We’re halfway through this show and Sam is still getting treated like this. Still the emotional punching bag for Bucky’s white ass while he doesn’t get to express his own feelings and pain. Still the Strong Black Man™️ that’s checking on everyone but has no one check on him. It’s maddening. I’ll be very fucking honest, I expected à lot more for his character and was excited as fuck to learn a black man was penning this but I’ll be lying if I said it’s doing such a great job exploring Sam Wilson properly.
Yes we’re getting some development which is amazing and the overall story is also great. I love the inclusion of Sam’s family and his complex relationship with his sister, knowing more about Isaiah Bradley etc. But when it comes to what Mr Spellman is doing with Sam, I don’t like it.
All these things keep happening to Sam and they never give him time to react to them. Halfway through and we haven’t heard him express his feelings on anything while Bucky continues to take his frustrations out on Sam and just generally be a dick to him. I just hope they get into it in episode 4. That man shouldn’t be okay. It makes no sense. He’s been through a lot and yet his mental health isn’t even an issue. No acknowledgement of his ptsd, of the shit that comes with being racially profiled. It makes no sense that’s he’s so calm about everything. Like yeah, Black people have to be calm in white spaces but this is seriously overdoing it cos Bucky isn’t white spaces. Bucky is someone who’s been needling him about the shield since episode 1. There’s no reason why Sam can’t express his feelings to him.
And if they’re planning to have him explode in one quick scene in episode 5 or 6, well, a quick scene were he finally snaps at Bucky over the shield won’t cut it either.
Agreed, and twice now when it seems like he was going to express his feelings further he gets cut off. Next episode he should tell Bucky off and let it all out and just leave and go home. He needs some rest and to recharge and process.
The show is clearly prioritizing Bucky’s emotional well being and feelings over Sam’s. And if it’s gone on for half the show, I don’t see it turning around. I mean I hope it does but idk that it would. I just hope they at least properly resolve the issue between him and Sarah. Let me at least have that.
Not them putting out it was Steve’s notebook knowing full well this bitches will go crazy over that and throw away every other scene and still totally ignore giving Sam’s mental health a second like I-

I agree with all the above points. I feel like a lot of the fandom does not care for Sam as they do Bucky so they overlook a lot of the mistreatment. If the roles were reversed, there would be a massive outcry which is sad. I don’t want to assume that members of this fandom are racist, but rather they don’t understand white privilege or white favoritism. The ones that really don’t are the people that you’ll see getting pissed off that Steve gave Sam the shield over Bucky or questioning why we need a Black Captain America. With all that being said, I am glad that they are focusing on race in this show because it’s so important and mimics what’s happening in real life. However, I just wish more thought was put into Sam’s overall characterization and that the show wasn’t so focused on Bucky and his emotional well-being over that of a Black man’s.

Right. Before Steve even opened his mouth, Sam opposed the accords. He was literally the first character to oppose. But now it’s he backed Steve.
this bothered me so much, for the reasons above and also because everyone was oh so quick to deservedly call john walker on considering sam a sidekick, but now that it’s bucky who’s quite literally relegating sam to that same role, a lot of the same people are letting that go straight over their heads.

bucky’s actively trying to better himself and make a meaningful different, tony’s attempts to redeem himself were impulsive and only managed to hurt more people
