Summary:After a devastating winter in Bastogne, Easy Company is finally moving out of the woods. Tonight, they’ve found a convent to sleep in, and two old friends take a moment to enjoy their well-earned rest.
Some of them stumble as they head into the convent. It’s a welcome sanctuary from the cold they’ve all become so used to suffering through in the last few months that have seemed like years. Most of those advancing are coming right off the front. Easy Company has lost 82 men in Bastogne and Foy alone. Among the weary and weather-worn but alive are two soldiers, friends since childhood, who’ve somehow made it this far. Donald Malarkey shivers as he looks up and down the high-roofed halls. It should be warmer in here, but from the silence above where sparrows should be fluttering in the rafters, it’s too cold for even the birds to nest.
