In a recent interview with Newsen, MXM expressed their excitement over the January comeback rush.
Im Youngmin stated, “I’m just thankful. They’re people that I still think of as idols rather than colleagues or seniors of the music industry. They are people are searched as a trainee and practiced from. I did a cover stage of ‘Be Mine’ as well… They were people that I’ve always wanted to meet and greet. I don’t have thoughts about it being a competition at all. I just want to let them know that a team, MXM, exists. I think it will become a good experience. I think it will be good to watch the performances from a close spot.”
As expected, Kim Donghyun showed his anticipation by saying, “Rather than have thoughts that we need to have good results among them while promoting, I think that it’s success enough to show at least a bit of MXM’s charms among that. There’s a lot we learn while promoting. Being able to watch the stage from the side and learn is something I’m thankful for. Although I feel nervous and worried, I’m excited and think it will be fun.”
The two, who mentioned that they feel excited and nervous about giving their CDs to seniors, laughed and said, “The moment we felt that ‘We’re idols too’ is when we went around to greet our seniors. I would like greet seniors whom we didn’t greet last time and give them our CD.”
When asked whether or not they get nervous when going to greet seniors, Im Youngmin and Kim Donghyun huddled their shoulders before answering, “We get really nervous. When we’re waiting outside, we start shaking.” Im Youngmin reminisced, “But our seniors actually greet us in the official way back. During our last promotion, we met B.A.P and EXO seniors, but they were cool.”
Im Youngmin said that the first senior he met during his first music broadcast was EXO. He reminisced, “After finishing the pre-recording, they came in while wiping their sweat, but it was so cool. We’re still juniors by a lot, but when I saw how they greeted us, I realized that superstars don’t just become superstars for nothing. I was also thankful that Pentagon seniors greeted us cheerfully as well.”
Im Youngmin, who chose Block B as the seniors he would like to meet the most, showed his fan nature by saying, “Won’t I be able to meet them during this set of promotions is what I’m anticipating.” Kim Donghyun commented, “My dream, hope, and wish is to meet Big Bang seniors.”
They have currently announced their comeback at a similar time as their friends from ‘Produce 101 Season 2’ such as JBJ, Jeong Sewoon, The East Light, and N.Flying.
When I jokingly asked about their rivalry with JBJ, Im Youngmin commented, “The JBJ friends are doing really well. While looking at them, I have thoughts of ‘I can’t fall behind’, but it’s not in the thoughts of wanting to win over them. They’re friends who are doing really well. I have a thought that if they do well, we could receive that synergy too. This time, Rainz, Woojin, and Hoeseung are all coming out, so I think it will be really good.”
During the last promotions for their debut album, they promoted with ‘Produce 101 Season 2’ members. Kim Donghyun commented, “We filmed ‘Produce 101’ while living in its dorms. At that time, it felt like we were all fellow soldiers. Now, we meet while doing schedules, but it feels like meeting hometown friends.”
Im Youngmin agreed and reminisced, “At that time, it was a survival and I had the mind of a fellow soldier with thoughts like ‘I hope we can last through together’. It was an urgent atmosphere. However, since we’re all meeting as singers, which we dreamed about, I think we give strength to each other. It could feel awkward and tense, but I’m able to gain strength because of them. When I first went to the broadcasting network, if it wasn’t for Sewoon, I think it would have been difficult.”
But among the comeback competition, isn’t there a grade they’re hoping for? Kim Donghyun honestly revealed, “To be honest, I had greed about it at first. Prior to seeing the line-up, my anticipation and hopes were a bit higher, but after seeing the line-up, I dropped it a lot.” He added, “I think I would feel really thankful even if we were just in the music charts. Being in-charts is something to be thankful for.”
Their album title track that they are newly showing this time is ‘Diamond Girl’. It’s a song with a retro and funky feel. Kim Donghyun introduced it by saying, “It’s a fan song for fans. It’s a song we worked on while thinking that our fans are ‘Diamond Girls’.” Im Youngmin revealed, “In this album, we wanted to give back the love we received from fans. We plan to make more places for us to be together.”

Brand New Music’s idol group, MXM, has released their 2nd mini album, ‘MATCH UP’ on the 10th. It’s 4 months after their first album was released. It’s an album that holds the determination of showing the ‘matching up’ of the two members of MXM, who have been with each other since Mnet’s variety show, ‘Produce 101 Season 2’, and their fans.
On January 4th, MXM’s members, Im Youngmin (22) and Kim Donghyun (19) visited the Wikitree office in Seoul, Joong-gu.
Once the two tall people came in, the inside felt like it was packed. They looked much taller than the heights written on their profiles (Im Youngmin is 181 cm, Kim Donghyun is 180cm), so when I asked whether they grew, Kim Donghyun answered, “I keep saying that I’m 180cm, but I think I probably grew a bit.”
After giving a mannered greeting, Im Youngmin and Kim Donghyun took a seat. When I offered a beverage, both of them chose iced tea among an Americano, vanilla latte, and iced tea. Maybe they were thirsty, but they drank it to the last drop.
Im Youngmin did the interview in a calm manner. While quietly listening to what his dongsaeng, Donghyun, had to say, he would say a few words occasionally when it was necessary. Kim Donghyun, who is called ‘Gibaekie (gi-bbeum (happiness)-100%)’ showed that his nickname was fitting as the smile on his face didn’t go away for the entire interview. His large eyes sparkled whenever he talked about music or fans.
— Even if we do well or not, it’s because of ‘Produce’… That’s why we worked even harder
Q. Your second album came out. Compared to when the first album came out, I would think that your thoughts towards it would be different?
Youngmin: We’re coming back to greet our fans with our second album after four months, which can be seen as quite a short amount of time, but we feel really thankful about this. And it’s because we received so much love during our first album, we were able to come back so quickly with our second album… We have a slightly different determination for our second album. It’s something I always think about, but because of the saying that we’re from ‘Produce 101’, if our first album did well, it would feel like we did well because of the ‘Produce 101’ strength. And if by chance, our second album didn’t do well, then that would also be because of ‘Produce 101’. Because of thoughts like these, we thought of our second album as something really important…. Because we want to hear from a lot of people that ‘Ah, those guys are really good’ as Brand New Music’s MXM, and receive love that way as MXM, we planned to work harder during our second time and have our name be known more.
Donghyun: We wanted to show more various sides musically, on stage, and through performances during our second album compared to our first… We prepared harder in order to receive acknowledgement that we’ve grown a bit more. And even in promotional aspects, there were a lot of areas I felt regrettable about because we only did music broadcasts for our previous album for a short amount of time. This time, I hope to promote more in aspects like those, and hold a lot of things such as events where we can be together with fans more often. We plan to do a lot of promotions in order to ‘match up’ more with fans than our last promotion period.
Q. If you were to compare this album with the previous one?
Youngmin:Our previous album was ‘UNMIX’ and this time it is ‘MATCH UP’. If you look at it one way, the biggest meaning behind the ‘UNMIX’ album was that ‘we won’t mix with other groups and show our own style’. And in ‘MATCH UP’, it’s the process of Donghyun and myself becoming more unified. We’ve always said that, ‘Two people with different tendencies will become one in order to show a larger synergy!’, but we’ve become one this time through ‘MATCH UP’. And additionally, I think the largest difference with our previous album is that we plan to show ourselves being more unified with our fans. If you listen to the tracks or the title song on the album, there are a lot of songs that sound exciting. We’ll be able to enjoy it and have fun enjoying it as we become one with our fans. I think that’s the difference.
Donghyun:Even if you just look at the tracks, the title song from ‘UNMIX’ was a tropical house track and was very refreshing. It was a track from a genre that we quite trendy. However, the title track this time, ‘DIAMOND GIRL’, has bit more of a funky and retro feel, so I think there are a lot of differences with the previous album in even the music genres alone.
Q. Your previous song and its music video was very refreshing. Compared to the previous music video, how would you explain the feel of this music video?
Youngmin:This time we did just a bit of acting. (Donghyun: Just~a bit ㅋㅋ) It’s not a large amount of acting, but to us, it was a large challenge… To be honest, we looked forward to the last music video too after filming, but I think it’s a bit more different this time. Even while we were filming it, we were somewhat looking forward to it (Donghyun: The new feeling of it?) Yeah. The two of us were looking forward to it. And I think the excited feeling that it would come out really well was quite stronger. The color scheme is really pretty too.
Donghyun: More than anything, I think that the props and concept itself was really new. Such as clothes that would make us think, ‘Would we ever have a chance to wear something like this?’. (Youngmin: Something you can’t see from us) You will be able to see sides of us that you wouldn’t normally be able to see, so… when you watch the music, I think that there will probably be a lot of points that will be fun. (Youngmin: Facial expressions?) Facial expressions, ah, don’t look too forward to that. (Laughter) I think it would nice if you watched it carefully.
Q. Speaking of clothes, your hairstyles on the album jacket were very shocking.
Donghyun: It’s shocking, right? Haha. It was shocking.
Q. Youngmin did reggae hair, but it’s your first time, right? Wasn’t it difficult while doing it?
Youngmin: Yes, of course it was my first time (laughter). To be honest, I never really thought that I would do reggae hair in my life. We tried out a completely sophisticated street look for our M jacket picture, but it was fun to try it out… I think it was a really good experience. And Donghyun kept saying that it suited me well. So I enjoyed it. (Q. Do you have thoughts on doing it again?) I don’t (Firm in his thoughts).
Q. Donghyun had silver hair, but how did that hair come to be? Did you bleach your hair a lot?
Donghyun:Yes, (Youngmin: He bleached it a lot) I did, quite a bit. Because I bleached my hair so much, I continued to do the bleaching over and over again and saw my hair color change gradually… But it felt like I was slowly transforming. I felt like I wasn’t myself and it was somewhat fascinating. I had a lot of weird thoughts like these. Afterwards, my overall look changed a lot, so I realized that this is why people suddenly take a large challenge and transform themselves.
Youngmin: But to be honest, Donghyun said that he wanted to completely change. And we were able to show that kind of side this time.
Q. Your fans seemed to be sad because you bleached your hair so much.
Donghyun:That’s right. (Q. How many times did you do it?) Five times.
Q. If you’re able to put in another color, what color do you want to try?
Donghyun:If given the opportunity to do something drastic next time, since I’ve tried silver now… I want to do somewhat of a- (Youngmin: Red color?) I think red or something purple would be nice. I want to try a lot of those unique colors.
Q. Youngmin also did red hair before, but do you have thoughts on doing it together?
Youngmin:I will do a different color now instead of red. (Laughter)
— Our title track in one phrase is ‘sparkling’, ‘a challenge’… I think they’ll like the mature ‘LIPS’
Q. If you were to express your title track, ‘DIAMOND GIRL’, in one phrase, what kind of song is it?
Youngmin:When I hear the song, I imagine something sparkling. Sounds like the brass continue to bounce. And I get a feel that it’s sparkling. So ‘sparkling’.
Donghyun: For me, it would be somewhat like ‘a challenge’? We’re doing something this time that others don’t. I think there’s definitely a challenge we’re taking here.
Q. Is there a killing point or place where it would be good for people to focus on in ‘DIAMOND GIRL’?
Youngmin:We focused a bit more on the choreography this time (Q. Is this the ‘ring dance’?) Oh, yes. Ring dance. We focused on that this time.
Donghyun: The point of it is that we show imagery of a diamond ring.
Youngmin:If you look at the choreography, there are points where we’re dancing with a ring or pulling out a ring… There are a lot of points like these within the song.
Donghyun:When you watch the performance, I think the stage in itself will be fun, so we’re looking forward to it as well.
Q. I heard that you plan to do a lot of music broadcasts this time, but you weren’t able to last time, right?
Donghyun:We performed for around 4-5 times previously.
Youngmin:We felt a bit sad about it too. So because of that, we hope to do things more together with fans…. We need to ‘match up’ like that.
Q. Besides the title track, is there a song you like the most among the tracks, and the reasoning behind it? Please recommend a song.
Youngmin:For me, it would be ‘ERRDAY’. I normally enjoy hip-hop, but I feel like I can introduce ‘ERRDAY’ as a hip-hop track that is fun, bright, and playful. In aspects like those, I think that I like it the most.
Donghyun:I have quite a bit of affection for ‘Perfectly Perfect’. Even while recording it, I remember feeling very excited and having fun. And when practicing, I would feel really excited and happy whenever we sang this song. I want to recommend this song a lot of our fans and it’s a song I have affection for.
Q. Is the last track on the album, LIPS, a sexy song?
Donghyun:Yes, that’s right. Rather than something fresh, I think it’s a song where you can see a more matured and slightly more of an adult(?) side.
Youngmin: I think many people will like the song, ‘LIPS’. Since we’ve always shown a bright side of ourselves, I think those who like something like ‘Cold Donghyun [Naeng-Donghyun] (A nickname for Kim Donghyun when he gives a cold and chic feel)’ or ‘Zero (A nickname for Im Youngmin when he’s cold and chic)’ will like ‘LIPS’ a lot.
Q. Do you look up all of your nicknames?
Youngmin:People post it in the comments. When we post on Twitter or the fancafe, we read the comments to those as well. When I see the comments, there are words like ‘Cold Donghyun’ or ‘Zero’. ㅎㅎㅎ
Q. During ‘Produce 101’, trainees searched themselves up a lot then, but did that habit stay with you?
Youngmin:I did it a lot. So there’s that too, but we try to converse a lot… on our fancafe or Twitter. Through looking at those, we’re able to see a lot of what our fans are thinking. (Donghyun: It’s like monitoring.)
— Goal of 2018: We want to create our own album
Q. I think there’s a lot of stories of dating or love within the last album and this album. Is there another topic you would like to try out?
Donghyun:To be honest, we’re still in our starting stages right now and want to give a brighter energy… Since those tendencies are strong, we want to give that kind of message to our fans, so we’re doing bright songs for now. If given the opportunity later, I want to try out a song related to breaking up or try out songs with a slightly darker or quieter feel. To be honest, there are a lot of things that I want to try out musically. Hyung is like that as well.
Youngmin: For me, I just have so many things that I want to try out. And in order to do that, we write our own songs, but if given the opportunity, I want to release a track about my story? About myself. And if you listen to that song, you would either learn about my growing process or learn about me more. I want to release a song where you could learn more about who I am as a person or who Donghyun is as a person.
Q. Some people probably look forward to hip-hop from just looking at Brand New Music’s style while others probably dislike hip-hop. What kind of standards are you using to base it off of?
Youngmin: Although we came from a hip-hop label, we aren’t hip-hop idols. There are opinions for both sides of those, but… I think it’s fitting to say that we just want to be MXM who are idols that can do various types of music. Just as MXM, a group of idols that have artist tendencies. And in order to sing our own songs and show sides of those, Donghyun is writing more self-composed tracks lately and I’ve also been putting an effort in areas like that to write self-composed tracks. I have one goal that I hope could come true in 2018. To make our own album. My goal is to make an album where we make all the tracks.
Q. There was a self-composed track on your previous album, but there aren’t any on this album.
Youngmin: We were lacking a bit on time since we were preparing for this album while promoting for ‘UNMIX’. But we’re still individually writing songs. We’re working hard in order to participate in the next album or albums afterwards.
Q. MXM is already trying out many genres, but do you have any thoughts in wanting to try out a very drastic genre?
Donghyun: If you listen to ‘DIAMOND GIRL’, I think you may think that it’s a bit drastic? And I think this because the moment you listen to it, it’s very funky and has a slight retro feel. It’s a song that can differentiate us and is a bit different from songs that idols create these days. I think you’ll be able to feel that it’s shocking this time.
Q. The two of you are both good at singing, rapping, dancing, and can even write and compose. Is there an area that you would like to focus most on?
Donghyun:To be honest, I wanted to show a lot of sides of being a singer-songwriter, so I wanted to put a lot of focus on personally writing lyrics or composing songs. But since we’re doing MXM, I want to focus first on the music that MXM does. Wouldn’t it be the right thing to innovate upon that while still keeping my own colors. I have a lot of thoughts like those. (Q. Is there a self-composed track that has recently been updated?) Yes. I’m writing a few more songs. Gradually. Even if it’s not the length of a full track, I try to gradually often write at least a line for each.
Youngmin: I focused mainly on rap and dance… But my role model is Park Jaebum senior. I really have a desire for singing too, so I practiced while putting a bit of my focus on singing. So that’s why I sing here and there a bit this time (ㅋㅋ)…. Although it’s small, I think I grew my capability while singing a bit here and there.
Q. Is there an aspect that you feel you’re lacking in?
Donghyun:Of course, there definitely is. While composing… Since I started out doing a band and listen and sing to a lot of acoustic tracks, my song naturally comes out in an acoustic style. Although I like the acoustic style, I want to write various genres. So I feel that I’m lacking quite a bit in areas such as those. So I’m listening to hip-hop music more often lately too. (Q. Do you have thoughts in writing hip-hop too?) If possible, I want to try writing hip-hop too. I want to write one in a similar style as DPR Live, who are really hot these days…. I want to try a lot of things.
Youngmin:My singing is still lacking in an overall aspect. Because I don’t have basics for singing. But something I thought I had was that I’m able to sing at a high range? But because I only have that, I think I concentrated mainly on trying to set up the base and foundation. Since I’m lacking in the foundation.
Q. Then you guys probably are of help to each other.
Youngmin:I receive a lot of advice on singing from Donghyun. Whenever I sing at fanmeetings, Donghyun always slightly mind-controls me.
Donghyun: That’s why the hip-hop songs I listen to these days are all mostly the songs that Youngmin hyung listens to. He gives me a lot of that kind of influence. To be honest, I didn’t know hip-hop that well, but I get to listen to what’s hot these days and there are ones that Hyung tells me about too. I think we receive good influences from each other.
Q. I feel like there would be a lot of things you gain while promoting as two.
Youngmin: I think it’s a really good aspect. If there were a lot of people, then the views on us would be split more, but since it’s just the two of us, you’re able to focus (easily).

Q. You danced the Alpaca Dance and even showed cute acts such as ‘Noona-yah’. But is there another cute act that you’re in the middle of preparing right now?
Youngmin:Ah, this is, not yet…
Donghyun: Yes, we’re still a bit…
Youngmin:Although we do need to prepare…
Donghyun:I’m always thinking about it though. (Q. As to what kind of cute acts you’ll show?)No, about whether or not there’s something else. Since it might be a bit too much to constantly show fans the same thing. I’m always thinking ‘What could there be~?’. Although I didn’t prepare.
Q. I think the two of you have been stuck on rice noodles lately.
Donghyun:We ate it yesterday and the day before too. (Q. Do you keep going there because there’s a tasty place for it?) It’s not like that, but… But there is a place that’s good near our office. It’s the best. Really, really.
Q. Is there a method on eating rice noodles deliciously?
Youngmin:For rice noodles, the best is the original.
Donghyun:I like eating it in the original way or this may be a bit towards personal tastes, but, you know how some people put in a lot of sauce because they feel that it’s a bit bland? But for chicken rice noodles or the original beef rice noodles, isn’t it better to enjoy it for its original flavor. And not put in too much sauce. But also putting in a lot of bean sprouts…..
Q: During ‘Produce 101’, there was a time where you named your fixed pick and Youngmin chose Wanna One’s Yoon Jisung while Donghyun chose Jung Sewoon. A lot of time has passed since ‘Produce 101’ has ended, but if you were to choose your fixed pick now, who would it be?
Donghyun:Mine would still be Sewoon hyung without a change, but I think I would add onto that. Donghan to that. He’s the same age as me and is a friend I’ve been relying on a lot lately. If either of us are having a hard time, we talk a lot about it, so I add him to my fixed pick. 1st pick, 2nd pick.
Youngmin: I don’t think mine would change. Jisung hyung is a hyung I relied a lot on. But, when I search up videos lately, I feel that Woojin (Wanna One’s Park Woojin) is doing well. Although I’ve personally seen Woojin for a long time, when I watch recent videos, hyung views aside, I personally think he’s cool. That’s why Woojin.
Q: Woojin has recently become an adult, right?
Youngmin:Yes. After dancing with Woojin when he was in his 6th year of elementary school and seeing him suddenly become an adult now, it’s a bit… a bit… somewhat fascinating? And good, I think. (Q. Seems like you contact him often usually?) I wasn’t able to normally, but I’ve been contacting him a bit more lately. (Q. I heard that he called on your birthday too.) That really wasn’t that important ㅋㅋ It wasn’t to congratulate. (Donghyun: It really was just a call ㅋㅋ)
Q. Youngmin’s birthday is Christmas, right? You talked about an episode on ‘V App’ where only one friend came to your birthday party, but are there any other episodes that you’ve experienced because your birthday was on Christmas?
Youngmin:I told this to Donghyun before, but the second reason why it’s bad that my birthday is on Christmas is that… when my relatives or older cousins would gather on Christmas, I would receive a present since it’s my birthday. I received a blue, no wait, a green. I received a green robot, but I was so happy in receiving a toy present that was really big. But they gave the same Christmas present to my older cousin in a red color and to my older brother, they gave it to him in a blue color. I would only be receiving one (gift), but others would be receiving two then. That, to me, was a bit… sad… (Donghyun: It’s definitely something to be sad about at a young age.)
Q. Were you able to find that one friend who came?
Youngmin: I did find him, but it’s been awhile since we contacted… and it’s a bit… for me to contact him. Something I’m slightly counting on is that my friend’s mother is friends with my mother. If I received a contact from my friend, I would contact him. But I can’t really contact right now… and I can’t look for him either, because I think a problem might arise if I used an account on the Internet. I hope we could get in contact though.
Q. I feel like you would hear a lot of compliments. Is there something you’ve heard recently that made you feel the happiest?
Donghyun: For me, I like my bright and cute side as well, but I think I feel really proud when I see comments like ‘You’re the coolest on stage’. As someone who stands on stage, I think I feel the proudest when I see words like those.
Youngmin:Rather than a compliment, I remember something I heard that made me feel really good. But even if I post something short like ‘Did you have a good day today?’, I see in comments something like ‘My day was really tiring and hard, but that all went away with just your post’, and when I see something like that, I think I feel quite good. I think it causes me to post things like that more frequently.
— Received a lot of love thanks to ‘Alpaca’… Plans on making an alpaca farm
Q. I feel like there are many fun fans, but is there a fan you happen to remember?
Youngmin:During our most recent fansigning. On ‘Weekly Idols’, I wore a pink turtleneck on ‘Weekly Idols’, and when I performed with Donghyun, I wore a curly wig, but someone wore that exact outfit (to the fansigning). That fan introduced themselves as ‘I’m Youngmin’s hyung’… But I remember laughing a lot with Donghyun at that time.
Donghyun:There’s a fan who makes a lot of calligraphy and bookmarks and gives them, but that fan was an examinee in her 3rd year of high school. She told me, ‘I’m going to study hard in order to become a fan that Oppa can be proud of. I’ll work harder.’ But after CSATs were finished, she came to the fansigning that the ‘Youngmin’s hyung’ fan came to. So I asked her if she did well on her CSATs, but she said she only got 3 wrong on the entire exam. I remember being impressed and saying that she’s really amazing. Youngmin:Of course (Happiness). Last time, I was really happy when I greeted Park Kyung senior on ‘Problematic Men’. And he also came to our CEO’s marriage with Zico senior. Youngmin: To the point where I can say that I’ve collected all the alpaca dolls… (Donghyun:He has to the point where that’s not an exaggeration) I actually plan to open up an alpaca farm. In my room. Q. There are a lot of things/people that Donghyun looks similar to. GOT7’s Jinyoung, B.A.P’s Daehyun, Weki Meki’s Doyeon, actor Kwak Dongyeon, Longguo&Shihyun’s Kim Shihyun, and Pokemon’s Farfetch’d…. Who do you think you look the most like?
Donghyun: Ah, I’m very cautious about this. But to be honest, for characters, I really do think that I look similar to Farfetch’d. And I’m quite cautious about this, but the senior I think I look the most like is B.A.P’s Daehyun senior and Longguo&Shihyun’s Shihyun. B.A.P seniors were there when we promoted ‘I’M THE ONE’, but… it was fascinating even for me.
Q. It became a hot topic when Youngmin pulled out a cushion compact on ‘Produce 101’ and you even become a makeup company model, but do you know a lot about makeup?
Youngmin:I’m actually more the type that does. Although I don’t wear makeup. But ever since I was younger, I liked styling my hair. Putting on wax and styling it. Also, since my skin isn’t really that great, I think I focused a lot on areas like that.
Donghyun:Contrasting with that, I’m more the type that… doesn’t really know things like that. The makeup that I know are just three things which are BB, wax, and hair spray. Just that. Ah, tint, I know tint too.
Q. Donghyun is famous among fans for being a ‘selca master’. But do you have a method? Like an angle or item that makes selcas come out prettily.
Donghyun:Ah, this title is a bit burdening, but I’m thankful that people look at me prettily. Ha, if I have a slight time, I think it’s good to find a filter that suits you… I think that’s a large factor… Because Youngmin hyung is also really improving too. His selca skills. Q: You said during the last WIKITREE interview that you were preparing abs. Are you ready?

Youngmin: “You know how they say singers who received attention during their 1st album tend to have the ‘Sophomore Jinx’. Although we’re nervous as well, I think that rather than that, we just have a lot that we want to show.”
Donghyun: “Although I felt sad that we were only able to promote in Korea for 2 weeks during our 1st album, I think there will be more chances to personally communicate with our fans in Korea this time, so I’m really excited.”
This album’s motif was the fluttering feeling of falling in love. With Brand New’s head producer, Rhymer, leading it, Kiggen, Taewan, and Dongnae Hyung all contributed to fill up the cheerful, up-tempo dance track. The title song, ‘Diamond Girl’, is a song full of the lively message of stealing the girl’s heart, which is like a jewel.
Youngmin:“As much as MXM’s logo is a diamond, we expressed the hearts we want to show towards our fans. We also prepared a performance where it’s like we are placing a ring on a finger.”
Along with this, they took off their fresh boyish charms and emphasized their sexiness in tracks such as ‘ERRDAY’, ‘Perfectly Perfect’, ‘Rush On You’, and ‘LIPS’.
Rapper Im Youngmin and vocal Kim Donghyun seemed quite different. When I asked who their favorite artist was, Im Youngmin chose Park Jaebeom along with the American hip-hop musician, Drake, while Kim Donghyun chose Park Hyoshin and American band, ATC, and English singer-songwriter, Ed Sheeran.
Donghyun:“I normally enjoy acoustic music. Although you could think that this preference is different from Brand New Music’s style, I think not drawing a line on the genre and holding to my preferences will allow me to mature my music for a long period of time.”
Youngmin:“Since my preferences are distinctly different from Donghyun’s, we influence each other and a synergy forms through that. And that’s MXM’s largest asset.”
It’s already been half a year since ‘Produce 101 Season 2’ ended, but weren’t they worried about losing that halo effect. Although they answered with, “If we said we didn’t have any worries, that would be a lie,” they strongly added, “However, we practiced even more intensely.”
Youngmin:“Our appearance (on P101) is a tag we can never take off, but it is also something we’re thankful for. I think we have to show a good side of ourselves this time in order to show that MXM really has the talent.”
Donghyun:“We want to have someone be touched and think ‘These guys are good’ even when someone who hasn’t watched ‘Produce 101’ listens to our songs.”
When asked what areas changed since debuting, they chose the relationship with their parents.
Youngmin: “Prior to debuting, my father would call me multiple times a day and ask ‘Did you do abdominal breathing today’. However, I choke up a bit because now he says ‘I think it’s pointless for me to take care of you like this. You’re really doing well’.”
Donghyun:“I found out by chance that my parents were showing off about their song to people around them a lot. I felt really proud to see them be happy about it.”
How will the future of MXM turn out once Wanna One promotions end for Lee Daehwi and Park Woojin who are under Brand New Music?
Youngmin:“The ultimate goal is for Youngmin, Donghyun, Woojin, and Daehwi to become one as ‘Brand New Boys’. We predicted that our debut would be pushed back a lot, but since we were given the good opportunity of MXM, we will work our hardest in the present moment.”

Q. What are your thoughts of having the first comeback in your life ahead of you?
Youngmin:We were able to comeback after 4 months. I think we were able to come out quickly since we received a lot of love from fans during our first mini album. I want to give back the love we receive through our debut album. I’ve always thought of the second mini album to be important. The first album received a lot of influence from us being from ‘Produce 101’. If the first album does well then it’s seen as the strength of ‘Produce 101’ and if the second album doesn’t do well, then even the good results from the first album will be seen as ‘as expected, it was because of ‘Produce 101’. I thought that there could be a possibility of hearing words like these, so I prepared this time in thoughts that this time is really important.”
Donghyun: Because there were things I felt we could’ve done better on during our first album promotions, I wanted to make up for those areas during this album. I prepared it with anticipation and fluttering feelings.
Q. From what I see from the picture, the concept this time became very ‘street’.
Donghyun: It was my first time in my life wearing clothes like that. It was really fun. I was able to wear clothes that I normally haven’t tried.
Q. What area did you focus on when preparing this time?
Youngmin:Rather than say that we focused on a specific concept for our music, we always prepared a variety of concepts. It’s like we’re trying various things and searching for what fits well.
Q. I feel like you probably put in a lot of effort towards the performance aspect as well.
Youngmin: That’s true. We prepared a lot for our performance. We also prepared a key focus in our choreography. There’s something we prepared where we show the imagery of a ring in our dance.
Donghyun:Our song’s title is also ‘DIAMOND GIRL’, so it’s a choreography that portrays a diamond.
Q. Isn’t MXM’s logo in the shape of a diamond?
Donghyun: It’s like a fan song. It has lyrics that give off the message of ‘I won’t let go’, ‘You shine even in the darkness’. It’s something fans will like when they listen to it.
Q. What words do you think you will feel the proudest to hear through this album?
Donghyun:It’s something I always say, but I think it would be nice to hear that we prepared a lot more musically and performance-wise compared to our previous album as well as that our skills improved a lot too. It would be nice to receive a bit more acknowledgement as artists as well.
Youngmin:I think it would be nice to hear that you feel excited while listening to our album. We had fun the entire time while preparing it, so I hope everyone could enjoy it together with us as well.
Q. Then are the album’s tracks on the exciting side?
Youngmin:Although we prepared a variety of tracks, there are quite a few exciting songs, so I think you will get that feeling.
Donghyun: There’s also a bit more mature side in it as well, so you will be able to feel an opposite charm.
Q. Although it may be embarrassing to say in front of each other, please give each other words of blessing for 2018.
Youngmin:While we did a lot of things at a fast pace in 2017, I hope that we could create a better stage together in 2018.
Donghyun:There were many events in 2017, but I’m really thankful that you were a hyung I could rely on since ‘Produce 101’ and I hope we could do more team promotions where we grow and improve a bit more.
Q. New Year’s greetings towards fans.
Youngmin:I feel really happy to be able to begin our first start in 2018 with our fans. I think we’ll be able to give back with an even larger love to those who gave us a lot of love not only for ‘Produce 101’, but during our first album promotion as well. My motto for 2018 is to enjoy it. We’ll work hard in our second set of promotions for fans to enjoy it in 2018, so I ask for a lot of love.
Donghyun: I hope that everyone could be healthy in 2018. We will show ourselves improving while we promote, so I hope you look forward to it.
Q. How did you spend the end of your year?
Youngmin: Because Donghyun and I received so much love last year and felt thankful, we were able to end it happily.
Donghyun: We worked hard in preparing for the concert and since our comeback was right in front of us, I think we worked hard in practicing for our comeback as well.
Q. You guys are having your comeback right away in January. Somehow, it has become a ‘Produce 101’ reunion.
Youngmin: Whenever we meet, I receive a lot of strength. We also have a good-natured rivalry. To be honest, we didn’t think of it a competition at all, but since we’re promoting together, we end up looking for videos where they do well. We tell ourselves that we can’t fall behind and that we need to do well too and stimulate ourselves like that.
Donghyun: There are still people I contact among our ‘Produce 101’ friends, so it feels reassuring. It feels like meeting hometown friends.
Q. Don’t you meet a lot when going on music broadcasts? When you meet, do you still bring up memories from then?
Youngmin: The reason why we can’t help but talk about then is because those thoughts come up first when we meet. We rely a lot (on them). Since they’re seniors and friends who have done it a few times more as well. If we didn’t know anything and it was our first time, we were feel awkward and tense, but when we see them, a bit of that tenseness disappears. For example, Sewoon promoted a bit more before us, but since we didn’t know how to do the ending stage, he told us how to go on stage and brought us up.
Q. I feel like you probably felt the most different when going on stage for the end-of-the-year Brand New concert.
Youngmin:Since they’re our seniors as well as seniors who do music well and it’s a concert we only looked at when we were trainees, it’s really an infinite honor to be able to stand on the same stage and I think we were able to learn a lot while performing together. What you learn from the sides is really different. It’s a different level from what we learned when watching from below the stage. It was a really good experience.
Donghyun: When we went on stage as trainees, we didn’t introduce ourselves. However, after debuting, we were introduced as singers Kim Donghyun and Im Youngmin and not trainees, so it felt really strange.
Q. You performed ‘나야 나 (Pick Me)’ at Rhymer CEO’s marriage ceremony.
Donghyun:To be honest, I didn’t think that I would be dancing ‘나야 나 (Pick Me)’ after ‘Produce 101’, but a chance came to dance it. And I danced even harder because our CEO and his wife were in front of me.
Q. If you are successful, is there something you would like to receive from ‘Rabeoji’? Since it’s a wish, let’s talk about it comfortably.
Donghyun:(After thinking for a long time) I wish for a slight vacation.
Q. Is it still burdening to be called Brand New’s first idols?
Donghyun: It was at first, and since Brand New Music is a well-known company, I worried a lot of whether or not we would taint the reputation, but I think that allows me to work even harder now. Thanks to the title of Brand New’s first idols, I’m able to work harder and think that we were able to receive a bit more attention, so I try to work harder.
Youngmin:There are a lot of seniors in our hip-hop label, right? Something I worried about is if a lot of people thought ‘if they’re hip-hop, what are they creating idols for?’ and worried that a bad influence would be placed on our seniors as well, so I think it made me work harder. Since it’s an aspect on our abilities, I hope to work hard in filling it and not become a compromise. Our seniors treat us really well and whenever they pass by, they always greet us brightly with ‘Hi, Hi’. They tell us that they’re watching us well and during the concert, they said we were doing really well. I think it’s an aspect I’m always thankful for.

Q. You came back after around 4 months with your 2nd mini album, ‘MATCH UP’. It’s a speedy comeback.
Youngmin:“Even if we want to release an album quickly, it’s not up to us. I think we were able to come back quickly because our fans gave love to our first album. (Our speedy comeback) was thanks to the love of our fans.”
Q. When I saw the jacket picture for ‘MATCH UP’, I realized both of you transformed drastically. Donghyun’s silver hair especially stood out to me.
Donghyun: “The company suggested silver hair to me. It was quite a new and drastic try, but fans unexpectedly liked it, so I feel proud and thankful. My hair became really damaged then, so my hair is currently dyed back to a dark color.”
Q. Compared to the last album, this 2nd mini album doesn’t have a lot of the members’ self-composed tracks. Only Im Youngmin participated in the lyrics for ‘DIAMOND GIRL’. Is there a special reasoning behind this?
Youngmin:“We actually prepared for our ‘MATCH UP’ album while promoting for ‘UNMIX’. Because we were focused on promotions then, we weren’t able to participate in working on our album. We wanted to place our self-composed tracks on the second album as well, but since it had to move quickly, we couldn’t help it. It’s something we feel regrettable about.”
Q. What’s the reason you chose ‘DIAMOND GIRL’ as your title song? Are there areas where you changed musically?
Youngmin: “We didn’t have ‘DIAMOND GIRL’ set as our title song from the start. While deciding what song would be good as a title track, we all discussed it and made that decision together. ‘DIAMOND GIRL’ is a song where we tried out a lot of different things than before. Along with it giving off a funky feel, it also has a retro feel. It’s a fun song.”
Donghyun:“We are sturdier this time musically. Since we prepared it so that even the other album tracks can give off different charms, you should look forward to it. If you felt a ‘freshness’ during our debut album, you should be able to feel a ‘sophisticated’ feel this time. If we emphasized our freshness during our debut as rookies, we plan to appeal with our sophisticated and relaxed sides during ‘MATCH UP’.”
Q. Once you comeback on the 10th, you will be participating in what is being called the ‘January Song Competition’. Aren’t you worried about competing with large-scale singers?
Youngmin: “Rather than be worried, we are anticipating it. I’m really happy that I can personally see the stages of our seniors. I feel especially happy that I will be able to see the stage of Block B seniors, whom I like the most, from the side. Isn’t it already success enough to firmly show MXM’s own charms among these famous and popular seniors? We want to show a charm that’s even more playful and energetic than before.”
Q. I’m curious about what rank you have set as your goal for the music charts.
Donghyun: “Since confidence is important, I want to set my goal high. I think I would be really thankful if we could rank within 15th place and continue that rank.”
Q. What is the goal you wish to achieve through ‘MATCH UP’ promotions?
Youngmin:“Something I felt while promotion for our last album is that since we’re a duo, there’s a limit to what we can show performance-wise. Even our dance formation was either left to right or back to front. (Laughter) We made up for our performance area during this album. In ‘DIAMOND GIRL’, there’s a ‘ring dance’ where we give off the image of a diamond ring. I want to show a cool performance.”
Donghyun:“During ‘UNMIX’, we were only allowed to promote on music broadcasts for around 2 weeks. This time, I hope that we can promote for a longer period on music broadcasts and create more opportunities to meet with fans.”
Q. You guys opened your first fanmeeting in October of last year and met with fans. It probably felt even more different since they were fans who came to only see MXM.
Youngmin: “We entered while wearing suits, but the lights shined on us like stars and the cheers of many people pierced through my in-ear. I really can’t express how I felt at that moment in words. It was electrifying. I could feel that I’m receiving love from this many people, so I felt overwhelmed and thankful.”
Donghyun:“Surpassing chills, it really felt electrifying. It was really a new experience. Near the end, I felt myself tear up.”
Q. Isn’t MXM a duo? Then are there times where you argue?
Donghyun: “Although we don’t not have times where we fought, we make up with each other right away. We really resolve it right away. (Laughter) Since it’s just the two of us, it’s good that we can focus on each other and communicate with each other right away.”
Youngmin:“Since our personalities are opposite, we try to match with each other. Although I’m quiet, if there’s something I want to say, I’m the type to say it right away. Donghyun normally has a bright personality. We match along with each other.”
Q. What kind of songs do you want to show as MXM?
Youngmin:“Although there may be people who think MXM are ‘hip-hop idols’ since we’re under a hip-hop label, we want to do a variety of music. Donghyun will also continue to pursue his acoustic music.”
Donghyun:“Our CEO always encourages us by saying, ‘Since you guys are in a hip-hop company, it’s a definite that you guys like hip-hop and become used to hip-hop. However, never throw away the music that you’ve normally done and I hope that you could continue creating upon it.’. If given the opportunity, I think I should be able to show acoustic music through either our next album or at some place like a fanmeeting. I also learned rap for a bit. During our first fanmeeting, I also did the rap part for ‘Boys And Girls’. (Laughter)”
Youngmin:“I am also working hard in learning vocals. You can hear a short piece of it in our album this time. Although it’s still lacking, I’m working to gradually increase my abilities.”
Q. Does MXM not have any personal promotion plans?
Donghyun:“Although I do have a desire for it, it hasn’t been long since we’ve shown MXM to the public, so I think I still want to show a lot of MXM’s music for now. There aren’t really any personal promotion plans.”
Q. Is there something you want to really do while doing MXM?
Youngmin:“I really want to go to an awards ceremony. It’s okay even if we don’t receive an award. (Laughter) When I saw my ‘Produce 101 Season 2’ friends go to awards, I felt jealous too. It’s something I’ve always wanted to try doing while dreaming of becoming a singer.
Q. You made shining results in just one year from trainees on ‘Produce 101 Season 2’ to becoming singers. It must feel astonishing.
Donghyun:“There really were a lot of events. I think the year passed by in the blink of an eye. 2017 was a really meaningful year to me. It’s when I became an adult, did my first broadcast, and debuted. I also held my first fanmeeting and appeared on a music broadcast. I think it will stay in my memory for a long time.”
Youngmin:“This year will mark the 10th year since I’ve dreamed of becoming a singer. Last year was the time I looked forward to while dreaming of becoming a singer. It still feels like a dream. That’s why ‘Produce 101 Season 2’ will always stay in my memory and makes me emotional. Even when I just hear ‘나야 나 (Pick Me)’, I can remember the atmosphere then and the emotions felt. Even when I meet with my friends now, we talk a lot about ‘Produce 101 Season 2’.”
Q. Haven’t those from ‘Produce 101 Season 2’ successfully settled in the music industry? I feel like you would feel proud.
Youngmin:“Although we competed through ‘Produce 101 Season 2’, we all held the same dream. After Wanna One debuted, the others went back to their own places and prepared to debut, but it felt meaningful that we all met quickly again and I felt proud. It’s something that’s fascinating and that I am thankful for.”
Donghyun:“I still contact the JBJ hyungs often. They’re having their comeback a week later this time as well. Donghan joked around by saying ‘Are we meeting again? I’m tired’. (Laughter) I’m also happy that we may be able to see (Lee) Woojin and Rainz hyungs soon.”
Q. Do you still continue to stay in constant contact with Wanna One’s Lee Daehwi and Park Woojin?
Donghyun: “At first, it was difficult to stay in contact, but we’re doing it often lately. Of course, they’re still busy as always, but since they’re kind, they contacted us on New Year’s as well. I received a call on my birthday too, but they didn’t congratulate my birthday and just hung up. (Laughter)”
Youngmin: “We do call each other, but I think they’re shy. The four of us don’t really say embarrassing things to each other.”
Q. You guys are the first idols from the hip-hop label, Brand New Music. Do the senior singers from your company give you a lot of advice? And is there an artist you would like to work together with?
Donghyun: “Our seniors comfort us a lot. They give us musical advice as well as warm words of encouragement by saying ‘We’re watching you well’. We’re also always thankful because the music PDs say that we should work together. Although I would like to work on music with everyone, I especially would like to do a collaboration with Hanhae hyung. Since I liked Hanhae hyung prior to joining Brand New Music, I wanted to stand on stage and work on music together with him.”
Q. You guys participated in last year’s Brand New Music concert. Isn’t it the first time as artists and not trainees?
Youngmin:“The largest event that Brand New Music hosts is the Brand New Year concert that they do at the end of the year. We stood as back-up dancers for Kanto senior in 2016, but we were able to proudly stand on stage as MXM this time. We also did collaboration stages with our seniors, so it was a meaningful time.”
Q. Please tell us your promotion determinations for this year.
Youngmin:“I’m happy that we could be together with our fans for the new year of 2018. As much as I am happy, I will give back to the love. Because my personal goal this year is to enjoy it, I hope that there could be a lot of moments to enjoy with our fans while doing this set of promotions.”
Donghyun:“The reason we were able to come back quickly with our second album was because we wanted to quickly stand in front of our fans and show a lot of sides. I want to show a varied side of myself than our promotion and showed where we’ve improved in our skills. Kim Donghyun, who showed his potential as a singer-songwriter through placing his self-composed song, ‘I JUST DO’, on their debut album, expressed his hopes by saying, “I feel a happiness from having other people hear a song that I’ve made. I hope that there can be a lot of opportunities to show my own musical color in 2018 as well. I want to show many music genres.” He added on, “I turned 21 this year. I spent last year busily at the age of 20, so I hope to become more mature this year.”

Through that, Park Woojin and Lee Daehwi went onto debut as the project group, Wanna One, while Im Youngmin and Kim Donghyun debuted through Brand New Music’s unit group, MXM. Although they are promoting under different groups, they still hold close relationships with each other.
Im Youngmin commented, “The calls with Woojin usually consist of almost meaningless topics.” He added, “I had a missed call from last Christmas, so I called him back, but he suddenly said, ‘What’. I told him ‘You called me first’, but he said ‘I don’t know why I called’. That day was actually my birthday, so I think he called to congratulate me.”
He continued by saying, “We didn’t have the time to contact each other at the beginning of our debuts, because we were busy. However, since we have more time now, we contact each other more often. We joked saying that ‘We’re tired of seeing each other, because we see each other so often’, but I was happy to be able to promote together with a friend.” He showed his thanks by saying, “Since I’m from Daejeon, I don’t really have friends in Seoul to talk about my problems with. Continuing on from last year, there are many comebacks of ‘Produce 101 Season 2’ singers in the first month of the new year. Along with MXM, who are revealing their 2nd mini album <MATCH UP>, there will be or have been the comebacks of N.Flying, JBJ, Rainz, The East Light, and Jung Sewoon. Kim Donghyun showed his anticipation in promoting with his colleagues by saying, “We all spent time like family when filming for ‘Produce 101 Season 2’. Even if we see each other after a long time, it feels comfortable as if I’m meeting my hometown friends.”
