That’s not a momma! See the big lump on the end of the nose? This is a gharial, a member of a sexually dimorphic species. Only the males have the nose lump.

So really, this is a hard-working crocodilian dad!
This giant gator was seen taking this leisurely stroll through Circle B Bar wildlife reserve in Lakeland, Florida, on Sunday. The video was recorded and shared by Kim Joiner.

Recent hatchlings of gharial crocodiles on mom’s head, the banks of the Chambal River, India. Photo by Udayan Rao Pawar. Gharial crocodiles (Gavialis gangeticus) are highly endangered with just 200 or so breeding adults remaining in 2% of their former range.
i’m sure people know this, but for those of you who don’t, alligators and crocodiles (this is a gator) have some of the most powerful jaws on earth—if they’re biting down. their muscles are made to clamp and hold while its body twists, taking down its prey and (typically) drowning it. however, they have next to no opening power, meaning this crab’s claw has rendered this gator almost powerless

Last month we FINALLY had the opportunity to visit our dear friend who owns Crocodile Encounter in Angleton, TX! In addition to having the largest captive collection of Nile Crocodiles in the world, this is hands down the closest we will ever come to the magnificent, and critically endangered, Orinoco Crocodile.
This is a freshwater croc with a notoriously small range that can only be found in Colombia and Venezuela (more specifically, the Orinoco River and it’s tributaries, after which it was named). This species can get up to 17ft, with 13ft (and 840lbs) being the average adult size. We are VERY thrilled for our friends at Crocodile Encounters for being one of the few institutions in the world capable of beginning captive breeding efforts with such a beautiful species!
