Excerpt:
“It is not a question of what is owed.” Nines’ voice is hard as flint, his eyes piercing. “Those you love will wither and die while you remain here, changing so slowly it won’t be noticeable to the naked eye, a life so long it’ll feel like aeons. Your name will be lost to time, erased by it and by the tragedies that befall humans. Every sight you think you know apart from the stars above us will alter with wear, with the elements that wage an endless war upon all. Can you live with all this? The strife that follows peace like a shadow.”

The air, heavy with words spoken, is hard to draw into his lungs. It brings him no relief as the atmosphere descends into ruin, the opposite of their earlier banter, oppressive in the way it inhibits breathing. The circle on Nines’ temple bleeds black, the veins around his eyes stealing the same colour, porcelain skin laden with dark cracks. A twisted mirror of how he’d looked the first time they’d met where sorrow takes the place of rage. Yet the sight fills him not with fear but with determination.
