Here, we see him asking Mouri to hold his legs. (In another translation I read, he asked him to hold down his feet.) Why specifically legs, especially when Mouri is standing in front of Banba, not behind? Why not just simply, “Mouri-san, please hold him down!” or “hold him back”?

Because he was trying to give Mouri a hint. He was trying to get Mouri to circle around behind Banba, and thereby draw Mouri’s attention to the cake on Banba’s soles.

(However, this line was deleted in the anime, which is unfortunate, because it made it less clear that Amuro had possessed all the pieces of evidence far before Conan had, and definitely had already come to the correct conclusion at this point too.)

In fact, seeing how he’s learned a lot in the previous chapter about Banba’s tendencies to act in aggression without thinking, Amuro may even have been purposefully trying to goad Banba into taking a swing at him, and thereby making him sprawl down and revealing the bottom of his shoes.

Just before this page, we see Megure telling Banba that the DNA under the fallen acrylic nail is an approximate match for Banba.

Amuro’s done all the research while employed by Hatsune, regarding her and Banba’s history. At this point, he already has all the pieces of evidence, bar the cake stain that would prove Banba’s innocence. With his deduction capabilities, he 100% has already thought of the possibility that they’re twins (if not already run a DNA test himself). So here, goading Banba into falling over is also a way for Amuro himself to check whether that skin under the nail is Banba’s (no cake under shoe) or Hatsune herself’s (cake still under shoe).

If this is true, then this is one of, if not the first time we see Amuro’s detective skills at work, and we see the way he instantly gathers evidence and comes to a conclusion, without anyone even noticing he’s doing so.

And this also marks the first instance where we see Amuro/Furuya’s manipulative personality come into play. He’d rather provoke this man into aggression than just ask to see his shoe. He’d rather stay silent on exonerating evidence and further his own goals, than speak up and save an innocent man from possible conviction. From things little to big, Furuya has shown that he’s far more likely to exploit or manipulate someone into doing something, than simply and straightforwardly asking. And he also does it so adeptly, that often, few people realize just what he was aiming for.

I definitely agree with this but I feel that the main reason Rei couldn’t ask to just see the shoes is because he had to play dumb not just as a part of his cover but because he probably wanted to test Mouri’s deductive abilities.

During this case Rei knows 2 things about Kogoro. First is that he was possibly involved in the Kir shenanigans because of the tracker conan left on her shoe. Second is the 13 red shirt case where kogoro kept messing up till Rei sent him his deduction/conan put him to sleep. Sleeping Kogoro had also deduced a bit more about the incident because conan had access to a computer when Rei didn’t.

At this point Rei must be wondering if Kogoro is a genuinely great detective who plays dumb or if he really is dumb and if so who’s behind all his cases. (I wonder if he suspected the FBI since Akai showed up at the time the BO were trying to gun Kogoro down). I think that by giving Mouri a hint he’s trying to see if he is able to actually figure the case out.

I think that the reason Rei wanted to become Mouri’s “apprentice” after this case is because Mouri’s conduct in this whole case is strange as hell. First he’s spouting absolute nonsense with complete confidence and he’s not paying attention to the clues even when Rei hints at them. Then all of the sudden the sleeping Kogoro show is on and Mouri has figured every last detail out with a completely different conclusion than the previous.

Like I honestly think that Rei must have been utterly confused by the end of this.

I honestly never understood that like why? sure mary is sus af but she didn’t even fit any of the descriptions of Rum nor does it make sense for the orgs number 2 to be holed up in a hotel room with a high school girl like wtf conan?

I just realized that pretty much all Akai family members have been red herrings at one point or another. Cone suspected Akai of being in the BO, Sera was a Bourbon suspect, Akai as Subaru was again a red herring for Bourbon, Mary with Rum and if Kuroda is Tsutomu…

The Akais be like “is anyone gonna mislead the audience?” and not wait for an answer.
