Comics are complicated, and their romances are perhaps even more so.
While famous comic couples like Mr. Fantastic & The Invisible Woman have become integral to their superhero origins, Avenger all-stars like Captain America have only recently become recognized for their wooing ways.
Peggy Carter, played by Hayley Atwell, was first introduced to audiences as Captain America’s love interest for CA: The First Avenger. However, after multiple film cameos and a standalone TV series under her heels, Peggy has become a bonafide heroine amongst Marvel’s stacked roster of superheroes.
And, unsurprisingly, she’s none too happy about Captain America’s latest love interest, Sharon Carter (Emily VanCamp). Oh, let’s not also forget that Sharon is Peggy’s GREAT-NIECE!

In a recent article by IGN, Hayley Atwell was quoted saying what many fans were already thinking by confirming her belief that Peggy would not approve of the budding fling:
“Well, first of all she’d be turning over in her grave. She’d be like “no.” And she’d inject herself with the blue serum and become a super villain. She’d break out of her coffin and ground [Sharon]. She’d ground her. Then she’d kick Steve’s ass as well.I just feel that, you know–I wouldn’t want to date my great aunt’s guy. It just feels like it crosses an incestuous boundary. And Peggy just died. That’s even more disrespectful, right? It’s like, “don’t touch that.” You can’t tap that!
It seems whether Peggy is alive or not, she’s still calling some shots when it comes to Sharon’s love-life. While Sharon’s relationship with Captain America is more thoroughly explored in the comics (as all things are!), fans of Marvel’s films were left bewildered by the sudden romance between the two characters in CA: Civil War.
Though the MCU has hosted several complimentary couples (Tony x Pepper 4eva), the UST felt deflated between Sharon and Captain America. And, if Peggy has anything to say, the relationship may never get her seal of approval.
The fact that the Falcon & Winter Soldier showrunners want Emily Van Camp as Sharon Carter back AND hired a female director for all 6 eps means this show already has taste.
We are not going to:
- Downplay the significance of Sam Wilson being the first Black Captain America in the MCU.
- Complain about Bucky not being the new Cap.
- Make racist comments about a Black woman (cough Sarah Wilson cough) just because Bucky dares show an interest in her.
- Fly into a rage if Bucky and Sharon get together. Go cry into your Stucky fanfic printouts.
- Fly into a rage if Bucky and Sarah get together. Go cry into your Stucky fanfic printouts [2].
- Transfer any dislike of a fictional character onto the actor or actress who plays them.
- Hate on Sharon Carter. If you’ve been in the fandom long enough, this does not need to be expanded upon. Just fucking stop.
Exactly this!
