There is no position that I am more diametrically opposed to (that like objectively does not matter) than “stop making mediocre musicals movies” which I’m seeing a lot of in the wake of the wicked casting. I have some thoughts about this, and then I just start ranting, let’s go:

1. No musical movie is ever going to be the same as the show. They are fundamentally different art forms that communicate their stories in very different ways. Even movies that are objectively not good™ have moments that elevate them that you simple don’t get onstage. Things like close ups and montages are film devices that can change a musical text for better or worse, but either way you’re getting something new. The changes made to one don’t influence the other in nearly every case.
2. Movies are able to reach way more people than anything else. You say you want accessible theatre, you say you want your favorite show to tour or stay on Broadway longer? Well it’s not going to if there isn’t interest. You get a lot more community theatre productions after a film is made, please, go see them. In the the wake of the very bad into the woods movie, my local theatre put on into the woods and it was great, they had an elaborate cow puppet and everything
3. How many people got into Phantom, Sweeney Todd, Les Mis etc after the movies were made? All of which are…. Oscar Nominated. Not winners. They’re all not very good. So many more people are going to see Wicked (202?) Than have ever seen it or in some cases heard of it. We get into a bubble of what is popular hear on tumblrdotcom but than we all saw how shocked people were on twitter after learning what Dear Evan Hansen was About.
4. The wicked casting really shows of the damned if you do damned if you don’t nature of musical casting. People in the tags are asking for unknowns- well that’s what they did for in the heights and nobody saw it. The key is, the are not trying to please youwicked lover, they want someone who has never seen wicked to buy a ticket because they really liked thank you next and they watched victorious when they were little. That being said, Cynthia Erivo only had 21 credits on imdb, 5 of which haven’t even come out yet, 2 of them are podcasts and ONE OF THEM IS AN EPISODE OF THE BOSS BABY SHOW so while I’m not saying she’s unknown, it is safe to say she is not a household name in anyway. Alexia Khadime is the only black woman to ever play Elphaba full time, Erivo’s casting is huge deal and in many ways Ariana taking Glinda allows for this to occur
5. Proshots are good and I want them all very much. But you’re living in a dream world of you think the general populace cares. Hamilton was an anomaly, and even then people were clowning on the staging and the theatre acting and the spit and it does not bring wide appeal! You think the Sweeney Todd pro shot brought anywhere near the number of people to be fans of the show as the 2007 movie?? No! And that proshot is excellent, but it is not what most people want! And there’s no way we would have gotten the Royal Albert Hall Phantom without the 2004 movie.
6. More than one version and vision of a show can exist!!!! Let this be!

Honestly, I can’t help but agree. I’ve not said anything regarding the wicked movie because I’m very conflicted, but I don’t think in essence that it is a bad thing.

We have had some epic failures when it comes to musical movies. I’m not gonna say the name, but they lost a shitton of money on a recent one because it was an abomination only enjoyable to those who were too fucking stoned to make sense of anything anyway and furries.

If you asked me three months ago, I wouldn’t want ariana within a 20 mile radius of the wicked movie. However, now that she’s been cast, I… don’t think it’s the worst thing in the world. I don’t like her, no, but op makes a very valid point regarding her casting

And besides, isn’t one of the core messages of wicked one of acceptance? I don’t care for her or her music, but hell I was one of those kids watching victorious every day, and I think, yeah, she could do well in the role of glinda while also helping actually bring attention to the movie.

That being said, I am extremely excited for Cynthia. While I haven’t seen her in anything myself, I’ve looked up recordings of her voice and goddamn. There are absolutely no words.

Just a closing thought, one last interjection… Wicked: the Musical is not original. It is a musical based off of a book spun off of a movie based off of a musical based off of a book. The movie won’t be the exact same thing as the musical, but who’s to say that means it’ll be bad?

My partner and I talked about a Kingdom Hearts ONE PIECE AU and I just think. About it. Constantly.

Luffy is Sora, Ace is Riku, Sabo is Kairi and Sabo who “goes missing” and “loses his memories” of Luffy (tbf everyone does for Sora BUT THE PARALLELS) and how Ace and Luffy probably looks for Sabo like how Riku and Sora looks for Kairi while Ace gets tricked by the Darkness:tm: that it can help him find his missing brothers and loses himself to the darkness–

While Brook and Usopp are Goofy and Donald respectively (court musician, royal army’s sniper) BECAUSE SHANKS IS KING MICKEY and it makes s e n s e ecause Yasopp would be part of Shanks’ crew and they’re busy with Shanks and they need someone to find the Key so Brook and Usopp go find Luffy

AND ZORO IS LEON! And Nami is Yuffie, while Robin is Aerith and they all u know get dragged into Luffy’s adventure, his quest to find Sabo and Ace and his dream to find ONE PIECE (Kingdom Hearts) after it faded away into darkness like the stories Shanks told Luffy about–AND AND AND Atlantica is Fishman Island and they meet JINBE and Triton is King Neptune and etcetc

Aalso how Shanks, instead of “giving” Luffy a devil fruit, ends up giving Luffy his Keyblade instead–unintentional successor… AND ERAQUS IS WHITEBEARD with Marco Thatch and Izo being Terra Aqua and Ventus……. Rayleigh is Yensid, Yensid being Mickey’s original teacher, Shanks most likely learning from Rayleigh, and then Rayleigh teaching Luffy like how Yensid conducts the trial for Sora and Riku…

Pete is Buggy.

Maleficent is a mix of Tashigi and Smoker, not really a BIG BAD villain and actually ends up helping Luffy/Sora…

Oh, also with Zack being Rosinante, Cloud being Law, and Sepiroth being Doflamingo…
