What I love most about Skyrim (and TES in general) is how, once the surface is at all scratched, you’re confronted with the most buckwild lore in the history of ever. Like, Skyrim’s baseline experience is: you are a person born with the soul of a dragon, which means you can absorb their souls and speak their language. Fair enough! There are two moons! And vampires! Giants herd mammoths across the plains!

But then! Dig a little deeper, and it’s all “yeah, there are two moons, but they aren’t really moons, they’re the corpse of the god who tricked all the other gods into creating the world, and mortals just interpret them as moons”, and “an entire race created technology that runs on souls, and they accidentally erased themselves from existence while trying to become gods, well at least that’s our best guess”and “some dudes replaced their hearts with plants and you can pickpocket the plant-heart right out of their chest”and “here’s a weapon that sometimes turns your enemies into pastries”

What a game, you guys.

Cannot stress enough that Elder Scrolls is just like this and furthermore the older games are much more blatant with this kind of thing. One of the major plot points in Morrowind is that it’s possible for a mortal to achieve godhood through a process called Chim. This process has been described as a general sense of perfect enlightenment (i.e. Nirvanna Special Edition), but more specifically its strongly implied to be that the specific method is realizing that the entire universe is a dream held by some unknown godhead and not letting that knowledge just straight up zero-sum you, with the god powers coming from the equivalent of lucid dreaming.

But to go even further, some people believe that Chim is even more serious and comes from straight up realizing you’re a video game character.

commission for @motherhenna of her wonderful skyrim OCs!

Am I the only one who thinks it was a totally missed opportunity to call the main quest in Elsweyr the “Mane Quest” or what

I think im an idiot

Ok so I’m replaying skyrim to get all the trophies or achievements or whatever with no mods (bc i always play with mods) anddd im gonna go into depth with what happened and why I’m pissed.

Ok so i was coming up on Darklight Tower from the south, bc I had just found the Ruins of Rkund and I enter Darklight Tower from the top, I kill a hagraven and a hag, and i go about my bidness.

I THOUGHT it was just another fort just filled with witches and hags rather than bandits, but stupid old me forgot about the quest “Repentance” and that I had apparently already fucked everything up by going through this bitch backwards.

Remember, this is my 100% playthrough. My aim was to finish every quest. And. I had already gone back and forth through the dungeon completely before I realized what I did and by the time I figured it out I had already used my 3 autosaves and my quicksave going back and forth trying to do this fucking fort and my last hardsave was.. too long ago.

Sosososo I looked it up and there is apparently a way to fix it.

Using console commands.

And I play on ps4.

Is it clear that I want to die yet?? Now this quest is gonna sit unfinished in my journal forever and I can’t do shit about it. I tried killing Illia hoping it would fail me but nothing happened. Now I’m just. Idk. Its really not a big deal but it really pisses me off that this happened on the one character I’m trying to 100% skyrim with.

Learn from me, kids.

Quicksaves aren’t enough.

Be SURE you hardsave too just in case you fuck up majorly like I just did.

You forgot about the Divine Crusader, Pelinal Whitestrake, the time-traveling cyborg Michael Kirkbride confirmed was gay.

i mean yeah that’s true but michael kirkbride is a fucking twat and everything he says is stupid and irrelevant

Really? That’s unfortunate.

yeahhh….

in other news, the divine crusader pelinal whitestrake, the time travelling cyborg was confirmed gay by none other than me!

I trust our new lore master Stella

Aren’t most of the daedric gods (save the ones that weren’t there for the creation of Nirn like Malacath (maybe even him too)), like aren’t they all nb?? Some like Boethiah actively go by both and you

cannot

convince me that Hermaeus Mora isnt nb,,,

and they just take any form they want dont they? Since they technically have no gender? So they’d all be trans at least, if not nb

Did You Know: According to “The Real Barenziah”, the eponymous queen had an affair with Tiber Septim, that ended with her pregnancy? Once she informed the emperor that she was in the family way, Tiber immediately informed her that the child could not be allowed to live, and with the help of his court healer, forcibly ended Barenziah’s pregnancy, against her own wishes.

We gotta kill Tiber Septim again

This entire story upset me so much I made up Felicia to make myself stop feeling so sick every time I thought of it. In the story, the court healer protested terminating Barenziah’s pregnancy, because it had the chance of making her infertile for the rest of her life, and completely aside from her own thoughts on the matter, she was the last heir to the Dunmeri royal line. If she was rendered barren, the line would have ended. Tiber Septim didn’t care, and basically strongarmed/threatened the healer into it.

In Felicia’s story, then, he induced early labor to terminate, and she was born premature, but alive. He didn’t tell Tiber because he was sickened at the thought of the baby being outright killed after having survived this long, and took her home to his wife to die in comfort. His wife, however, was a midwife healer, and through her skills Felicia lived. The guilt-ridden court healer now became the terrified court healer, quit his job, and adopted her. She only found out who and what she was when he deathbed confessed it to her, and went through quite a few years of bitterness about it.

It makes me want to cry…

8 divines forever

Fuck a mortal god

((Unless its Sheogorath))

And i nominate

To be our ninth divine instead

Who cares if your OC is a self insert

My main OC is my apathy personified. He says all the smartass things I would say if I wasn’t a coward. He’s short small and scrawny like me. He’s got wild spiky hair like me. And his main personality trait is his and also my biggest flaw: not caring enough about anything. He’s me, and he’s valid because I’m valid.

Another OC of mine is a coward. He avoids combat at all costs, a complete pacifist just like me. He’s creative and a little eccentric and can’t bring himself to hate anyone, no matter what they’ve done. That’s also his biggest flaw, forgiving people too easily and not knowing when or how to stand up for himself, a big flaw I struggle with on the daily.

Another OC is a total anti-conformist. She’s a rebel to the grave and is for anything that’s anti-systematic. She goes out of her way to do what other people aren’t and she doesn’t trust anyone. This lack of trust is her biggest flaw and she often finds herself alone because she’s hostile to everything and everyone, even if she doesnt mean it, which is why I find myself alone a lot.

Idk where I’m going with this, this is just stream of consciousness type shit, but the point is that its okay to have self inserts. In a world like elder scrolls, or a world that you create on your own, where you can make whoever be whatever you want, why wouldn’t you put a piece of you in there? Even if it’s an ideal version of you, thats okay because sometimes people need to live out those fantasies to make themselves feel good when they’re insecure. It’s also a good way to personify your problems, like my apathy or my cowardice, sometimes its good to visualize these things if it helps you have a deeper connection to the world you’ve found yourself in.

Plus, idk how you can make a character and not have a bit of yourself in them. I feel like you have to have something to connect you to the person you’re making, otherwise you might be completely detached from them and their story. What happens to them is happening to you, and how would you know how to react as them in the fantasy world if you’re nothing like them in real life? Even if you’re nothing like them, if you’re a small coward like me and you make this brave charismatic warrior paladin, you’re living vicariously through them and doing what you wouldn’t normally do through sheer curiosity if nothing else, and that curiosity is just as much a part of you as anything else.

So in conclusion, no. Self inserts aren’t a bad thing. If it helps you form a deeper connection with the world, go for it and don’t listen to what anyone else says because odds are their character is a self insert too.

And that’s

Thank you @katajanokka very much for the suggestion, here is my take on Mirri Elendis :). I’ve not had the opportunity to play Elder Scrolls, so I’ve had to go off a few references and took some liberties with the outfit and background.

As I still can’t draw backgrounds () I’ve used a photo from Unsplash as a base for the backdrop and added my touches to the rest of the scene. But I will continue to practice and one day I will manage to draw both characters and full backgrounds! :)
