Two very welcome additions to the collection arrived today. Italian scores reissued in Japan with one being the French release!
First up is Riz Ortolani’s score for Lucio Fulci’s Perversion Story. Nothing I say could do justice to how magnificent this score is. If you ever see it around, grab it.
Next is the score for the original Italian version of 'Scent Of A Woman’. I adore this score on so many levels. The strings and orchestration on the track 'Parfum De Femme’ are just out of this world. I try to avoid diving into the non horror section when it comes to Italian cinema but, some things are just too damn good!

Iam8bit have nailed it again on the presentation. Gatefold sleeve with ‘eye popping’ 3D image (boobs), poster, replica business card & custom 3D glasses. And that’s before you even crank the wax! Gorgeous pink/white heavyweight vinyl that sounds incredible.
On a soundtrack where I’d imagine most people have most if not all of the tracks, Iam8bit have gone above and beyond to deliver on a killer package. So I can’t vouch for his overall allyship (I am always gunshy about researching things like that for fear of what I’ll find), but an amazing ally story about Chic’s Nile Rodgers: When Chic was producing an album by Diana Ross (the amazing “Diana”), Nile went to his first drag show and saw drag queens playing the part of Diana. So he decided he would write a song perfect for them to use at future shows and wrote “I’m Coming Out.” Ross had no idea what “coming out” meant in the gay community when she sang it, and she was furious with Rodgers when she found out (hence why she is not in this picture). But, too late. The song is an LGBT staple, possibly even cliché. So thanks Nile!

I’ve been pretty obsessed with this band lately. The trancelike state of the slow motion metal, the way it’s often more about the texture than anything else… catnip for me.
Slithering out of isolation from covid because my fever broke last night. Six days cooped up alone… lot of cabin fever. Nice to get back to vinyl, even nicer to get back to my family. A crappy start to my summer, hope the rest goes more according to plan!

#mayvinylchallenge by @jennn_erator Day 26: Highlight a Producer. My favorite producer bar none (though he prefers “engineer” or “recorded by”) is Steve Albini. He is devoted to capturing what the band and the room really sound like, in glorious analog, and no one mics a drum set like he does. I don’t own his most (in)famous production, Nirvana’s In Utero, on vinyl, but here are four of my favorites: his own band Shellac’s masterpiece 1000 Hurts, PJ Harvey’s Rid of Me, The Jesus Lizard’s Goat, and the oddball of this bunch, Joanna Newsom’s Ys. All of them crackling performances that make you think you’re in the room with the musicians.

The label I’m shouting out today is more archaeology than talent scouting—the legendary Yazoo records, which digs up scratchy 78s, many of which survive in only one copy, and put out high-quality, well researched and annotated compilations. They are true music nerds who do what they do because they love it—I consider it vitally important work, and no way is it lucrative! I have one OG vinyl Yazoo, an 80’s compilation of probably my favorite blues artist, Skip James. Look at that wonderful Yazoo peacock label. And I’ve got an untold number of CDs, mostly bought directly from their website which looks like it was designed about 15 years ago Three of my favorite non-single-artist compilations are behind me: Man of Constant Sorrow, a collection of so-called “hillbilly songs” such as inspired the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack, and two prewar blues collections, Mississippi Masters and The Best There Ever Was. All highly recommended.

And it’s always been one of my favorites too. Behind me is my preferred way to listen to this album now. Like all their early records, Beatles for Sale was split in two and padded with singles and other material for the American market. Beatles ‘65 and Beatles VI, listened to together, are the entirety of BFS and a bunch of absolutely great songs from the same era (She’s a Woman, We Can Work It Out…) It’s like a deluxe edition.

I think of the 80s as a decade of very staid, safe mainstream music, with so much interesting stuff bubbling in underground scenes (not just punk but hip hop too) that would wait until the 90s to blow up. I’ve got a fairly random sampling of my favorite albums of the era. If you haven’t read Michael Azerrad’s Our Band Could Be Your Life, I highly recommend it!

A lot of great art on my shelf, but I’ve got to show some love for Papa Emeritus’s package Ghost’s third and fifth albums both come with these booklets of breathtaking woodcuts, one for each song. It gives the whole thing such a luxe feel and I could examine the details for hours.
