If eyes are windows into the soul, it makes sense to pay them special attention when you’re applying your daily (or nightly) face. You’re no doubt aware that makeup trends, like fashion trends, aren’t meant for everyone, so how do you make sure you’ve got the best shadow/liner combination for you? The looks that will really make your eyes pop, that will give you that alluring gaze whether you’re at a board meeting or batting your eyelashes over a cocktail glass, are based on your specific eye color and shape. We’ve put together a primer for you to size up your gorgeous eyes (no matter their shape or position) with your color, to get the best possible effect.

The Shape of Things

Deep Set: For deep set eyes, the key is to brighten and open them up to show off their full potential. Make sure you’ve got concealer on hand to cover up not only the circles under your eyes but any other color inconsistencies surrounding your eyes, shadows, green spots, whatever they may be. Choose a light shadow that’s just a bit lighter than your skin color (a touch of iridescence won’t hurt either) and apply it from lid to brow bone, to create an open effect. Don’t forget to apply the lighter shade to the inside corner of your eyes. A liquid highlighter can work to the same effect, just make sure you blend. When it comes to using eyeliner and darker colors, focus on the outside corners, and leave the inside natural looking.

Small: Follow the same brightening tricks for deep set eyes, but don’t hesitate to line your top lid, creating an eye-opening effect. Use a waterproof mascara on the bottom to further open them up. Shimmery shadows reflect light, also creating the appearance of wide eyed beauty. Make sure you use highlighting shadow or liquid highlighter to accentuate and accent your brown bone. Perfectly groomed brows will maximize the space on which to highlight.

Heavy Lidded: You’ve got those bedroom eyes? You’re the envy of many a woman. Make the best of it by getting those brows groomed, to maximize the visible space. Next, focus on the lower lid and lash line. Smudge brown liner for a natural focus that brings focus to the center of your eyes and balances your lids. Curled lashes will create a wider gaze, too, so don’t forget to brush upward and onward with your mascara after you’ve crimped.

Downturned: If you’ve got eyes that turn down at the corners, no worries, you’ve got a built-in vulnerable look that tugs on heartstrings. Make it even better by applying a lighter color shadow from the center of your top eyelid to the inner corner. Then blend in a middle shade over your lids, stopping before it reaches your eyebrows. Use the darkest shade on the outer edges of your eyes. Make sure you’ve got it blended well!

Big Doe Eyes: You’ve already got an advantage in giving a truly arresting stare, beautiful makeup will only enhance it. Groom your brows, but keep a natural-looking thickness. Too thin, and you’ll look off balance. Feel free to apply darker colors to your lids, and highlight your brow bone, you’ll need dark liner around your waterline to really draw attention to your gorgeous irises.

Color Theory

Hazel Eyes: Hazel eyes have perhaps the most versatility with color. These blended irises often have flecks of gold, or blue or green, and are a motley mixup that allows you to play with a lot of color, including eyeliner options. Think about purple, green or gold for a night out. If you’ve got blue in those hazel eyes, consider a soft pink to brighten and accentuate them. Overall, pick out one color in your hazel and accent it with your makeup, as per below.

Blue: Blue, as a cool color, can look positively icy if paired with other cool colors. To add warmth and dimension to your gaze, try warm colors, earth tones and coppery shadows. Forest green, brown, even burnt orange can provide the perfect accent.

Brown: Dark eyes are the kind people simply get lost in. They give the impression of emotional depth and mystery. Nice, if you’ve got ‘em! Really accentuate those dark shades with beautiful neutral colors that don’t distract from your inborn power gaze. If you must use colors, do so sparingly.

Green: Green eyes really pop with plum and burgundy colors. Think of yourself in the purple family. If you’ve got deep brown eyes, go for cooler purples, if you’re eyes are light, cool green, you’ll want to go with darker shades of eggplant and mauve.

Amber: This rare shade looks gorgeous with neutrals, gold and copper metallics, green, purple…just about everything, except for silver and pastel shades. Stick to warm tones on the color wheel and you’ll be sitting and looking pretty.

For women who understand that high prices at the beauty counter can absolutely translate to longer-lasting, more vibrant looks, the words “beauty” and “budget” do not belong in the same sentence. After all, a girl deserves a splurge somewhere in her life and if she can’t afford the newest It-bag, she can afford that new Tom Ford lipstick. Problem is, 10 Tom Ford tubes of lip color are still way less than a Birkin, so we’re tempted to buy each and every color, to the detriment of our wallet.

Is there a way to balance our love for high-end beauty and save a few bucks? Definitely. All you need is a few beauty hacking tips. You may not be at Sephora as often, but don’t worry, they’ll still send you your birthday discount. Here are the top tricks you can use at home to start saving money on your beauty starting…tomorrow. Or tonight, as the case may be.

Multitask Your Products

The most obvious is the lip stain that can double as a cheek stain. Or clear lip gloss you can use on your pucker and then brush on your brows to keep small hairs in place. The fact is, whatever you can dream up to do double duty with is fair game. As long as you’re not eating your beauty products, most are pretty much waiting to be multitasked and are safe to apply to each area of your face and hair.

Skip Your Flowery Shaving Cream

Did you know you’re paying more for your girly shaving cream than men pay for theirs? Even though each promises a closer shave and softer skin? In fact, most men’s products are cheaper, from deodorant to disposable razors. So don’t be afraid to cross the gender aisle when you’re shopping for basic human hygiene products. Another tip? Hair conditioner can double as shaving cream in the shower. Dollar store, here you come.

Good to the Last Drop (and Then Some)

Americans have a bad habit of throwing away products that are only half used. Sometimes it’s as simple as turning the conditioner bottle upside down before your next shower. Or using a Q-tip to get out the last bits of concealer from the pot. For those last powdery bits of shadow, mix with a drop of oil and you’ll have liquid lid color.

Go for the Palette

Eyeshadow palettes are not just a holiday gift gimmick. They really do offer more value than buying individual or dual color compacts. Your best bet is to go with a neutral palette that offers basic browns, blacks and creams. They can be mixed and matched for day and night, and the lightest colors can be used as highlighters. Now that’s multitasking.

Skip the Salon Scrubs and Facials

Yes it feels good to be pampered, but it’s also expensive. And you can get the same results at home, really. Use natural sugar in your bathtub along with olive oil or coconut oil for exfoliating, softening results. A DIY strawberry mask will fight breakouts as it contains natural salicylic acid. There are no less than 100 (well, probably not less than 1000) natural-ingredient scrubs and facials you can find with a Google search that will take the place of spendy treatments.

Stop Abusing and Overusing

You’re using too much of your products at one time, most likely. Try cutting back on the amount of conditioner, shampoo, hairspray and lotion you use. See if you’re taking fewer trips to replace them. Not sure how much to use? Labels usually offer a suggestion. The standard size is a quarter-sized dollop.

Give Yourself an Indulgence Limit

For us beauty addicts, we’ve got to wean ourselves off slowly. Just like a dieter will achieve more by allowing a roll every so often at dinner, you’ll control your spending over the long haul better if you give yourself a reasonable limit for your indulgences. Whether it’s a monthly dollar amount or a monthly number of products, set it, don’t go over it.

How to Even Out Your Eyelids Without Surgery

If you’ve ever seen celebrities without makeup look unrecognizable, then you know how transformative certain techniques can be. These easy makeup tricks can take 10 pounds off your look, instantly — they’re optical illusions!

1. When it comes to makeup, dark shades recede, while light colors bring features forward. To use this idea to your advantage, you’ll need a contour color or matte bronzer one or two shades deeper than your skin tone and a luminous highlighter that’s a bit lighter than your complexion. You can use cream or powder textures, or a combination of the two. No matter which formula you choose, be sure to use a makeup brush to blend — streaky contour makeup is a major don’t.

2. Create the illusion of thinner cheeks by applying your contour shade in a diagonal line from the center of your cheek to the ear. Make a slight “fish face” while you do this to figure out the perfect placement, and don’t forget to blend. The higher you place your contour shade, the sharper your cheekbones will look. Swipe highlighter across the tops of the cheekbones to really bring out the contour.

3. Fake a thinner nose: swipe a contour powder down the sides of the bridge of your nose (stop before you get to the nostrils). Blend highlighter down the bridge of your nose in a vertical line.

4. To never have a double chin in photos again, apply bronzer along your jawline to define the area. Blend the shade to create a seamless contour.

5. Play up your eyes, and leave your lips natural with a tinted balm or gloss. Full lips can emphasize roundness on the face, but eyes made to look large with makeup will make the rest of the face appear smaller in comparison.

6. Choose the right eyebrow shape. A higher, more pronounced arch helps balance out a round face by vertically stretching its appearance.

7. Highlight the center of your face. Blend highlighter between your brows, on the bridge of the nose, on the Cupid’s bow above your upper lip and in the center of your chin. This technique will help bring these features forward to downplay the width of your face.

8. Don’t forget your forehead! Blend your contour shade into the temples and around the hairline to emphasize the angles of your bone structure.

Today, we celebrate Civil War. No, not that civil war. Of course we are talking about Captain America: Civil War, the latest installment from the Marvel universe. Weirdly a lot of people are surprised to hear how long I’ve loved the comic world of Marvel and are even more surprised to learn how much. It’s a weird stigma that its a genre just for the boys and because I am a fashion loving lady I…
