May 23rd 1994 - Ill Communication

Ill Communication is the fourth studio album by the Beastie Boys containing, a hefty, 20 tracks. The first single, “Sabotage,” was released in January, almost a full four months before the album would be released. Sabotage was released along side a phenomenal music video, directed by Spike Jonze.

I will admit, I didn’t understand the Sabatoge music video when it came out. As a kid I the references were confusing, the wigs and mustaches were supposed to looked cheesy, the film was so grainy… I didn’t get it. Now though, now it’s incredible. It’s easily one of my favorite music videos of all time. Jonze nails the genre parody, and couples it with just enough

The video for “Sabotage” was nominated Five moon men, including Video of the Year, at the 1994 Video Music Awards. Unfortunately it lost all five categories. Looking back now, Aerosmith’s “Cryin” doesn’t really hold up compared to the genre parody that is “Sabotage.”

The album hit number one on the Billboard top 200 and is the Beastie Boys second best selling album of all time.
