The dance scene is justas good as the 2005 Pride & Prejudice one. But I particularly love this one because of the detail about Emma’s gloves. She takes them off. Even after she asks Mr Knightley to dance, she doesn’t put them back on. Touching a woman’s bare hand was a very intimate form of physical affection, and generally considered a big no-no at the time (especially public occasions). The gloves are off, their barriers are down…and while it may seem like a sweet dance between two friends, it becomes unbearably intense as it goes on. They get closer, the camera gets closer, and they begin to lose focus of the world around them, even the dance itself. And I just lovethe glorious close-up of their hands touching, like they don’t want to let go just yet. The skin-to-skin contact is everything. Thank-you, Autumn de Wilde!

Me:

Firstly, Emma is supposed to be unlikable. Jane Austen intentionally wrote her to be unlikable. And it’s not a prerequisite for any kind of fiction or film to have a likeable female lead.

And for your information MonaLISA,Johnny Flynn is the perfect age for Mr Knightely, he’s thirty-seven, and it’s not his fault he’s so damn youthful!

I don’t know what kind of drugs they put into this movie but it IS the female gaze I don’t even know how to explain it. It’s the yearning???? The hand holding?????? The handsome men making open displays of emotion?????? Bickering friends to lovers????? Men crying on screen due to embarassment and rejection and heartache instead of some acceptably “manly” reason??????? Women’s desire for men not being demonised or viewed as icky????????? The friendship and solidarity between women???????? THE COSTUME DESIGN???????????????

If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more.

i watched emma and it was such a beautiful movie

“emma woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition, seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence; and had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her.”
