This pony pepperoni is a pun of Yo-yo Ma’s name. “Mǎ” means horse, and the character is playing with a Chinese yo-yo/diabolo. The slots on the side create a whistling sound when spun. 

Also, Ma’s album with Bobby McFerrin, Hush, is delightful.
