Among people whose vision of divinity was so polytheistic that the same name of a god or goddess is rarely found more than once, Epona is an exception, for statues and altars to her have been excavated across continental Europe, the center of her worship, and in Britain – more than for any other god or goddess of the Celts. Yet little is known of this goddess except that she was connected with HORSES. Her name means “horse,” from the Gaulish epos, and she was depicted astride a horse (usually a mare), surrounded by horses, or even occasionally lying naked on the back of one. 

Naides (Αρτεμις meaning ‘to flow’) were the nymphs of rivers, streams, lakes, marshes, fountains and springs in Greek mythology. In many myths Naiades were the wives of kings and hold a prominent place in the royal genealogies. Others, such as the beautiful daughters of the River Asopos, were loved by the gods. They often gave their names to towns, cities and islands, and as such were surely regarded as the goddess-protectors of a settlement’s main water supply such as a spring, fountain, or wells. In conjunction with Artemis(goddess of the hunt) they were also nurses of the young and the protectors of girls, overseeing their safe passage into adulthood.

Dryades(Δρυας meaning ‘Of the Tree or Oak’) were the nymphs of the trees, groves, woodlands and mountain forests in Greek mythology. Like all nymphs, were supernaturally long-lived and tied to their homes, but some were a step beyond most nymphs. These were known as The Hamadryads(nymphs of oak & poplar trees) who were an integral part of their trees, such that if the tree died, the nymph associated with it died as well. For these reasons, dryads and the Greek gods punished any mortals who harmed trees without first propitiating the tree-nymphs There were several types of Dryades associated with particular trees The Meliai(nymphs of the ash-tree),The Oreiades(nymphs of the mountain conifer),The Maliades(nymphs of the apple)andThe Daphnaie(nymphs of laurel trees).

The Hesperides (Ἑσπερίδες meaning ‘Daughters of the Evening’) were the goddess nymphs of evening and the golden light of sunsets Greek mythology. It was thought that there were three Hesperides, although some sources name four or seven. They were responsible for taking care of a garden in the western end of the world, near the Atlas mountainsinAfrica. The so called ‘Garden of the Hesperides’ belonged to the goddess Hera(queen of the gods), in which there was a grove of apple trees that bore golden apples. The golden apples were believed to give immortality to anyone who consumed them. Not trusting The Hesperides to guard the apple trees on their own, Hera placed a hundred headed dragon named Ladonin the grove to always keep watch.

The Hyades (Ὑάδες meaning ‘rain-makers’) were nymphs of the five stars of the constellation Hyades and daughters of the heavens-bearing Titan Atlas in Greek mythology. According to the myth, after their brother Hyas was killed by a lion their immense grief brought rain to earth. This eventually led to the nymphs being transformed into a constellation of the same name. The setting of their constellation in November marks the start of the rainy season inGreece and from this the nymphs were named ‘The Rainy Ones.’ The Hyades were also sisters to ThePleiades(nymphs of the mountains) andTheHesperides(nymphs of the evening).

it comes as no surprise that mermaids have found their way beyond our planet. some have done so alongside humans, taking up positions on space stations, while others have taken on the forms of beautiful comets, sailing through the stars. yet more have become black holes themselves, colossal beings of immense power capable of plucking stars from the night sky.

it is not uncommon for a mermaid to be cursed with undeath, and some have even suggested that their highly magical nature leads them towards it. undeath can take many forms, both vicious and benign, but all should be feared. they can often be found haunting ship graveyards, or dangerous waters where unsuspecting sailors may fall victim to the waves.

all mermaids belong to the water, but some also find their place in another element. these mermaids are powerful beings that often go unseen by humans their entire lives, living in spaces surrounded by their favoured elements. many of them act as guardians of vast swathes of water that has been touched, for whatever reason, by another element.

Kitsune(狐, キツネ) are foxes that possess supernatural powers that increase as they get older and wiser in Japanese folklore. According to yōkai folklore, all foxes have the ability to shape-shift into human form especially once they reach the age of one hundred. One of the Japanese fox’s most well-known powers is kitsune-bi(狐火)orfox-fire. This is a red flame produced by a kitsune by either breathing or wagging its tail. They can have as many as nine tails and when a kitsune gains its ninth, its fur becomes whiteorgold. There are thirteen different types of kitsune, each with their own element, including Heaven, Dark, Wind, Spirit, Fire, Earth, River, Ocean, Mountain, Forest, Thunder, Time andSound.

Witches are human beings born with a spiritual energy that runs through everything, which enables them to manifest magical powers. Like mortals, witches can be either goodorevil, but only good witches serve as protectors of the innocent. The origins of witchcraft dates back to the beginning of the Earth itself. Since then, witches have existed for untold centuries, passing down their knowledgeandskills through generations in family lineages. Contrary to popular belief, witches do not receive their powers from demons, nor do they worship the Devil. During the late 17th century in Salem, Massachusetts, men and women were persecuted for practicing witchcraft. Also in Colonial America, many of the Puritans who had settled in the Northeast believed that witches were servants for the Devil. These events became known as the Salem Witch Trials, in which numerous people (witches and mortals) were hanged or otherwise killed.

TheGolden Apples of Idunn only grow in Asgard and can only be picked by the goddess Idunn. The apples are what granted the Asgardians their youth, vigour, and virtual immortality. They grew on a tree in a garden on the east side of ‘Hall of Valhalla’ in Asgard. At point Loki, the trickster god kidnapped the goddess after a dispute with a giant named Thiazi. Without Idunn’s apples, the gods quickly began to age and their hair turned grey. When Loki was found to be the one behind all this, he had to choose between paying with his life or bringing Idunn back home to Asgard again.

Avalon is a legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend. It was the place where Excalibur was forged and kept safe by The Lady of the Lake as well and the last resting place of King Arthur after his final battle. In Arthurian legend, after Arthur fell at Camlann, he was taken by nine sisters (chief of whom was the sorceress Morgan le Fay, to Avalon. There he would rest until he was required to rise and save his people from disaster. The island was described as “the island of apples (‘Insula pomorum’), called fortunate.”

Mermen are legendary aquatic creatures and the male counterparts of mermaids. Just like mermaids they also have the head and torso of a male and tail of a fish. Originally they were celebrated as deities, however mermen slowly slipped back into the legends as just ordinary mythological creatures of the sea, who very rarely showed up on the surface. The reason of that was sometimes because of their shynessand sometimes because their ugliness. A “merboy” is a young merman.

Mjǫllniris the hammer of Thor, the God of Thunder, in Norse Mythology. It was used both as a devastating weapon as well as a divine instrument to provide blessings. The hammer was Thor’s primary weapon. However it was no ordinary hammer; whenever Thor cast it at an enemy, it returned to his hands like a boomerang. The sound of the thunder was perceieved as being the sound of his hammer crashing down on his foes. It should come as no surprise, therefore, that the Old Norse name for his hammer, Mjöllnir, probably meant “Lightning.”

Selkies are mythological beings capable of therianthropy, changing from sealtohuman form by shedding their skin. They mainly exist in the folklore tales of Ireland, Scotland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands. Many tales tell of them coming in groups to the beaches at night and dancing by the light of the moon. It was also believed that if a person could sneak to the shore and steal the their seal skin, the Selkie was then forced to remain with them, unable to return to the sea unless they could get their skin back. Selkies were said to make good wives, but they always carried with them a deep and melancholy longing for the sea.

Valhalla(Valhǫll) is where all men who died with honour in battle go to until Ragnarǫk, the Fate of the Gods in Norse mythology. This golden fortress is Ódin’s hall. Reaching Valhalla was a goal for most Norse warriors and was also called the ‘Viking Heaven.’ When men died in the midst of battle on Earth, the Valkyries would come for them and bring them to Valhalla for the last battle. They would be made immortal and trained against each other for the whole day. At the end of the day, those wounded would be healed and those who fought would part as friends. By night drank they mead and sang to Ódin. They were known as Einherjar.

Mermaids are legendary aquatic creatures with the head and torso of a human female and the tail of a fish. In some folklores they are also known as sea witches. Their powers can range from control over the weather to complete power over the sea,the tides, and the moon. Like witches it is also believed they can grant wishes, heal sickness, lift curses, brew magic potions and can sometimes carry a trident. Mermaids are also associated with perilous events such as floods, storms, shipwrecks, and drownings. In other folk traditions, they can be benevolent or beneficent, bestowing boons or falling in love with humans.
