This is a translation of an event occuring in Chapter 6 of Nicol’s route.

All of the summaries / translations I have written so far are available in the Hamefura Pirates Summary Index.

Context: After the ship tilted during a storm, Katarina slips and falls into the ocean.

————————————————————————-

As my skirt absorbed water, I was sinking heavily.

I felt like I heard someone’s voice far away, but my consciousness wasn’t clear, maybe because of the shock after falling into water.

I am suffocating. I can’t breathe. I can’t move my body very well.

What should I do? I will be doomed at this rate.

…Someone… Please help me…

Nicol: …Katarina!

image

At that time, something suddenly touched my lips, and then I realized that the air that I so needed was filling my body.

The moment someone held me, my fall gently stopped.

I was supposed to be in the water, but for some reason I felt the wind blowing.

Inside this curious sensation where I couldn’t tell whether I was inside water or high winds, someone was holding me tightly.

Katarina: (Who are…)

I couldn’t voice this question into words. My consciousness suddenly turned distant, and I ended up not being able to tell who it was.

Far away, I felt like I could hear someone’s sobbing voice.

???: …

Katarina: (…What is this? The sound of waves…?)

I extended my hand towards the sad-sounding sobbing voice.

But someone’s hand held me to their chest as if to tell me “Don’t go”.

In that cold icy world, this touch alone felt warm, gentle and comfortable.

Each time it feels like I would drift away or be thrown out somewhere, this hand would strongly hold on to me.

Inside this soundless unreal darkness, I was drifting far far away.

Chapter 6: A Suspicious Presence (Part 1)

Katarina has fallen into the ocean. She can’t breathe and feels like she might die at this rate. After hearing someone calling her name, she then feels someone holding her. For some reason she can feel the wind blowing and can somehow breathe.

image

Katarina slowly loses consciousness and can’t see the face of her savior. While she is out of it, she can hear a woman’s voice sobbing in her mind. She can also feel someone desperately holding on to her while she is washed by the waves.

(The translation of this scene is available here)

When she comes to, her body feels heavy and someone is giving her light slaps on the cheeks while calling her name. Katarina wakes up and sees Nicol by her side. They are on a beach.

Katarina remembers that she fell into the ocean and is confused about how they got there. Nicol explains that he has dived after her after she fell off the ship. However, since the current was too strong, he couldn’t get them back on the ship and so they ended up drifting here. Katarina is shocked that Nicol jumped after her and apologizes to him. But Nicol is just glad that they are both safe since the sea was raging at the time. With this, Katarina realizes that she has just avoided death.

Nicol adds that he has been using his magic all along to ensure that she could breathe. He asks her if she is feeling okay. After Katarina replies that she is completely fine, Nicol feels deeply relieved. Katarina notices that Nicol is looking weary, probably because he has been using his magic continuously to save her. And he also fought Frederic just before. Katarina wishes she could give Nicol some food to help him recover, but her pockets are empty.

Katarina asks Nicol where they are. Since the fog is out, Nicol thinks they are probably on an island in the Blank Area.

When he holds out his hand towards her, Katarina realizes that Nicol is not avoiding her anymore. Nicol is confused to see Katarina smiling, so she explains to him that she is happy that he is back to his usual self. Nicol gasps in realization and looks away. It seems like Nicol simply forgot he was avoiding her.

—————————————————–

Katarina: Umm, Lord Nicol. Could it be that I did something to you?

Nicol: …! Well…

Katarina: If I did something that hurt your feelings, then I want to apologize. So could you tell me without restraint?

Nicol: That’s not it!

His voice was louder than usual.

Seeing me wide-eyed, Nicol came to his senses.

He dropped his gaze like he regretted raising his voice.

Nicol: …I am sorry for raising my voice. In any case… That’s not it. It isn’t your fault, Katarina.

Katarina: (But why are you avoiding me then…?)

—————————————————–

Nicol remains silent. A cold breeze blows, which makes their wet bodies shiver. As a result, Katarina ends up making continuous loud sneezes. Nicol is completely dumbfounded. Katarina wonders if it is because she didn’t sneeze in a ladylike way and plans on sneezing “AAATCHAH desu wa” next time. Nicol gives her a soft smile and tells her they should get going so that they can dry their clothes fast.

They must find shelter and food. But there doesn’t seem to be houses around, so Nicol wonders if they are on an uninhabited island.

Nicol and Katarina set off to explore the island. They enter the forest. While they walk, Nicol uses his magic to dry their clothes little by little. He can’t dry them in one go since the wind is chilly.

Katarina tries to search for food on the way, but can’t find any. She thinks of climbing a tree to search for food from above. When she raises her head, she sees a mansion at the other side of the fog, and notifies Nicol. Feeling relieved that this island is inhabited after all, Nicol and Katarina both rush to the mansion.

The mansion looks old and yet sturdy, but its western design reminds Katarina of a haunted house. There doesn’t seem to be any other building on the island. Hoping there would be people inside, Katarina knocks on the door of the mansion but there is no response. Peering at the windows, there doesn’t seem to be anyone either.

Katarina is disappointed that there is no one after all. She looks more closely towards one of the windows on the second floor and sees the curtains swaying a little. When she stares at it more closely, she sees a swaying human-like form with amber eyes.

The amber eyes remind Katarina of her dream. She is terrified over the possibility that this silhouette might be a ghost. Nicol worriedly asks her what’s wrong. Katarina tells him she saw the silhouette of a person on the window of the second floor. But when they look again, there is no one. Katarina is confused since she is sure she saw something.

For the time being, Nicol suggests they enter the mansion since it isn’t locked. After all, they will catch a cold if they don’t dry themselves fast. Katarina reminds him that there may be a ghost in the mansion, but Nicol doesn’t seem to believe in them. With this, Katarina realizes that unlike Sophia, Nicol is actually a realist. She also remembers how FL!Nicol said in her dream that he didn’t believe in supernatural phenomenons. FL!Nicol also said the fog was the result of a curse. Katarina shivers at the thought. The mansion does feel ominous, but Katarina is cold and wants to warm up, so she gives in and decides to enter the mansion.

After entering the mansion, Nicol and Katarina are shocked to see that the inside is clean and pretty. From the outside, the mansion looked old and damaged. Katarina feels relieved since ghosts might not come out after all. Nicol is puzzled since it seems too unnatural. In any case, they set off to find a place where they can rest.

Nicol and Katarina start exploring the inside of the mansion. It feels ominous since there is no one and they can only hear the sound of their footsteps. It reminds Katarina of a haunted house and she can’t help feeling scared. Without thinking, she ends up grabbing Nicol’s clothes.

image

Nicol is taken aback. Then Katarina remembers that Nicol wanted to avoid physical contact with her, so she sadly pulls her hand back. At that moment, Nicol seizes her hand and tells her he doesn’t mind it if she feels more at ease this way. He also apologizes to her: he doesn’t believe in ghosts so he ended up not being considerate of her feelings. Feeling Nicol’s kindness, Katarina smiles and grabs his sleeve again. Nicol looks away but Katarina could faintly hear him say “Sorry”.

In the next room, Nicol and Katarina find a towel lying on a desk. The towel is dry and soft, and it seems like it has been washed, so someone may be living there after all. Katarina is confused since they haven’t seen anyone. Nicol guesses that everyone must be out at the moment. Katarina can’t help feeling it is weird: on one hand, the mansion looks cold and deserted - which hints at no one living there - but on the other hand, there is a clean and soft towel lying around - which hints at people living there.

While Katarina is trying to process the contradiction, Nicol envelops her head with the towel and then shyly but roughly dries her hair. Despite his expressionless face, Katarina can see worry in his eyes. His gaze is just like the ones he gives Sophia. From his experienced moves, Katarina realizes that Nicol must have dried Sophia’s hair the same way on several occasions, even though it would normally be a maid’s job. Katarina feels happy that Nicol is taking care of her.

Katarina reminds Nicol that he also needs to dry himself up, but Nicol replies that he can do that later. He explains that it would be terrible if she caught a cold. Katarina thinks to herself that it would also be terrible if he caught one. Nicol is so gentle, he can’t possibly hate her, just like Sophia said. She doesn’t know why Nicol is avoiding her, but she decides to wait until he opens his heart to her.

Nicol dries himself with the towel and uses his magic to dry their clothes. Since they are indoors, the wind doesn’t feel as cold as earlier. Now, Nicol, Katarina and their clothes are completely dry.

Nicol and Katarina resume their exploration of the mansion. Nicol suddenly stops. When Katarina asks why, Nicol tells her that he has felt some presence at times. However, whenever he looks back, the feeling disappears. Katarina gets scared again and grabs Nicol’s sleeve. Nicol tries to reassure her by saying it must be a mouse or something, but Katarina can tell that Nicol is holding back on saying anything that might make her feel anxious.

Nicol and Katarina resume their exploration and finally reach the room on the second floor where Katarina saw the silhouette. Katarina is highly nervous since it feels like a horror game to her. But when they enter the room, there is no suspicious silhouette nor ghost. Katarina feels relieved but Nicol stiffens when he sees an envelope which has fallen on the ground.

Nicol picks up the envelope and opens it, but there is nothing inside. However, when he turns it over, his eyes open wide.

???: Good grief. Even though we thoroughly searched for you, I didn’t expect you would manage to arrive here ahead of us.

When they turn around, they see Silva. Katarina is shocked to see him. Silva explains to her that this mansion is their hideout. So the presences that Nicol felt must have been pirates. Katarina feels relieved, but Nicol reminds her that their situation is not good at all since they have been captured again.

Silva tells them he has been worried about them since they are “their precious hostages”.

Nicol: “Your hostages”, huh? By that, you mean “Queed’s hostages”?

Silva takes a serious expression and asks Nicol to explain himself. Nicol tells him he has found in this room an empty envelope with a wax seal featuring Queed’s emblem. The same emblem as the one on Frederic’s badge.

Nicol sternly asks Silva why there is an envelope with Queed’s emblem in the hideout of a pirate gang. Silva is taken aback for a while and then laughs with a loud voice. Silva explains that Nicol got it all wrong since this letter is something he stole before the raid, to know stuff like the number of guards on the Vinklem. Nicol doubts Silva’s explanation but doesn’t pursue the matter and leaves the envelope on the desk.

Then Silva reminds Nicol and Katarina that they should hurry up and see their friends since they have been worried sick about them. He informs them that they should have arrived by now. Hearing this, Nicol and Katarina rush downstairs.

****** Silva’s POV ******

After Nicol and Katarina have left, Silva breathes a sigh of relief and takes the envelope away. He told Nicol a big fat lie to deceive him and it was nerve-wracking. He can’t afford anyone to figure out their true identities. They must accomplish their mission secretly and peacefully without anyone figuring anything out.

Alan Stuart and Diamond: Less than Perfection (Character Analysis)

I got inspired to do this mostly due to the anonymous asks to compare Katarina and Phos from the same series. Considering Houseki no Kuni/Land of the Lustrous and Hamefura are some of my favorites, I tend to draw more parallels. This one is between Alan and Diamond, because I think they are quite a bit similar in a sense of having a “perfect” sibling they are compared to.

To start with the similarities right off the bat, both of them are the sibling of a “perfect” person. Geordo being the perfect prince and Bortz being a “true diamond”. From being siblings to these “perfections” both have developed an inferiority complex of sorts. Alan’s was more bluntly stated while Dia’s never was, theirs was more eluded to than anything else. They have vaguely similar appearances, which depending on how one reads into it, can mean a lot more. I tend to over analyze, so appearances will be another thing I’m talking about.

In terms of appearances, both of them have a bit of meaning to who they’re compared with. Alan’s silver hair compared to Geordo’s blonde, or rather gold, color shows on a surface level how they can be compared. Silver is always commonly seen as less valuable or less rare than gold is. This also plays into his personality, which is often less formal than Geordo’s, both in his FL form and his Hamefura!Form. In Dia’s case, their comparison to Bortz is more on hardness, in both senses of the word. Dia remarks that Bortz is the hardest and most durable out of all of them. Bortz’s harsh and cold personality reflects this. In turn, Dia is seen as “weaker” than Bortz due to their build. They are more delicate and can break easier than Bortz, adding onto it and Dia is considerably kinder and gentler than Bortz, they’re “softer” than Bortz, which the other characters often remark.

So the similarities can go a long way, what’s interesting though is how they both handle this comparison. I will also make note of Geordo and Bortz in a later post but for now, let’s focus on Alan and Dia. Another thing to note as one more surface similarity is that they both hold their “perfect” sibling on a pedestal. Alan sees Geordo as the perfect prince and Dia sees Bortz as the best and most perfect out of the Gems.

In Alan’s case, his Fortune Lover half (and him before meeting Isekai-ed!Katarina) had a loathing for Geordo. Not so much as burning hatred, but a deep dislike of Geordo because everything seemingly came easy to him and Alan could never catch up. His dislike for Geordo grew due to hearing others compare him to Geordo and deemed the “inferior twin” who only got the dredges of what Geordo didn’t take. Being a small kid at the time (no older than five if I’m recalling correctly), this had a pretty large effect on him that lasted all the way to the academy. He always saw Geordo as a rival and perhaps even an enemy. He wasn’t exactly trying to hide it either as far as I can tell. Alan isn’t one to hide things on purpose, but he doesn’t just outright shout things either. He’s blunt. However, he’s still holding onto the possibility he can “defeat” Geordo, best him in some way. He’s not given up and will continue to fight Geordo in order to prove himself.

Dia on the other hand, is a lot more subtle and goes more in line with denial. They are aware Bortz is stronger than them. Bortz is stronger, faster, harder than them. They see Bortz as a “true diamond” and they exist in a different class entirely. What’s interesting about Dia is that they’re technically the older of the two (compared to Alan being the younger twin). I don’t recall how much older Dia is than Bortz, but it may play a small role. They are saddened by the fact that they are weaker than Bortz. Always refused to do anything because Bortz doesn’t want them to get hurt. Dia’s loathing for Bortz is actually quite strong. Stronger than Alan’s dislike for Geordo. When we first meet Dia they remark how they wonder how things would be if Bortz never existed. They immediately remark how awful it must be for them to say that, despite believing they love Bortz dearly. This shows how much Dia tried to deny their loathing and that hatred just continued to build until they wished to shatter Bortz into pieces.

So an interesting thing I see is how they both manage these comparisons and their dislikes. Alan manages to keep his dislike level by throwing himself into a competitive mood. He doesn’t exactly hide the fact he has a dislike for Geordo because they’re compared all the time. Not to mention, Mary is there to reassure him of his worth. He’s always able to talk, vent, and likely remember the reasons for his dislike of Geordo, but never enough to really be so hateful as to hurt him.

Dia though, they never really had anyone to talk to. They never spoke about it and that hatred was left unchecked and built for centuries. Alan regularly released his stress in the form of competitions and vents, but Dia never did any of that. They constantly felt put down by Bortz, because Bortz thinks only they could do it (I’ll talk about Bortz in a later post). That denial and locked feelings built up in Dia until it exploded. They wished to shatter Bortz into pieces just to prove they are better than Bortz and that they will not stand for their discouraging behavior. They hated Bortz so much they wanted them to be broken.

It’s an interesting comparison for me and that either of them could’ve been in the other’s shoes depending on how their circumstances and situations could have changed. How would things change if Dia didn’t internally hate Bortz as much as they did? How would things change if Alan ended up hating his brother so much he wanted to break him? On the flip side, how would their perspectives on such a topic be affected if they met one another? Alan learning somehow Dia hated being put down by Bortz so much they wanted to hurt them, and Dia seeing that despite Alan constantly being compared, he never hated his brother as much as they did.

Of course one big thing to note one more time is how Alan had other things to do besides getting compared to Geordo. He has his music, his other hobbies, and eventually all the rumors just became wordless noise to him. Dia didn’t have any outstanding hobbies (outside of their love for cute things), what they could do largely explained their reason for existing and being denied that makes them feel worthless. Beyond that, I am curious to how things would play out if the two ever met or their situations changed to mirror the others somewhat.

Katarina:“Keith, does your body hurt? Are you injured? Do you feel sick?”

Keith:“I thought I could protect big sister properly this time, but the fact that your face is looking at me like that……”

Katarina: “What are you talking about! You protected me well!”

Keith: “I see……… That’s good to know…….”

Keith smiled softly.
The moment I saw his expression, I was so relieved and miserable that tears welled up in my eyes.

Katarina: “Keith, pull yourself together ……! Please don’t die, Keith~!!”

Keith: “Big sister….. don’t worry. I’ll…… always be here with you…….”

I feel like I was in a daze.
Keith puts his hand on my cheek, fumbling to wipe away my tears.
And then—
I felt something soft touch my lips as his face came close to mine.

Katarina:(……Eh?)

My skirt absorbed the water and sank heavily.
I thought I heard someone’s voice in the distance, but my consciousness was not clear, probably because of the impact of falling into the water.

I’m in pain. I can’t breathe.
I can’t move my body properly.

What should I do?
If I don’t do something, I’ll meet my doom.

please help me——

Nicol:“—Katarina!”

At that moment, I suddenly felt something touch my lips, and the air I wanted filled my body.
The moment someone touched me, I slowly stopped sinking.

I was supposed to be underwater, but somehow I felt the wind blowing.
I didn’t know whether I was in the water or in the strong wind, but in the midst of this strange sensation, someone was hugging me.

Notes:

  • These are probably the last previews, I think!
  • They had announced that the game went from the original release date of December 23, 2021, to February 10, 2022. I haven’t check but I’m assuming pre-order period will be extended as well. I’m not too surprised though, they probably wanted to extend the preorder period to last until to Christmas season to increase sales.
  • If this is the last preview, then translations will end here since I’m not too sure if I can get the game or not. I might translate any spoilers I come across though, we’ll see :))
