Simon POV
“Stop perceiving me,” I plead, curling under my console, the closest thing I have to a small, dark space. (In the Commune, I used to hide under my bed when I felt like this.)
“That bad?” Beni squats down so she’s within my line of sight.
I turn my head towards the metal backing. “What did I justsay?”
She blows a raspberry. “Since when do I care about your bizarre coping mechanisms?”
(At training, she’d pull me out by my feet when I would try hiding under my bunk.)
Baz POV
“Basilton Grimm-Pitch,” a pale blond greets me. He’s smoother than silk when he steps around the bar to wrap me in a hug. “As I live and live.”
“And live, and live,” I reply, hugging him back. “Hello, Braden. You’re looking well.”
He laughs. “I look exactly the same.”
“That’s the joke.” I pat him on the back. “Where’s your boss?”
Braden rolls his eyes. “Not my boss, and he’s up in his penthouse doing his taxes.”
“Death and taxes, huh?”
“Well,” Braden steps back behind the bar and pours me a pint of blood, “one of them had to stick.”

Atro is quick to hug and the first to assume the best of everyone. She was a reaper for the Blade of Grass sub-department with her two sisters. However, after centuries of the same monotony her siblings were both driven to insanity and disappeared one way or another, leaving Atro to wonder if his efforts to entertain (as the littlest sister) just wasn’t enough. Still, he wandered in search of them, leading him to the human department - coveted as having the most morally ambiguous, and intellectually intriguing work. Atro disguises himself as a human department grim, in hopes of finding her sisters there, and for them to have found happiness.
