day 20: Unpopular Album by a Popular band. Probably absurd to call any Beatles album “unpopular,” but if there is one, this is it! And it’s always been one of my favorites too. Behind me is my preferred way to listen to this album now. Like all their early records, Beatles for Sale was split in two and padded with singles and other material for the American market. Beatles ‘65 and Beatles VI, listened to together, are the entirety of BFS and a bunch of absolutely great songs from the same era (She’s a Woman, We Can Work It Out…) It’s like a deluxe edition.

I think of the 80s as a decade of very staid, safe mainstream music, with so much interesting stuff bubbling in underground scenes (not just punk but hip hop too) that would wait until the 90s to blow up. I’ve got a fairly random sampling of my favorite albums of the era. If you haven’t read Michael Azerrad’s Our Band Could Be Your Life, I highly recommend it!

#mayvinylchallenge by @jennn_erator Day 14: an album we had to wait for. This incredible album by @hopalongtheband just celebrated its tenth anniversary (!). I started streaming it a few years after its release because a student put “Tibetan Pop Stars” on a mix cd for me and you guys that song is everything. So I ordered this directly from the record label, and for a few months heard nothing. (No hate on the label—it’s been almost ten years, I’m sure much has changed since then!) I tried emailing customer service to no avail, so I went to Hop Along’s Facebook and told them what was going on. They were super responsive and it got to me pretty quickly after that, and a few messages into the reply chain I realized I wasn’t talking to a publicity team but to lead singer @francq__ themself! They said if the label didn’t get me one soon, they’d just put a copy in the mail for me themself. I think they said something about “I wish we were coming to your area on tour soon” and I was like “don’t come to houston it sucks.” Five years or so later they finally did come to Houston, GREAT show, highlight of my live music history. So I love you Hop Along and Frances, and I’m wishing a belated happy tenth birthday to my belated but much appreciated Get Disowned.

#mayvinylchallenge by @jennn_erator Day 10: a “grower,” something you didn’t like at first but now do. Welp, I had this one planned before the tragic news about Nick Cave’s son came out yesterday… makes it awkward yet all the more important to feature his album in the challenge! My very first exposure to Nick Cave was shortly after Push the Sky Away came out. His was a name I’d often heard in the same breath as many other artists I loved (Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits…), so I figured I oughta give him a try. Just my luck, I listened to his latest album, which was a huge change in direction and not the most immediately accessible. I came away like “why do people like this guy? Pass.” Boy was I wrong. A few years later I found my way into his older work, and with that context, this album flowered into the brilliance I could not hear on first listen. It is absolutely one of his finest, most beautiful records. But if rhythm and melody are what draw you into music (as they do me), perhaps not your best starting point either!
We fans are sending all our love to Nick after another unthinkable loss in his family.
