J’ai perdu mon corps is a long-length animated movie which received the highest distinction (Cristal du long métrage) at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in 2019. It tells the story of a disembodied hand in search of its body, young Naoufel. The storytelling is split in two : the hand’s quest and Naoufel’s life as he falls in love with Gabrielle and how it changes his life. Scenery and art style are both urban and poetic, showcasing the city of Paris, its subway lines and its apartment buildings.

Hidden Animation ~ Louise en hiver, dir. Jean-François Laguionie (2016)

Louise en hiver tells the story of an old lady who is left alone in a small city by the sea at the end of the summer. Tempests start to rise and Louise has to fight against a capricious nature and her own solitude. The movie is an ode to old age and was created combining traditional 2D animation and CGI to help produce the feeling of an animated painting.

La Jeune fille sans mains is loosely based on the brothers Grimm’s tale in which a poor miller is tempted by the devil and agrees to sell his daughter to him in exchange for gold. In her attempt to escape, her father manages to cut off her hands and give them to the devil. The story is then centered around the daughter and her survival despite her infirmity.

The movie has been praised for its visual rendition and unique art style emphasized by the use of clean sketch lines and vibrant colours. The movie was awarded at the Annecy festival.

Hidden Animation ~ L'Illusionniste, Sylvain Chomet (2010)

L’Illusionniste is based on a scenario written in 1956 by Jacques Tati, a French mime, actor and director. The script was conceived as a personal letter to his eldest daughter with whom he had a very difficult relationship. Tati died before he could make the movie and Sylvain Chomet, who directed Oscar-nominated animated movie The Triplets of Belleville, kept Tati’s original intention by staging a relationship between a struggling illusionist and a girl who is convinced he is a real magician.

There’s a resemblance!

Both are extremely rich showmen (V.A. with circuses, Agreste with fashion).

Both have walking sticks (though Agreste only has his when he’s in his villain costume).

image
image

Both have headquarters in towers with huge, round windows overlooking a big city (New York for V.A., Paris for Agreste).

image
image

Both want to have ultimate power (V.A. to dominate the world of entertainment, Agreste to dominate, well, the world).

Headcanon:

Colette Marchant became pregnant by V.A. while they were still in Paris.  He didn’t want a child, and convinced her that, in order to become The Queen of the Heavens, she couldn’t raise their son.  Colette reluctantly left her son in the care of her mother and aunts and left for New York.

She secretly kept in touch with the boy and made sure he had the finest education.  When V.A. died Colette revealed that the young man was his only living biological relative.  He inherited the wealth Vandevere had managed to rebuild after Dreamland burned.

He and his children lived happy lives.  But his grandson X 3 grew up in Paris, and had inherited his grandfather X 3’s personality.  Which included gaining fame, fortune and power at any cost.  So he turned into a super villain.

Bonus coincidence:  Gabriel Agreste’s son is named Adrian (spelled Adrien).

I only learned about Miraculous Ladybug & Cat Noir very recently.  I love the theme song (this one is in the original French with English CC).  The intro has a brief glimpse of Agreste in his tower room.

The U.S. intro:

The game has changed.I’m not sure where I was going with this image or what I wanted to achieve with

The game has changed.

I’m not sure where I was going with this image or what I wanted to achieve with this Character. All I know is, is that Miraculous Ladybug has been one of those random characters that keeps popping into my head because of other artist images of her. So despite knowing little to nothing about her series, its seemingly ludicrous plot and slightly inappropriate outfit designs. Nonetheless here is Ladybug, amid a city-wide disaster, doing what she can to overcome the overwhelming odds of rescuing Paris.
