natgeo  Photo by @cristinamittermeier // Can you guess what is wrong with this penguin? We spent a month in Antarctica on assignment for @natgeo and it was not until the second week that I realized we had not seen snow once. Every day, however, we experienced several hours of incessant rain. As temperatures warm in Antarctica, the weather regime is changing from snow to rain. In the past, the penguin colony would be covered in snow but now, it is a large, muddy mess. Baby penguins are covered in fluffy down and they can easily preen themselves when it snows. When they get muddy and wet, their down loses its insulation ability and as temperatures drop at night, they become hypothermic and die.
As the debate on weather or not to protect the Antarctic Peninsula starts to play out, I hope that the members of the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), who will be voting on this issue are inspired to protect it for all humanity.

Complicit®
Brent Pruitt, 2021

Each member within society is responsible for the perpetuation of institutional oppression.

To what extent do we, as an individual, or collective, acknowledge our participation? How do we hold ourselves, and each other, accountable?

Complicit® is a declaration of recrimination and confession.

Today is World Ocean Day!

Our planet is an ocean planet: Earth Is Blue. The National Marine Sanctuary System protects some of the most iconic underwater places throughout the United States, but we can’t do it without you. No matter where you are, the ocean and Great Lakes are in your hands. From the air we breathe, climate regulation, providing food, and economic benefits, the ocean supports life on our planet.

Tell us what your favorite thing about the ocean is!

Good morning to everyone who is going to troll an oil company today

The goal of bullying Big Oil companies over their climate tweets isn’t just to educate people about corporate hypocrisy. It’s to unite activists around the goal of taking away their social license to operate.

Oil majors have admitted to investors that their business would be in deep trouble without broad public support. They’ve also admitted the biggest threat to maintaining social license is public anger over climate change.

Oil companies could remedy this threat by winding down their fossil fuel operations, and investing heavily in renewable energy. But for the most part, they’ve chosen to combat public anger over climate change by investing in strategic communication. This consistent choice of empty climate words over meaningful climate action is why several Shell executives quit the company this week—and it’s why Heglar says social media call-outs are increasingly powerful.

I do not post pinyin and meaning of words, everything is on the website (I suggest to sing up for it, it’s for free!)

I… I spend a lot of time talking to my husband about climate change.

Politics being what it is, I feel like societal change is where I can find hope.  And hey, if we all start making choices based on preparing for an oil-free world, we can actually make oil obsolete!

Ever wondered why your flights always seem to be delayed? Research has just shown that one reason behind the delays is climate change. The change in climate is leading to constant changes in the summer jet stream, according to Michael Mann, director of the Penn State Earth System Science Center.

Read more about Mann’s research at Bloomberg.

Context: In 1977, Exxon researchers gave executives a definitive report that burning fossil fuels was causing climate change. Exxon went on to spend at least $30 million funding public skepticism about climate change and lobbying against federal action.

More than half of the world’s industrial carbon emissions have been produced since 1977. ExxonMobil’s 2018 earnings were $20.8 billion.
