“It’s all mental” that’s what @wilddirt Co-Founder @dennisfiore always says as swimming in what some may consider frigid waters. Growing up in Michigan it is a normal occurrence to swim in the Great Lakes with waters below 70°F. Nothing like causally swimming in water so chilly your lips turn blue and you shiver to stay warm. Some might cal” that hypothermia. In Michigan we call that swimming in July. The same waters can be so blue you could mistake them for the Tropics. Which is why inexperienced people can get into trouble. Now with books like What Doesn’t Kill Us by @sgcarney and Wim Hoff’s teachings being more prevalent more people know what Dennis always has… being cold is all mental. With some effort mind can overcome matter.

Today is World Ocean Day!

Our planet is an ocean planet: Earth Is Blue. The National Marine Sanctuary System protects some of the most iconic underwater places throughout the United States, but we can’t do it without you. No matter where you are, the ocean and Great Lakes are in your hands. From the air we breathe, climate regulation, providing food, and economic benefits, the ocean supports life on our planet.

Tell us what your favorite thing about the ocean is!

The R/V Storm research vessel floats above a sinkhole in Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary

Sinkholes are like a time capsule, taking us back to how Earth may have appeared approximately 2.5 billion years ago, at the beginning of the Proterozoic Eon.

Since the sinkholes were discovered in 2002, scientists from around the world have collaborated with Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary to research this time capsule.

In honor of Native American Heritage month, we’re highlighting our new acquisition, The Story

In honor of Native American Heritage month, we’re highlighting our new acquisition, The Story of Wisconsin Indians, created by Ludwig Cinatl, Jr. and featured in the Sunday, December 3, 1967 edition of The Milwaukee Journal.

The map shows Wisconsin place names in their original, pre-colonial language, historical information about different tribes, and has historical markers as early as the 100 BC depicting the beginning of the effigy mound culture. The bulk of the map depicts events between 1634 and the mid-1800s.

The map also includes 4 ancillary maps entitled: “Principal Indian Cessions 1829-1848” and “Location of Indian Tribes 1634,” “Location of Indian Tribes 1634-1750” and “Location of Indian Tribes 1750-1825.”
