“To give you context, most of the photographers who shoot major fashion editorials & campaigns are white & male. There are a select group of female photographers who are shooting high level projects but, as far as I know - none of them are black. The fact that I’m Black & Female & a Photographer, who’s main focus is on shooting Men (when most female photographers usually shoot other women), is incredibly significant. And the fact that I’m at the helm of My Own Magazine, that I’ve photographed 100% of the content for, & that will be competing on newsstands with the biggest fashion magazines being published today, is even more significant.”- Dana Scruggs

Dana Scruggs is a black Brooklyn based fashion photographer. She discovered photography in 2013 and since then she moved to New York and has shot for independent magazines like CREEM, Details, Tabula Rasa, and Nu-Mode as well as top name agencies like Ford and Marilyn. Her photography often features sun-drenched environments, dynamic poses, and male subjects. She plans on launching Scruggs, a men’s fashion magazine with graphic designer Eileen Tjan as a magazine that subverts the dominant male photographer/female model norm and instead reflects a black female photographer’s perspective on the normally exclusive world of mens’ fashion.
