Day 3: Trier and Heidelberg, Germany

For Day 3, we headed out of our AirBnB in Hinzenburg and headed about 20 minutes north to the city of Trier. Trier was founded in the 4th century B.C. and was conquered by the Romans in the 1st century, which makes sense given some of the city’s Roman architecture. Take for instance the Porta Nigra, the Roman city gate that was built in the 2nd century.

My family and I walked around the city core and took in the sights, including several churches like the  Liebfrauenkirche, a gothic cathedral built in the 13th century.

On our way out of town, we stopped at a Roman bridge on the city’s outskirts. To stock up on some more snacks for our road tripping, we detoured over to the Lidl which was in the area. We had parked our car in a parking lot to see the Roman bridge, and we could see Lidl in the distance, so my dad and I figured we could walk to Lidl. My brother and mom decided to meet us over at the store and drove there instead. Well, pops and I went down the road and found out a railroad track prevented us from crossing to get to the other side to where Lidl was located. So, what we thought would be a quick jog over to Lidl took about half an hour… haha. Eventually, we made our way to the store, got some snacks, and headed eastward to the city of Heidelberg.

Driving into Heidelberg, I knew this was going to be a really special place. We left our car in a parking deck and just started strolling (per usual). We made our way to the Neckar River waterfront area. There were so many shops and restaurants on one side of the river. On the other side, it was more residential, with colorful homes built into the hillside. It was such a beautiful, cool day with sun and clouds. People were out strolling and biking, and people were even kayaking and rowing in the waters.

We decided to grab some dinner in town and went to a restaurant called Vetter’s Alt Heidelberger Brauhaus, where we had a variety of delicious German food, including schnitzel, goulash, and German bratwurst of course! We also got a flight of beers, which featured four delicious beers. The waiter forgot to bring out our salad, so when we told him at the end of our meal, he apologized and brought back some vodka shots for us. Cheers to that! My brother and I took those, obviously. I’m sure my parents were like, “Man, how does Minh drink alcohol like that?” College, mom and dad. College prepared me for this :)

After dinner, we hopped out onto the Old Bridge over the Neckar River and enjoyed the views as the sun began to set. It was incredibly picturesque and one of my favorite places of the entire trip. While my brother stood on the banks of the river to take shots of the city skyline at sunset, my parents made our way back into town towards our car. Some miscommunication occurred, and it took my brother about an hour to finally get to us and the car. Long story, but we’ll just forget about that for now and enjoy the pretty pictures from Heidelberg. I’m obviously not doing this city justice. There’s so much more to describe, but I’ll let the pictures do the talking.
