Frigg(Friia) was the Queen of Asgard, wife of Odin(God of Wisdom) and the goddess of beauty, love and marriage in Norse mythology. Even though her main role was guardian of marriage, Frigg did not live with Odin. Instead, she made her home in a place called Fensalir and was attended by several maids. She had a reputation of knowing every person’s destiny, but never unveiling it. The English word ‘Friday’is derived from her name.

Bast(or ‘Bastet’) was one of the most popular goddesses in Egyptian mythology, and generally thought of more as a cat goddess. She even personified the playfulness, grace, affection, and cunning of a cat, as well as the fierce power of a lioness. To Bast cats were sacred, and to harm one was considered to be a personal crime against her and be very unlucky. Her priests kept sacred cats in her temple, which were considered to be incarnations of the goddess. When they died they were mummified so they could be presented to the goddess as an offering and her name being loosely translated to as “Devouring Lady.”

Eos(Éōs meaning “dawn”) was a Titaness and the goddess of the dawn, who rose each morning from her home at the edge of the Oceanus in Greek mythology. She had a brother and a sister, Helios (God of the Sun), and Selene (Goddess of the Moon) and was almost always described with rosy fingers as she opened the gates of heaven for the sun to rise. In Homer, her saffron-coloured robe was embroidered or woven with flowers rosy-fingered and with golden arms, crowned with a tiara or diadem and with the large white-feathered wings of a bird.

Mazu(媽祖) was the goddess of the sea and patron goddess of sailors, fishermen, and traveler’s in Chinese mythology. She was born on the 23rd of March 906 to a poor family of fisherman. According to legend she did not cry, or shed a tear when she was born and never gained the ability to talk. So she was named Lin Moniang (Mò Niáng)meaning‘silent girl’ or silent young female.’ Mazu also had the mysterious ability to predict the weather and would often warn others not to make journeys to the sea. She was even believed to be a strong swimmer and would often rescue people from the sea even in the harshest weather. There are at least two versions of her death. One legend tells that Mazu went out into the sea during a storm to try to find her lost father. Hours passed but still she could not find her father and later died of exhaustion. Another legend tells that Mazu climbed a mountain alone and flew into the heavens and became a goddess. In art, she is often depicted wearing bright red robes laced with shining jewels that help her be more easily seen by traveler’s at sea. Mazu is now generally regarded by her believers as a powerful and benevolent ‘Queen of Heaven.’

Demeter (Δημήτηρ) was the goddess of the harvest, fertility, agriculture, nourishment, growth, nature and the seasons in Greek mythology. Endowed with the power to bring feast and famine to the world, she was said to have the ability to control the seasons and transform the face of nature. In fact her powers were able to influence Zeus(king of the gods) into making Hades(god of the dead) bring her daughter Persephone up from the underworld. She had been playing with some Nymphs, whom Demeter later changed into the Sirens as punishment for not having interfered, and the ground split and she was kidnapped by Hades. Life came to a standstill as the depressed Demeter searched for her lost daughter with the aid of Hecate(goddess of magic). Finally, Zeus could not put up with the dying earth and forced Hades to return Persephone by sending Hermes(messenger of the gods) to retrieve her. But before she was released, Hades tricked her into eating six pomegranate seeds, which forced her to return for six months each year. When Demeter and her daughter were together, the earth flourished with vegetation. But for six months each year, when Persephone returned to the underworld, the earth once again became a barren realm.

She was one of the first beings to emerge from Khaos at the creation of the Universe and was the mother of all Gods, Giants and mortal creatures who sprang from her. Finally, she was angry with Zeus for putting her Titan sons into Tartarus, by producing the tribe of Giants and Typheous to try and destroy and dethrone him, but both failed in their attempts.

Bia(Βιη meaning ‘power, force, might’) was the Titan goddess of force, power and strength of will in Greek mythology. Even though she was not as well known as her siblings Nike(goddess of victory),Kratos(god of power) andZelus (god of rivalry) but when she appeared in myths she remained silent. However, she did play a pivotal role in the story of Prometheus(god of fire). Prometheus was one of the Titans and was often in conflict with Zeus(king of the gods). Eventually, he angered Zeus so much that he decided to punish him for all of eternity. He ordered that Prometheus be chained to a rock in the Caucasus Mountains. Bia and her brother, Kratos, were sent to carry out this task, but Bia was the only one strong enough to actually bind Prometheus to the rock with the unbreakable chains. She and her siblings were also the winged enforcers of Zeus who stood in attendance by his throne, similar to the Valkyries in Norse mythology.

Nanna(orNanna Nepsdóttir) was the goddess of joy and peace as well as being associated with the god Baldr(god of bravery) in Norse mythology. Her story has varied over the years and in some she was the wife of Baldr and together they produced a son named Forseti(god of justice). After Baldr’s death, she died of grief and was placed on his ship with his corpse and the two were set aflame and pushed out to sea. In Niflheim, Baldr and Nanna were united once again. In an attempt to bring him back from the dead, the god Hermóðr(messenger of the gods) rode to Hel(goddess of the death) upon receiving the hope of resurrecting Baldr from the goddess. In another story Nanna was mortal and a love interest to both the demi-god Baldr and the mortal Höðr.Spurred by their mutual attraction towards her, both men repeatedly did battle with one another. However Nanna was only interested in Höðr and in the end wed him, while Baldr wasted away from nightmares about Nanna.

Hemera (Ἡμερα) was the goddess of the day and daughter of Nyx(goddess of the night)andErebos(god of darkness) in Greek mythology. At the conclusion of everyday Nyx and Erebus would emerge from Tartarus and into the ‘Garden of the Hesperides’whereAtlas would hold up the sky. Hand in hand they would stand at the edge of the mountain and pull veils of darkness across the sky. They’d then cover up the sun and send dreams to sleeping mortals. When they finished they would pass by their daughter and her lover Aether(god of light) on the way back to Tartarus. Together the two gods would then bring daytime back to the world. Hemera would chase the darkness from the sky as Aether cast light down on to earth. Later on in a few Greek myths she gets replaced by Eos(goddess of the dawn).
