The AU where Burgess captures Death of the Endless instead of Dream. And where everything does go exactly as wrong as Dream indicated it could have at the beginning.
My idea of the backstory of how Dream and Death became close. Also sets up my Death of the Endless cycle and provides plenty of Sandman and Death cycle allusions. Yeneli is not the “Let the Galaxy Burn” scale omnicidal thug of her later appearances but she has always been an abusive type with a bad reputation.
In this first universe Death of the Endless thinks she can die and doubts she is truly immortal.
I’mnotblessed, ormerciful. I’m just me. I’ve got a jobto do, and I doit.Listen: even as we’re talking, I’m there for old and young, innocent and guilty, those who die together and those who die alone. I’m in cars and boats and planes; in hospitals and forests and abattoirs. For some folks death is a release, and for others death is an abomination, a terriblething. But in the end, I’m there for allof them.
